- Q: Does a current carrying conductor experiences a force onlywhen the current is in the same direction as the magnetic field?
- Current carrying conductor will always experience force, weather the magnetic field is from external or self induced magnetic field. The reason I know this is because I have been involved in testing 50,000 watt diesel generator sets by applying a dead short (1000's amps) across the output. And have observed double (00) cables jumping on the laboratory floor (like a garden hose when you slam the valve shut).
- Q: I own a 2300 square foot home with an upstairs and downstairs heatpump. If I wanted to buy a generator to use in the event my power went down what size should I shoot for. I would like to be able at a minimum to provide upstairs heat (1000 square feet), maintain the fridge and provide minimal light at night. Basic survival type stuff. Also how much fuel would normally be consumed running for 24 hours? Thanks I know this is vague so generalities are fine.
- Heat pumps are pretty big users of power. I would get at least a 3500 watt but that would be good for heat, fridge, a couple lights and a tv only. Bigger would be better. It may consume 5-10 gallons of gasoline per day. Running your own generator is not cheap.
- Q: First of all let us get down to the corruption of all of this hoax created by Al Gore which is nothing but a scheme to put the public in fear. This will stop all of the money going out to create bogus programs. Next, let is realize that hybrid automobiles mpg results have been overinflated by the corrupt EPA. Since they have been caught, now they are doing real world tests. Now, let us look at what Europe is doing with automobiles. CLEAN DIESEL. These clean diesels consume far less fuel than gasoline motors of the same size. They are getting quieter, no longer smoke, and are as fast as gasoline cars in some cases. Mrs. Speaker, I challenge you to drive one of these cars and you will be surprised. However, I think the public should decide on whether Global Warming is true or not. I do not want you and a hand full of others control our lives when we vote you in there to work for us.
- I'm not going to comment about hydrogen fuel cells, except to say that I think they'll be out of reach (unless and until they solve the platinum problem) but I've owned both a 2003 honda civic hybrid and a 2006 peugeot diesel (1.6 Litre HDi -- not sold in the USA). The diesel got 60 mpg. The hybrid started out at 55 and dropped to 46, even with careful driving. For hilly areas, hybrids are good on the downhill, annoying on the uphill. Diesels on the other hand, are very zippy. Until recently I thought that diesel was go, and that the only problem was that US wasn't mandating for the use of ultra low-sulphur the way that Europe is (see the wikipedia article below) But then I found the Union of Concerned Scientists report, which contains the following information Diesel vehicles can help a car travel 30 to more than 40 percent farther on a gallon of diesel fuel. However, this advantage is only partly due to the higher efficiency of diesel engines, which offer a 15 to 25 percent improvement over gasoline. The remaining increase is due to the fact that diesel fuel contains 13 percent more energy than a gallon of gasoline. so, unless we mandate that ALL new cars be super efficient (whether hybrid-gasoline, hybrid-diesel, plug-in electric, or veggie oil) , the cost factors are going to be very high. I think that, if the priority for ALL new car manufacturers was efficiency, then the economy of scale rule would mean that the retooling costs would be lower, and we could afford to have more highly processed fuel, or different types of engines. Lots to think about!
- Q: What type of diesel engine diesel
- The temperature at minus 10 degrees - minus 20 degrees with -20 diesel.
- Q: I am looking for the stand by large generator 15-20kw (to use all the power on one transfer switch). The problem is that stand by generator require large propane tanks (expensive to install). I would like to find a stand by generator that i could run off gasoline and use all of it available power. I think this would the most economical solution. In case of propane/natural gas the cost of propane tank installation is significant. The diesel stand by generators are significantly more expensive. So far I have found tri-fuel13kw portable generator that has several outlets. In this case not all the power can be utilized.
