- The old Oxy clean is what gave it a bad name. The stuff that is out now is fine for must carpets especially most berbers. 80% of Berber carpet on the market is made with Olefin fibers. These fibers cannot be destroyed with cleaning agents. Even bleach will not do anything to olefin. Beware though some berbers are an olefin nylon blend and I have seen a wool berber but those are rare. Assuming your berber fits into the 80% category you will need strong chemicals and degreasers to clean it. Olefin is a petroleum product and loves oil because it is a similar molecular structure. So you need something that can break that oily bond.

- Im lucky our dry cleaner has very large front load washing machines that take them quite well. Although you can never get them perfect I wash them in the hottest water available. I do not care about color washing out. I want them clean. I also use either a blanket cleaner or I just buy the soap for infants that way it does not irritate their skin next winter. But before I take them I usually leave them over a fence during the spring rain to help wash as much of both sides. I usually rotate between big storms to clean both sides. I also don't want my care to smell to bad. I love horses but my job requires taking people around in my car. Just my 2 cents.

The more if uric acid has affected the subfloor (even concrete), you cannot just lay another flooring on top as the smell would still permeate throughout the house. If you are to do a floating hardwood floor, apply a water-proof adhesive (like Bruce Everseal) at the tongue and groove so that even dog pee wouldn't seep through the cracks. Damages will occur if it happens as the liquid will not evaporate, thus the boards can warp. I am unsure how big your pet is but choose floors that are with aluminum oxide finish, they help prevent scratches. There are certain wood floors that are with a high janka rating (or hardness rating) which would be harder to dent as well... mostly are exotics that can be almost 3x as hard as White Oak. It is advisable that you also trim your pet's nails regularly:) Always remember that if you'd plan to re-sell your house in the future, hardwood floors will always increase its value.
