- Q: I'm concerned about the silica dust. Should I hire someone?
- You have a minor concern. Wear a respirator if possible. At least a dust mask. If the board was properly put down you also have to scrape up thin set under the board.Thin set also contains silica Plastic off all doors, cabinets vents ( hot and cold) and cover furniture. You ll do a better job at doing this than any one you hire. Or you cover it and hire some one. It s hard, very dusty job. Usually a one time deal isn t a concern ( as long as you take precautions) unless you have breathing problems. I ve dealt with doing this sort of work for 20+ years and no problem. - Q: I have an existing hardwood floor that I want to tile over (it's not in good condition). Can I put cement board then tile directly onto the hardwoods or do I need plywood on the hardwoods then cement board then tile? I don't want the floors to be 2 thick in addition to the hardwoods.
- Can you explain better? What do you mean when you say the hardwood is not in good condition? Uneven?Decaying?Quick answer if the hardwood is either, youre better off taking it out and starting with a good base.

- If the walls can be opened on both sides of the wall, it is recommended to use I-beam or angle steel as a new pouring concrete slab support beam, in the I-beam or angle above a layer of fiber cement board as a permanent template, and then pouring concrete.
- Q: I am seeking to set porcelain tile on top of the hardibacker board once it is secured. If I have to remove the Barmaill plywood, does anyone have any suggestions on how to do this with ease? I assume its glued as well as screwed down.
- Make sure the plywood is waterproofed by applying a couple of coats of matte polyurethane to it....let it dry completely. Thin set contains water, and you do not want the plywood delaminating. Once the surface is preped, and the plywood is very solid...no flex allowed!, apply thin set and set backer board into it. I usually use drywall screws and screw it down all over the place to make sure the board is in perfect contact with the thinset and backer board. USE Latex fortified thin set or Epoxy thin set...will adhere very well to the sealed ply. NOw, you are ready to set tile...Have a ball. Good luck.
- Q: Is there anything you can add to cement which will increase insulating power?I guess asbestos is illegal and I am not even sure how much it would work, but I was wondering if there isnt something out there that will add R value to cement if you add it to the mix without substantially reducing the strength of the cement itself.
- thickness...the thicker the concrete, the better it will insulate

- Mesh fiberglass tape with thinset mortar. Put the tape over the joint and trowel on the thinset. Make sure you don't work the thinset too much or it will cause the tape to move around and bunch up. The tape doesn't stick to the backer board very well in my experience.
- Q: when installing cement boards on my bathroom walls is it ok to screw them on directly?

- Q: I have a cement back porch/patio approx 5'x22' that I've decided to tile.I know...tile outside...touchy subject, except I got 20 inch tiles at a steal. Problem is, while doing a mock layout, I noticed that many areas on the surface are unlevel (the tile rocks). It difficult to identify every single unlevel spot so I can't patch. Any recommendations on leveling the whole thing? Someone mentioned use wonder board (thin cement board) as an overlay, but I believe you'll still have weak spots beneath.Anyone have a suggestion?
- how uneven is the slab. You can put a pretty thick layer of thinset adhesive and cover up some of the unevenness. If you put down a 1/2 inch of thinset around the bad spots will it stop the tile from rocking? the whole slab doesn't need to be even, but each tile needs to be even with the ones surrounding it
