Q: I am looking to save money on the electric/gas bill this winter and am considering a diesel generator to supply domestic power at 240 volts.Is this practical?: Home made electricity from a generator is more expensive than that from a supplier. They get huge bulk discount on fuel and their equipment is way more efficientt. But, and this is quite a big but. if you also use a heat exchanger on the exhaust and use the engine cooling system to heat your house, you win hands down. Think of it as either sightly more expensive electricity and free heating, or slightly more tricky heating and free electricity.

The 6,500 watt generator can only supply a maximum of 27 amps out of the 240 volt outlet or 15 amps out of each of the 120 volt outlets or any combination that does not exceed the 6,500 watt capacity of the generator. A diesel engine has nothing to do with the capacity of the generator. Diesel engines are used on larger capacity generators or continuous duty generator sets. The generator itself doesn't care what type of engine is spinning the rotor. Will the generator run just one of the units? If it does, then my thoughts are the generator doesn't have the capacity to run the loads you have.

You start the engine and connect the electrical load to the generator buss. If you are connecting to a grid or existing power system then you need to match the frequency of the grid. As to advantages and disadvantages, you need to state what you want to compare it to and how large the generator or system is.

Even if you could design a facility to withstand a 200 or even 500 year disaster, eventually you'll encounter something even larger, and then you'll be right back here whining about why did they only design the structure for a 500 year disaster, blah blah blah. Furthermore, such a facility would be prohibitively expensive and over engineered. Was it a risk to only design something to withstand a once-in-a-century event? Sure, but there's no such thing as 0% risk.

Q: also is it probability that will damage my computer or UPS: Depending on where you live, your main power may occasionally be supplied by a large diesel generator. During power outages I use a 5500 watt generator to supply power to my home. The computer is on backup power and I have never had a problem. There is absolutely no reason for concern if you have a good quality generator that works properly. If your generator supplies a stable output voltage it will work fine. However if your generator operates near it maximum load and the output voltage varies in frequency and voltage there is a possibility of damage to equipment connected. A UPS may assist, but unless the generator is perfect the UPS will switch to battery power. After a short time the battery will run down and the computer shut off.
