Q: i have an old cement wall house, i have tar paper on the outer walls and plan on putting 1 or 1 1/2 thick ridge insulation on the walls. These are above grade walls not basement.My question is do i have to vapor barrier the walls or just tape the seams of the foam insulation.thanks in advance: If you already have tar paper (roofing felt, I presume), thats a vapor barrier. You don't need another. You can caulk the joints between the boards if you'd like.

Q: I have a small 4X2 area in which I need to re-tile. The area now is outdoors and is set inside of a concrete slab. Who ever installed the tiles before installed them like paver's where they backfilled the small area with sand (about 3). My question is can I use durock or another cement board to get a solid surface for tiling or do I need to refill the area with concrete? I don't know too much about concrete work which is why I am looking to use the cement boards.Thanks: it won't last long

Q: i am building an outdoor BBQ island and i live in an area that snow will fall for a couple of months. i have been researching cement backer board and i cant find any recommendations on snow fall and what type of tyle is best for this application. dont want to make this investment untill i know what i am getting into. any suggestions: I built a tile inlay on my deck for my grills. It's held up through 3 Wisconsin winters so far. I used pressure treated plywood for a base, then installed Durock over the plywood. Use Flexbond thinset for adhering the tiles. My neighbor owns a flooring store, and he set me up with an epoxy grout. You have to work it quickly to avoid a mess, but it's very durable. Hope this helps. EDIT: I would recommend using the plywood to give the Durock additional support. If you can enlarge the opening enough to wrap the Durock around the edge, you should be good. The tile and Durock should provide enough protection to keep the plywood from burning. If that will be an issue, you can screw some pressure treated 2x4's along the length of the metal frame, spaced every 16 or so, and then screw the Durock to that. This will give the top support so it won't deflect under the weight of the tile and snow, and keep the tile from popping. Good luck.

Q: Hi i want to know if Durock cement board has zinc or lead. Because I made a aviary in my backyard where i know have my lovebirds and some have started giving me sign of lead/ zinc poisoning i would like to know if Durock has it and if it affects my birds thank you.: If your birds are Parrot like Budgies etc , they are for ever nibbling at wood or anything else., Do you know the signs of Lead poisoning,Paralysis being the main one. Durock does contain minute particles but have you considered that it could be Mice droppings or mice urine contamination on their food as the symptoms are similar. Your birds must be actively eating the cement board, which you will be ble to see by the damage to the board. Otherwise you must contact a vet asap. Avian Care Consultant

Q: The reason I ask is b/c my boyfriend was supposed to tile the kitchen..he put down the cement board for it and assured me we bought enough clearance tile. I was unsure and measured, we don't. He has procrastinated and I don't know how to tile anyways, so I want to lay a different floor. BUT I don't want to just throw away this cement board(might learn to tile one day). Is there a type of flooring that could easily just be installed over top of the cement board?: No flooring that I can think of that it be worth the extra expense to treat the cement board to apply flooring to. Most other flooring you can lay over standard sub floor. If you lay cement board down correctly, The seams need to be treat and the roughness of the cement board would need to be treat to lay any type of vinyl down. I suppose you could put a glue down wood over it since you are doing a kitchen but in most cases you can go directly over your sub floor. Over kill but it would work. Q: Unfortinatly i already have the tile but i was hoping i could use self leveling cement then atattch the tile to it. is this even a posabilityor should i use hardyback board and if i do how can i atattch it to the cement: you can probrably use a self leveling floor prep if the floor is not too bad but that stuff is quite expensive if you need a lot of it. make sure you read the instructions and follow them.
