- Bearing siezes/ Housing leaks/ Seals wear out. All do to use, expanding/contracting due to heat and cool down, and time also. Just a side note for Bryan K a car being FWD or RWD has no bearing on how much room you have for the waterpump or vice versa. This is a generalized statement that holds no truth. I'll give you one example that makes that statement false : when replacing a timing belt/water pump 96-01 Audi A4 1.8t 4cyl the entire front bumper and support must be removed in order to gain access to the timing belt and water pump. However this method is true for both FWD/AWD models. 99.5 to 2004 volkswagens have the same 1.8t engine but they are not longitudinally orientated the water pump and timing belt can be accessed fairly easy a lot less labor than the audi and the jetta is also available in FWD and AWD. Before someone contradicts the AWD jetta look up 4motion volkswagens. There are not alot in the states but they exist. - At okorder to prevent mechanics from trying to rip you on the parts.... and they might not be trying to... but their prices are higher than bav's. PS... the 90K mile service is A LOT... I have never paid anyone to do it. Look in the back of your owners manual, it tells you everything they check. I check it all myself. If you change your own oil scope things out while your under the car. It's easy to spot stuff that is wearing out. You can reset the service light yourself too. :P If you don't know anything about cars however.... don't try doing it yourself.... in other words... if you are scared of doing it, don't... if you feel confident... go for it. Also... the first time you do things it might take an hour... second time will take 30 mins... 3rd time you do something it will take 10-15 mins. Most of the projects I have done have been like that. From rebuilding the internal door mechanisms to working on the engine... that's how it's been for me. Key is to not let yourself get frustrated.

One major problem with all of the front engine front wheel drive cars is the cost of replacing a water pump can be 2 to 4 times as much in labor as the front engine rear wheel drive vehicles of the 70a and 80s for example my suburban was a total of 200 dollars not so with the cavalier The water pump itself was not too bad but the labor getting to it sucks. 104 to 199 dollars for a waterpump and 627 to 800 dollars for the labor could bring you a bill for 732 to 999 dollars lets hope its the cheaper of the estimates

- your car WILL over heat and you will need a new engine if you dont change the water pump. most people dont have the luxury of knowing their water pump is about to go. so what you do it go down to advanced or auto zone get your self a DIY book for your car 15.00 and a water pump 50 and some accessory belts because if yoy go through all this trouble to take them off you might as well change them. also check the timing belt because you will have access to it when u remove the water pump if it looks likes its going to go bad in the next 10K or so miles change it. when you remove the pump and belt change gaskets this is most imperative!

- The pump will not have to work until the water drains by gravity to the level of the spout. Then, Work = Weight of water * Height of lift Find the distance, d, of the center of mass for the remaining water in the bottom 2 m of the sphere. The height of lift will then be 2m - d. The hardest part is finding the distance d to the center of mass. I don't remember how to do that.
