- Q: If every time I put a new fuse in my surround sub and switch on the power to the sub it instantly blows the fuse with a deafening 120Hz ripple even before I press the power button on the controller, which I should have to do before any sound comes out at all, what is the easiest way to diagnose which component has fried and made a short? Is there any way to test capacitors without power running to them?
- If by surround sub you mean a dedicated amplifier and a subwoofer hooked to it: 1] Test the impedence of the subwoofer; if it is shorter that may be the sole problem [or it may have fired the amp]. Compare that with the specification value 2] You can measure caps with an ohmmeter [very crubdely, though, but likely well enough; see

- Q: considering this car for a project btw i'd do ALL the work i mean parts
- Basics are: Remove fuses and relays one at a time to find circuit that is draining the battery. Refer to your vehicle owner's manual or a wiring diagram to identify the fuses and relays. Then pull the fuses and relays one at a time until the current reading drops. Avoid pulling the fuses for the PCM or other KAM-sensitive modules until you have checked all of the other circuits. Once you've found the circuit that is causing the excessive current drain, check the relay, switch, module or other components in the circuit and replace as needed. Sometimes a bad alternator diode can cause a battery to run down. A good diode should only pass current in one direction. If it leaks current in the opposite direction, it may keep the charging circuit on when the engine is not running, causing the battery to run down Causes of excessive current drain in late model vehicles include things like lights that remain on (trunk and hood lights, interior lights, brake lights, etc.) and also relays that may be stuck on, or modules that are not going to sleep or powering down. A fuel pump relay that sticks on may keep the fuel pump running after the engine is shut off. A switch or relay that powers a rear window defogger can stick on, pulling current from the battery after the ignition is off. An electronic suspension module, ABS module or keyless entry module may remain active long after it should have powered down.
- Q: Basicly I took my car to a mechanic to get a new clutch. I know that they took the battery out in order to do the job. Soon after I got my car back the subs stopped working. I took alook at all the audio components and wiring earlier today and notice that the fuse sized 40 was blown. I am talking about the fuse right next to the battery leading to the amp. I replaced it but it blew out shortly after again. The mechanic said its not his problem and now I am on here on yahoo looking for a solution. Can some one tell me were I should start looking. Thank you very much!
- Does your system use a capacitor? Does the fuse blow immediately, or how long does it last? Does it blow with the radio or car off? When you place the fuse in the holder, does it spark a little? Also you did replace it with a 40 amp fuse right? Edit: Look at the fuse(fuses) in your amp, make sure the total value of the 2 are equal to the fuse at the battery. Example, if your amp has two 25 amp fuses then the fuse at the battery should be 50 amps. If you have a fuse lower than the value of the amp fuse, it could cause the fuse to blow for no reason.
- Q: i tried hooking up the positive to the fuse buss but it shorted out a couple fuses i may have gotten the wires confused
- The positive wire goes to an accessory wire (or a blank accessory terminal in your fuse block if so equiped). The other wire goes to ground. It has to be ground to the metal of the car. All of the electrical components in your car are grounded to the car. The electricity comes from the battery through the wires to the components, goes through the components then returns to the battery using the metal of the car (aka the chassis). Also, add a fuse to the wire if there isn't one already. A live wire in the car without a fuse is very dangerous.
- Q: I have a 1989 5.0 l camaro that wont start. Ive replaced the starter battery and nothing. Ive also tried jumpstarting the car and still nothing. When i turn ob the ignition switch nothing happens. no sound or click. When i turn the switch on all other components start but the car just wont turn over. Its missing the crank fuse might it have to do something with it? Really need some help pls.
- Yes always check all your fuses before looking into replacing expensive parts. Fuses are cheep and one fuse can keep any car from running.
- Q: I was told to replace the distributor and check the fuses. Also to check the wiring from the distributor to the alrenator. Where is all this stuff at and how do I check it The car just stopped and sounds like it is going to start but won't. Thanks
- Best to take it to Mechanic or garage dealing with Toyotas and Japanese autombiles but we use to have a 1993 Toyota Camry LE (kept it like 12 years and had 211,000 miles when my wife and her sisters upgraded to SUVs as she now drives 2005 Toyota Highlander 6 cylinder AWD) and FYI replacing the distrbutor itself is very expensive part for just the electrical component itself plus labor and yes it does eventually go If you are planning to keep this 1993 Camry for some time in excess of 1 year, then my advice would be to pay extra for genuine Toyota distributor part rather than just OEM substitute bec I made this mistake before and the OEM part itself was $200 and died in month 13 after the parts warranty expired. I had previously replaced the distributor cap, 4 spark plugs and spark plug wires myself before with genuine Toyota parts but basically my mechanic confirmed my worse nightmare when the distributor failed again and had to be towed saying that there was no spark coming when he pulled the wire Again this can be costly repair so best to take to reputable garage as they will stand behind repairfor 90 days on labor and part 12 months. Hope the Above Info Helps!
- Q: I have a Rover 420 GSI with an electrical problem. Battery drains over about 40 hours. Replaced it with a new battery. The alternator has also been tested. There is a 4A current being drawn all the time from the battery, when the car is turned off (overnight). I have tried removing all the fueses I can find but nothing makes it drop. I am no great electrical expert. owever, Ive tried removing the Alternator and fan out of line. As it wears down the battery the battery light starts indicating on the dashboard. I am guessing there is a relay or something held open. Is there some easy way of testing them? Thanks.
- A 4 amp draw is enough to produce heat in a component. It can be located by scanning the engine compartment and interior with a remote temperature sensing thermometer. They are available from Harbor Freight for around $40 and can be very useful around the house for other things.
- Q: checked all wires under hood and car, couldn't find any shorts. car will start and run but after awhile it will shut off or when it's put into gear.
- if it shuts off when you put it in gear you need to check the mounts real good in it,it may have a broken engine mount, and that may be allowing it to break ground ,this will cause it to stall out,and blow a fuse, because when you loose the ground wire, you loose power to some of the inside components, such as the computer, and this will make them blow fuses sometimes, its worth a try, good luck with it.
- Q: around ignition fuse. 98 dodge ram.
- did you change the solenoid ? it could be that or the ignition switch.
