- Q: Advantages and disadvantages of composite flooring
- Composite wood flooring, also known as laminate flooring. When it comes to wood flooring, I believe most consumers first thought is the solid wood flooring. But from 2003 onwards, China's composite wood flooring in the building materials market on the rise, which allows consumers to have more choice in the home improvement.
- Q: I have what people call a great room. Meaning you can sit in my living room and see the kitchen and laundry room...it is basically all one room, a doorway divides the kitchen from the laundry area, and everything else is open. So can I move my fridge and stove, lay the flooring, and then put it right back, all the while working out towards the living room? Then move living room furniture into already laid dining room, pull up carpet, lay flooring, and then put the furniture back? Or do I need to clean out this WHOLE area and put down the whole floor and then move everything back in?
- Yes it can be done that way but you also have to consider the base and are you going to do a shoe molding? And should you glue the engineered floor down you ll have to wait the minimum of 24 hrs . Stapling it down, it isn t a problem.. Doing a laminate, it isn t a problem either you just have to deal with replacing the base or putting a shoe molding , which ever way you decide. Much easier if you can empty the room(s) completely and work on them and then put back together. But if the rooms are separate enough as where you can put the base or shoe back or at least partially, you can do it. One poster suggested putting cardboard down to roll your refridge back.. NO use a luan ply or rent a special mover that picks up the whole unit and sets it in place. Wheels can and do telescope through card board and can mar wood. ( voice of experience ). Any flooring questions you can e mail me through my avatar.. GL
- Q: I recently had buckling in my old parquet floor. The parquet was glued down to a concrete slab. We are on the 6th floor of an apt building in the Northeast. I also would like to reduce some some noise for my neighbors downstairs. The parquet has been removed and there is a bunch of remaining old black glue leftover. My contractor gave me 2 options. He said I could glue plywood down to the concrete slab and glue or nail the engineered wood to that. Or I could put plywood down, an underlayment, then float the engineered wood. Is one option better than the other in general? Is one better for noise reduction? Thanks in advance for any responses.
- You can purchase a levelling compound at most of the stores like Home Depot, or Lowe's. It's a little expensive, but compared to the work involved with removing the lino adhesive the cost usually seems worth it. Levelling compound comes in a can, and is spread over any rough floor surface with a smooth edged trowel, and after it dries your floor should have a smooth surface. As for your engineered wood flooring, I have never heard of any that is applied by gluing. Most of the ones I have used in the past interlock, and the entire floor system floats over the sub-floor so that it can allow for any expansion or contraction of the different floor surfaces. Furthermore, not all engineered wood floors are designed to install over concrete. But that is not to say that you don't know what you are doing. For every new engineered wood floor system out there, there's a new and different set of rules that go along with it's application. I just thought I would mention it since a freind of the family recently installed some manufactured wood flooring on his basement floor, and when it got damp the material it was made of expended and broke into pieces. The whole thing eventually had to be replaced, and the manufacturer didn't honour the warranty because the floor was not recommended for concrete. Anyway, my answer to your initial question is Levelling Compound.
- Q: We are in the process of buying hardwood flooring and wow it's not easy! We found a beautiful Brazilian Cherry 1/16 x 4 3/4 but were finding through our research it gets as many good reviews as it does horrible ones. Anyone have any personal experience with this brand flooring and it's quality? How is it as far as scratching and dents? We have a 2 year old who loves to throw things so it needs to be durable. Also do we have to worry about alot of warping with the brand? Again does anyone have any personal experience? Do you have any brands you definitely would recommend? Again it has to be floating to be put on cement flooring. Thanks!
- If the reviews are good and horrible then stay away. It means the problems that people have are major when there are ones.
- Q: cost differnace between ceramic tile vr engineered wood flooring for family room, kitchen and hallway. in gerenal.
- Average ceramic tile is cheaper compared to an average engineered floor...but..tile is cold and hard so be aware of the qualities of each as they are very different.
- Q: how to install wood floors?
- Your question cannot be answered in detail as you ask it. First of all, what kind of wood floors are you taking about, 3/4 hardwood, 3/8 hardwood, laminate, engineered flooring. . .what? Second, what are you installing the floor over, wood or concrete? That will determine what kind of flooring you can use. Finally, there are certain ground rules that are common to most wood flooring. First, make sure the subfloor is level. If you have peaks and valleys in your subfloor, it will stress the flooring and cause premature failure. Know what kind of moisture barrier you need. This will depend on whether the flooring is in a dry (living room, etc.) environment or a wet one like a kitchen or bathroom. Pay attention to the maximum height of your flooring and use the underlayment thickness that will get you to the right height. Keep flooring about 1/4 away from walls to allow for flooring expansion and contraction with moisture and temperature. Finally, for wood floors, allow the flooring to come to temperature in the room it will be installed for at least 72 hours. I strongly suggest you do your homework and research what kind of flooring you want, and what will be best for your application. Unless you have the fundamentals down, you are wasting our time with a non-specific question such as yours.
- Q: I have 2 small dogs and one big dog, which one would be the best? do they scratch easy? I defiantly don't want laminate, it looks too cheap.
- They would both scratch the same, the engineered floors have a thin layer of wood, over a cheaper wood, and cannot be sanded and refinished. I would opt for the hardwood, it can be refinshed numerous times. We have red oak in our house, he main part of the house has been refinished once, in 32 years. I use area rugs, where it gets the most wear. Washable ones.
- Q: What is the difference between solid wood flooring and solid wood flooring? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each
- Basic properties of solid wood flooring:Wood floor is the floor decoration materials of natural wood dried, processed form. It exhibits a natural wood texture and color pattern, to give natural, soft, rich affinity texture, also because it is warm in winter and cool in summer, feel good. It is an ideal material of the bedroom, living room, study room decoration. Solid wood decorative style natural texture, recover the original simplicity, decrease in forest cover, vigorously promoting environmental protection today, the solid wood floor is more precious.
- Q: How much is a solid wood floor how much wages a square meter
- Solid wood composite floor: solid wood composite floor changed the previous physical structure, better stability. In the price, cheaper than the solid wood flooring, belonging to the consumer products. It is a kind of ground decoration material which is popular in home decoration. General in 20 yuan / square meters -500 yuan / square meters between the floor are also good.
- Q: I am laying 5 1/2 inch Thomasville Mahagony Engineered wood flooring. Occasionally I do not get them as snug as I would like, but most of the time it is a nice fit. Is this ok, or should I panic?
- I don't know about panicking. But if you don't get the gaps out as you lay the floor, they will always be there. If you can live with the gaps, then don't worry.
