Q: A couple years ago the power in our area was out for two whole weeks because of ice and such, we stayed warm thanks to gas heating but now I'm in an all electric mobile home in the same area. All I want to power is the refrigerator, deep freeze, microwave, one laptop and at least one, maybe two little plug in heaters.I need to know what size/type generator to get and if I need a separate kit or anything in order to hook up to my mobile home. Q: How much carbon does the average diesel-powered (not hybrid or diesel-electric) freight train engine emit per ton-mile?: All diesel locomotives actually are now self-generating electrics. The diesel turns a generator that powers YOOOOJ electric motors geared to the drive wheels. IOW the electric part is the transmission between the engine and wheels. As for carbon output Assume 0.4 # of fuel per horsepower per hour. Assume the engine is run at about 50% most of the time the freight train is cruising. So for a 7000 hp locomotive, that'd be an average power output of 3500. So far the algebra gives us 1400 # mass of fuel used every hour. Most freight trains I've seen run like 4 locos, maybe more if it's a really long consist and there're more inclines to pull up. So that'd be like 5600 # of fuel for every hour that train is moving. But wait! Remember how much stuff that train's hauling! It's literally HUNDREDS of semi trucks worth of stuff, so to complicate this, you have to also know the length of run (in hours) and the load so you can get the carbon output per ton of cargo. After all that you must figure the percent by weight of Carbon in diesel fuel. Sorry, but I'm not doing that homework. Good question, BTW. Also, I did this calculation in my head for a commuter train last year and figure that the equivalent fuel mileage is like 50 mpg per person. Sure beats commuting in the family Status Urban Vehicle, huh!

Q: I know with cars there is a blue book but how does it work for a generator? We have an 80kw Kholer Diesel generator with 1,050 hrs on it and it's 13 years old. It gets regular maintenance and is in great shape. I've been looking online but can't seem to figure out how much it's worth.: $8,000-$15,000 depending on the exact model and much more information. Generators have as many options as cars, and that is why the prices vary.

Q: I am interested in what are the inherient differences and what are the different sets used for?: both. ac or dc depends on your needs. do you need a 28 volt 500 amp generator (thats DC) for running Dc motors. Ususally for small purposes its an AC generator putting out say 6000 watts at 120 VAC or 240 VAC at 60 Hz or 50 Hz depending which country you live in or generator came from. Also along with the AC it puts out, it also has an output of 12 volt DC for charging batteries, even its own, for starting itself,like a car. Yes they have improved, in Europe, but the American public has a long memory. That plus diesel fuel is not available everywhere. you cannot pull into EVERY gas station to get it. It is too bad too. I do understand that the new generation of diesels is just as you say it is. clean, efficient, quieter, and peppy. Someday they will come to the US. US automakers will take the technology that they have in Europe and sell it here. US automakers have not shelved the idea. they just do not think that most American carbuyers like the idea. Would you like to take a $1-2 BILLION gamble on the idea? Remember Chrysler. it is being sold for $8 billion. I saw an estimate recently that said GM was only worth $18 billion. Therefore, a mistake could cost 10% or more of the value of an auto company and put it closer to bankruptcy.

Q: about diesel generator: Just as you said, in air cooled, air is passed over the engine usually by a fan. In a water cooled engine water is piped through the engine. In boats there can be raw water cooled or an enclosed system that recycles the water, cooled by a fan. In the raw water the water is drawn in goes through the engine and is mixed with the exhaust and pumped out the stern. Diesel generators generally have a radiator system. There are dual systems that have both.

Q: I want to build a diesel engine driven generator. The type of gen I have is asynchron, 400/690 V, 7,5 kW, 9,4 kVA and I was told that I need to stimulate it with capacitors (the unit is supposed to work without connection to a public netstand-aloneisland-service). Who can give me instructions how to do the el. part, size/type of capacitors etc?: Because it lacks a separate field circuit, an induction generator cannot produce reactive power. In fact, it consumes reactive power, and an external source of reactive power must be connected to it at all times [1]. So you are right that you will need a three-phase capacitor bank at the output terminals (delta-connected). How to size the capacitors? That depends on a few things. Namely what kind of loads are going to be attached to it. I presume this is going to be an emergency generator operating alone (most induction generators are used this way nowadays). In that case, your capacitor bank will need to account for the generator consuming reactive power and the loads consuming reactive power. So, if you know what you are going to connect to the generator, figure up an estimate of the total reactive power of your loads. Then estimate how much reactive power your generator consumes (not sure how to do this; maybe estimate from your 7.5kW and 9.4kVA ratings?). Finally, to size your capacitors equate the total power consumed by gen and loads to this formula: estimated_3phase_power_consumed 3*(line-to-line_volt)^2/X where X 1/(2*pi*freq*C) Solve for C and there you go. My source indicates that the output voltage for an induction generator can vary quite a bit with varying inductive load, so bear that in mind and maybe oversize the caps a bit. Also, the types of capacitors should be able to withstand AC obviously and be rated within your expected operating temp, etc, etc. Good luck.

Q: I want to build an electric generator from an electric motor, how do I do this?I need planes on how to build a generator from an electric motor. I am wanted to use a 16 HP Power Diesel tractor motor. Can any one help? I am useing Diesel power because diesel fuel last longer than gas when in storage. Is this correct?I want a AC Generator.: Very simple. You need an electric motor of the same wattage as you need to generate. You will need to spin the motor a little faster than the rated RPM of the motor. (pick your pulleys carefully) Hook a small load up to the motor, spin it, hit it with a jolt of voltage. (try your 12 volt battery)It should start to generate and you can hook up a bigger load to it. Too simple? Try it.
