Q: What exactly are fibre cement nails and what are they used for and a description.
Not sure your spelling is correct, but cement board such as DUROCK uses special screws for installation. No fiber cement board uses nails they all get installed with SCREWS
Q: I'm removing a tile floor and planning to install a hardwood floor instead. I found cement backer board under the tile. Do I need to remove the cement backer board? Or can I install the hardwood on top of that?
if it was my house i would remove cement board and replace with wood to accept nails, if it is a floating floor you can keep it, just put tar paper doon before floating floor
Q: why does concrete block crumble but driveways and sidewalk do not?I don't have a driveway so basically i want to build a flat portable surface, made out of cement that my jack-stand (for my car) can stand on so the jack-stand wont have to be put directly in the grass.I would need it for the time that i need to take the tires off. any suggestion?
your putting too much stress on the block if its crumbling
Q: What is the use of fiber cement board
Fiber cement version can replace paper gypsum board, and in terms of strength, fire and moisture are much better. Fiberglass trim panels replace stone and decorative tiles for wall finishes. Because of its specifications generally 1220 * 2440, can be the whole board on the wall, so do the wall decoration with stone and tiles can not do the big face of the solid color effect. Fiber cement panels are widely used in Europe, especially in Japan.
Q: How to do the basement of the cement board
Base repair: in the concrete roof and slab clean, the honeycomb and other large defects in the site of the plaster putty filled with steel scraper compaction, horizontal wiping scraping again (the surface can not scratch the top surface). (Concentration 5 = 100: 5 ~ 6: 60. Brush Alkaline aqueous solution: with 5μ degrees of caustic soda solution brush twice, if the use of 10μ "With the brush immediately rinse with water, dry and then under the next process.
Q: some say lay 15 pound paper what gives?
It's actually a vapor/moisture barrier. And yes it should be put down when laying this kind of surface over wood.
Q: Do you need to finish a cement board for a shower like you would if it were drywall?
Yes..2 reasons..so moisture cant get behind the wall...and it's prevent fire from spreading faster if that wall were to burn. Use dura bond and seam tape just like you would with drywall.
Q: im using a cement backer board why do i need a scratch coat and mesh?
I don't believe you do need the scratch coat or the mesh if you're applying to cement backer board. If my memory serves me correctly that's the idea of cement backing board... to eliminate the extra work.
Q: the durock cement board is 1/2 inch and the drywall is 5/8 of an inch...So the shower wall is about an 1/8 of an inch recessed intothe wall. What can I do to fix the situation without redoing anymore walls. If I butt up the bullnose tile against the drywall about half of the tile's thickness sticks out...actually looks ok. I don't know if i should try to make a gradient from the drywall to the tile. There are also some gap between the two types of boards.....fill it with mortar?
Yes you float it and float it back a bit on the durock. Use the same thinset mortar that you use for the tile. Never use a mastic as some hackers may suggest.Mastic is a water soluble product and will fail in a wet area such as a shower. What I do if the area permits is to put a pc of painters tape on the edge of the dry wall. Leave room for cement board tape. Then float the ares and pull off the painters tape and run the SBN over the durock tape edge and onto the dry wall just a bit to cover all and make a clean transition. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL
Q: am Laying Floor Tile and was Wondering if the Mesh Tape for Cement Board is the Same as you use for Drywall?
Thinner and wider in most cases. You can use same if needs be. Correct term is 'Scrim Tape' and is cheap and can be bought for under ?10 a roll. BUILDCENTER, JEWSONS, TravisPerkins is a good place for it. Even B&Q do it but if you go in and ask for it they will look at you like you have just asked for moon rock!