- I don't get what you mean by not able to use all the power. The generator will produce it's rated output, and little more, from one or any combination of it's outlets - single or three phase, including the 12 volt charging system. The total output of the machine is available as a function of the total load connected, not the number of plugs or the variety of outlets - it is the total load that counts. Petrol is the least efficient, and the most dangerous fuel to use and store. The amount of fires involving LPG or similar fuels is a fraction of those involving petrol in road accidents for a start. A slow speed Diesel generator correctly sized for your normal load (allow 33% additional capacity for starting induction motors etc.) will use the least fuel, and be the longest lasting by a large margin of any of the choices you suggest above. The cheapest initial option will be a petrol powered system, but the most expensive to run, and the earliest to wear out. The running costs will be much cheaper on propane etc., and the engine will run much cleaner and last longer as a result. A high speed diesel unit will cost more than the petrol version, but will not be as expensive as the better slow speed types, it will be economical, but is not going to last as well as the slow speed models. Well made slow speed diesel units will cost the most to install, but will be the most economical both to run, service and in longevity. The cheapest initial option I have found, is always the most expensive in the medium and long range. If the unit is purely for emergency power, it should be run under load every month at least, and the fuel must be kept fresh, or treated and constantly monitored to withstand long term storage - this is where the propane storage is particularly effective. The worst thing that can be done with any backup power system is to allow it to sit for any length of time without being used. Many fail at critical times because of this.
- Q: I recently seperated the generator from the engine and replaced the rear main oil seal on the engine the electric generator was only moved back about 16-18 inches to access rear main seal. job went well with no problems after completeing job I turned down rpms to about 1000 rpm It was put back in service They use it to power up refer containers from the harbor. the next day I check it and they had turned up rpms to ??? as fast as it would run and 12 refer units running off it oh it's 480 volt well it ran for a week non stop and broke down and of corse it was my fault all i did was unbolt drive plate on front of rotor from flywheel of engine .est to repair is 6,000 could this be my fault after it ran for a week or caused from hi rpms and heat related possibley
- Sorry man, your idea has been taken already they are called uninterruptible power supplies (UPS). They can seamlessly keep your computer and other similar electronics online with a battery backup until power is restored. For longer outages, most folks use an outdoor AC generator to power critical components (fridge, freezer, heating, maybe computer/modem). Also, your DC power outlets idea would not work logistically. Your modem and computer do indeed have power supply cords that convert 120 VAC into some DC voltage. So, in order to use your special DC outlets during an emergency, you would have to unplug the devices from the normal outlets, attach a special DC-DC cord, and then plug the device into the emergency DC outlets. So, this would be quite the headache and would also mean downtime while you switch over; by comparison a UPS would have no downtime. Also you have to figure in the additional complexity of installing emergency DC outlets in a home (more confusion for electricians and homeowners). Finally, a gas-powered generator in the basement isn't the best idea since internal combustion engines give off carbon monoxide. People have died from using products such as gas-powered pressure washers in enclosed areas. In fact, a fairly common way to commit suicide is to leave your car engine idle in an enclosed garage. So I propose sticking with the status quo here. AC outlets for all, and UPS devices for those that need emergency backup power for their computers (in your case to keep your phone service as well). edit: Oops, you did mention that you know that battery backups exist already. Still, the points that I and others have made still stand.
- Q: Do you have more insights into this? Japan builds great cars, machinery, tools and high-tech products. Their bullet train is known for almost zero delays in decades. Yet with the Fukushima nuclear power station we have flawed tsunami protection in a location known for powerful earthquakes and tsunamis for at least centuries. I guess no one should be surprised by a ca. 50 feet tsunami at that location. It looks to me like such an obvious blunder. Am I mistaken? - And I mean no offense to the great people of Japan who so valiantly dealt with the terrible tsunami crisis that I admire this very much. Thank you.
- They know there would be tsunamis around the area, but they never expected the tsunamis of that magnitude. After the incident, the geographers dig the land and found there were tsunamis of that size about 700 years ago. It is difficult for ppl to predict the natural disasters that come in 700-year interval. They prepared for the earthquakes and tsunamis of the grade of every 70~300-year interval, but obviously, it wasn't enough for the preparation. Therefore, the gov. is asked the geographers to check the ground to find any sign of past disasters and to reassess the security measures. Obviously, the scientists have better methods to research the land compared to 30-40 years ago, so if any problem was found, the gov. says they would close up the power plants.
- Q: For a new observatory in the Andes at 17,000 feet, we need to provide power continuously for 4 months. Requirement is 208VAC, 3 phase, 10 kW. The site is accessible by large truck, but connecting to the power grid is out of the question. We are thinking diesel generators and large fuel tanks. Any suggestions out there? Thanks.
- Are there any issues with the high altitude? You may need to modify the generators to work that high. 17,000 feet is really up there! Have you considered fuel cells? Wind power may also be an innovative solution.
- Q: If I am living alone in a studio. Any help appreciated :)
- less then a hundred dollars
- Q: also is it probability that will damage my computer or UPS
- ups will steady current, wont damage pc
