Q: I am contemplating on getting a full house generator and need some feedback from you all.l. What is the best brand for quality and durability of a generator and what hp would I needThe house is about 2,000/sq ft, central A/C heat, all electric at the moment with the usual appliances.2. I want to connect permanently to breaker box for automatic turn on and will need fuel for it.3. In light of today's economy and potential collapse if one is in survival mode, is it better or cheaper to have butane or propane ?Also what size tank would need to buy, and how big is reasonable ? to last a good while or as needed.I am totally electric right now including water well pump so when power down, I'm sunk!!: Most of the permanent generators we install down here in Tx are natural gas powered that are connected to the utility. As far as name brand try the Kohler and Generac websites. These sites will also give you the gas consumption rates for the different units. They have alot of good info on sizing. Being as you have all electric it will need to be a decent sized unit to back up the whole home. You could always choose to backup only certain circuits and appliances to bring the demand load down and in turn bring down the size of the gen as well. I've installed 17KW to 100KW(Big Custom Home) units on homes. An automatic transfer switch comes with most stand alone generators. These will sense the utility power drop below a certain voltage and tell the generator to start and will automatically switch to generator power. When the utility power comes back on it will automatically switch back over and stop the generator. Most generators will also test themselves weekly. You can set the time and day for this test.One thing I would recommend is the importance of maintenance. Most generators need to be serviced 2 times a year. I've seen homeowners who did not have a good service plan in place be stuck in the dark when the generator did not work or did not work for long.

Q: believe the mh didnt come with a seperate 12v power supply to run items after the mh engine is stopped! I want to run these items seperately from the mh engine 12v system if possible. The mh has its own stock inverter but i am unable to locate a pwer supply other than the 12v battery in the engine compartment which is used for the primary engine power supply. Does this sound right. For instance are their electrical systems that rely solely on the main or engine battery power supply(without a secondary seperate accesories battery or power supply) and are totally reliant on charging only from the engine charging system. I do have a 2500 watt external generator but i am limited on the hours of usage. Mainly i am interested in running the light ,tv and vcr without assistance of my external generator. How the hell do i set this all up??: what you basically need is a motor home generator for that one,i own an older one that did not come with a generator,and we addd one to it,plus we also added a 24 volt power system to power it with and an inverter,you can run the the lights for about 6-8 hours on the inverter system but when using the generator to keep the 24 volt batttreies charged you can literally run it all night long ,we put this one though a test to see how long it would run for and it never died out,first you have to increase the battery box size to hold two more batteries then you run all this through a switch that changes it from generator power to battery power,i got mine as a kit throug rv,s of america,they sell a complete kit for doing this,it took days to get this on and get it working right,but now i have a switch up front by the driver area that you throw that switches it to generator and then you use the invertor that came with the kit to run the tv vcr microwave,and just about all the lights are now on 12 volt dc,i got 3 batteries one for the main part of the rv and the other two power the invertor,its not hard to do they send complete insructions with the kit,its calle an update kit and works on all older model rv,s.it cost around 900 bucks though but it remidies the problesm of not having power,when i first looked at all the stuff it came with i freaked out,i thought there was no way i would get it to work,but we did,you dont get the generator with the kit though,that you have to buy seprately,you get the hook ups for it though,and you get a choice of getting gas or a diesel generator now,when i bought mine all i could get was a gas one,check their web site out on this ,go to the accessory part when you click on it it goes to power,you can sullpy your own generator though and it still works right,they just like to sell you a generator if they can,good luck with it.

First is the type of traction motor that is driving the wheels. Next is the weight of the entire load to be moved by the traction motors. Also is the grade the load is being moved upon. When a locomotive gets up to speed it might not be using many amps by the traction motors to maintain the speed. However, to start from a dead stop on flat track with a very heavy load it could run as high as 200 or more amps. Again, it also would depend upon the number of engines driving the number of generators driving the number of traction motors. A single locomotive might need to use more amps to get up to speed than a combination of locomotives hauling the same load. There are many variables to this question. Given a particular locomotive, types of traction motors, the load weight, it would be easier to calculate what would be needed in amperage. Everything depends upon all of these things. An engineer can burn up a traction motor(s) by exceeding the amount of amps maximum that the motor can handle. The generators don't care, nor do they figure into the problem. The diesels don't care either. They will just turn the generators faster with more RPM's, and the faster they run, the more the generators will produce, but will the traction motors handle what is given them?? It just depends .

Q: I need the information to do a science project - how is this electrical energy stored?: It's funny you should ask because I was just researching the wind energy subject while looking at getting a job with a company that makes generators. Generally I've found that it isn't! Wind power is usually expected to be supplimental to the power grid because you can't depend on it 24/7. The only exceptions to this are remote areas where they have no power grid access and even then they usually have diesel generators too. I have seen small ones on sailing boats where I'm sure it just tops up their batteries. Waste byproducts are zero or even negative. I say negative because in a lot of places the excess power is fed back into the power grid reducing the need for the other power stations to pollute as much. In fact the only bad things I've heard are from those that think they are an eye sore, those that think they are noisy (which generally are not) and those that think birds will crash into them. it's funny that they don't complain about the glowing ones that nest at my local nuke generating plant tho ;o)

If you look at Hydro electric installations they usually start with a large dam that stores a huge a mount of water from a river. The height of the water creates a large pressure at the bottom of the dam where the water is relaesed through sluices to turn massive generators. Compared with the natural flow of the river that would not be able to turn relatively small generators. So waterwheels in a river can produce electricicty but a 40KVA may be too big

You should change the oil and filters after every 200 hours operating time. Properly maintained you should expect at least 25-30 years operating time from the engine. Neglected and it could need replacing in less than 10. Not sure what 161 gsm/hp-hr means. Unlikely to be grams, but gallons per horsepower hour would be extremely high. Need to look further into it
