- Q: I Have an ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe motherboard with the chipset fan going at over 6000 RPM, an AMD Athlon 64 4000+ with the CPU fan at about 3000 RPM, and a GeForce 6200LE with a very high pitched fan that's dead annoying. To cut a long story short, my PC makes way more noise than it should be, now I don't have any case fans installed but that shouldn't mean that it has to make this sort of howling, believe me, if you were sitting next to it, you'd understand where I'm comin from, it's like tryin to sleep at night with a diesel generator in your room while it's downloading stuff. The fans shouldn't need to spin that fast as the average temp is about 30-40 degrees Celsius across all the components. Anyone know what I should try? Cheers Sam The Bam

- Nice to have your Q, i am also a Jack up Rig Design Engineer. Ok. see 1st of Jackup rigs have diesel generators which provide power supply for the various electrical power requirements on rig. usually the voltage level is 6.6kV, 4.16kV, 690V or 600 V which is then further reduced upto 415V, 220V/127V as per load and client requirements since it affects the design and overall space required and size of rig as well. the generated power is 1st transferred to the main PMCC or MCC known as generator switchboards. from here the power is dirtributed to various other switchboards such as jacking MCC, drilling MCC, Ventilation MCCs, VFD panels (for top drive mud pump panels through VFD/SCR system) and other MCCs for other electrical loads. voltage is further reduced upto 415V/220V/127V for lighting and other lv loads using dry type transformers. oil filled trafos are not preferred since they r bulky and not feasible to have them on rigs since its in sea and also problem in maintenance. cables used are usually of XLPE or XLPO insulation. the configuration is as follows CU/XLPE or XLPO/Inner sheath (SHF)/Armour/Outer sheath (SHF), the inner and outer sheath has to be low smoke halogen free material, armour is usually bronze wire armour, usually cables used are all flame proof as per iec 60332, cat 3-22A and cables for emergency purposes are fire resistant as per iec 60331. hope this is fine.

- Q: Elec. bill is too high, so I wanna run 2HP swimming pool pump via generator. It's 240V. How big a generator do I need? Is diesel less to purchase than gas? Is diesel cheaper to run? Can I run the pool say 6 hrs a day on generator designed for emergency back-up?

- Q: I have a Diesel generator using leroy sommers alternator and which uses intelilite MRS 11 controller , it is 380 V , 50 Hz , yesterday i started having problems , after running the genset for like 12 seconds it shuts down and i get two error msgs the first one is : Shutdown Level for Phase 1 under volts the second error msg is : Shutdown Level for Gen voltage Unbalance .in the first 12 seconds the voltage on 3 phases got no problem and after 12 seconds the generator auto shuts down and i cannot seem the find the problem , any help will be appreciated
- Depends on the local rules. Power companies don't care, since once he is cut off he will not be back feeding the line. We've had a few people around here do it, including several who were far enough from the powerlines that it would have been prohibitively expense to hook them up. I just want to add that if you live in a cold climate and set yourself up to utilize the waste heat from the generator, the cost of fuel and generator may be cheaper than paying for electricity and heat together, even assuming you have to buy a replacement generator every year. If you add in appropriate alternate energy, while using the bottom line as your decision driver, you may cut your costs over conventional sources. Depends on how you do it.

Rango forgot about hydrodynamic transmissions. Not all diesel trains have electric transmission, though it's used by a majority of diesel trains in the world. And some modern diesel locomotives actually have a very good noise dampening, so they are not much louder than an electric locomotive.

- Q: Can any anyone help me with this. The generator is a brushless, air-cooled diesel generator without AVR. It is kinda old and it's made from Japan. The manufacturer is Yanmar.
- All you need is a transformer to boost the low AC voltage up to 110 or 120 volts (for USA and Canada) or 220-240 for other countries. You need to know what voltage and current the generator does produce, and if it isn't specified on a plate on the generator, you will need a multimeter. You could probably get an inexpensive one at a hardware store. Then you need to hunt for a suitable transformer. It not only has to have the right input and output voltage ratings, but also the current rating that the generator can put out. Keep in mind that V1xA1 V2xA2. So, for example, if the generator puts out 60 volts at 10 amps, you would get 120 volts at 5 amps with a 1:2 coil ratio. Both input and output coils have to be rated for at least the amps in the equation, but the rating can be higher.

- 1. (i). Each engine should carry the SAME LOAD PERCENTAGE-wise, eg. 80%, to minimize the load change burden on the rest. (Smaller engines may run at full load, since their contribution may go unnoticed.) Since the overall kW bus load is constant, each generator will pickup a percentage of it, by controlling the torque on each prime mover. If it is a steam turbine, by throttling steam flow. If it is a diesel engine, by throttling fuel, and so. (ii). Each alternator should be adjusted to carry the SAME POWER FACTOR, by adjusting excitation accordingly, eg, .85, to avoid stability issues. Running alternators at leading power factors may turn the system unstable and force loss of synchronism 2. Considerable mechanical damage will be caused by incorrect synchronization to windings, shaft and keyways. 3. (i) reducing torque on one a prime mover is done when preparing to take it out of service. This has to be done gradually, so that other machines can pickup the load slowly. When close to unloaded, the generator can be taken off the grid. Power should never be reduced to the point of allowing the generator to be motored, i.e., reverse power flow, which can cause unpredictable damage to the turbine and system instability. (ii) reduced excitation is a very dangerous condition which will cause the power factor to turn leading, i.e., capacitive, weakening the synchronizing torque with possible loss of synchronism and forcing the bus voltage up. .
