Q: I could see how it could benefit certian classes of commercial trucks, heavy equitment;ect!but what about passanger cars though?
Diesel -electric has long been used in trains, buses, ships, mine equipment. Diesel has 30% more energy per gallon over gasoline. Diesel is a by-product that is refined from trying to make gas from crude oil. Diesel can also be made from soy beans, coal oil, vegtable oils, used cooking oils. The new Blue tec diesel engines exhaust is even cleaner then the air that went into the air filter--(cleans the air as you drive). Diesel doesn't evaporate ,. The old vw rabbits use to get 48 mpg highway---that was 24 years ago, diesel engines have gotten cleaner and more powerful for their size. Generators normally never go above 3600 rpms. So the idea of a engine that has so many ways to make the fuel, fuel that has more energy per gallon, cleans the air as it drives, the engine has plenty of torque for it's size and weight---just makes scents to me that it would make a good hybrid
Q: Hi. I'm thinking about getting a Kubota Diesel Generator. I have read in many places that the Kubota Diesel engine is the gold standard of Diesel engines. So I'm not worried about that. What i need to know is this, is the generator as a whole dependable? Will over loading it for a few short seconds when the AC compressor kicks in burn it out or shorten its life?Any other insight would be appreciated. Thanks for your answers
Kubota diesel plants are being used more and more in industry, replacing some of the old standbys like Kohler, Perkins and even Caterpillar in lighter applications. I don't think you will regret buying a Kubota.
Q: I know that various types of locomotive's produce different amount of horse power. Here's the question: A single locomotive (any type) about what would be the average speed it could gain in 0 to 4 seconds on take off. Any smart A** answer will be reported for abuse, Thank you.
That's an interesting question. They vary so much, dont know if there is an average speed that would be of any relevance. I cant really improve on what has been said except to add a few comments. as you might have guessed acceleration, all you can possibly get is very important at times. Newer locomotives have taken most of the fun out of switching, too much computer controls. With the older ones, that is what made the difference between just an engineer and a hoghead. 8 throttle (all you got) full independent brakes, relaese the brakes and close the generator field switch all at once was about the quickest move, not sure the speed you would get in 4 seconds but it would be too fast for a switchman to get on. When I started on the Milwaukee in the early 70's, we still had the old electrics. If a switchman started getting cocky an engineer would make him a bet, he would say you stand right here at the front of the engine and i will take off, if you can catch the rear footboard I'll give you $10.00. With a light engine he couldnt do it, those things took off like a rocket, they didnt have to build up any amperage waiting for the deisel engine to rev , the full line voltage was immediatly available overhead. P.S., this has been very difficult for me not to be at least a tiny little bit of a smarta**, takes a lot of self control. LOL
Q: If an 5MW diesel generator works for 30 days non stop how much diesel will it use.
the rule of thumb is that an efficient diesel, working continuously burns 1 gal/hr for every 15hp developed. A 5MW generator therefore requires about 6,705 hp. 6705/15 447 gal/hr in 30 days30 * 24 *447 321,840 gallons. Given that very large engines can be extraordinarily efficient, which will make up for some of the mechanical and electrical losses, a good guess would be 300,000 gallons
Q: i started work in a company and i have to maintain a fuel record of diesel generators.i need to know about this term, kindly answer me in good and easy manner and get 10 points.
As opposed to mileage on a vehicle, the hours meter keeps record of the hours of operation, for servicing, etc.
Q: How long can I run a Diesel Power Generator before I have to stop it to give it a rest? Also, how many years can I expect a Cummins Diesel Generator to run if maintained properly? One more thing. In the spec sheet of the generator I'm looking at, it states 161 gsm/hp-hr. Is that 161 Grams per Horse Power per hour?So what does that meanHow many liters per hour does that translate too. Thanks for your answers.Greetings from Iran
The engine can run indefinitely without needing to stop for a rest provided it is properly maintained and cooled. You should change the oil and filters after every 200 hours operating time. Properly maintained you should expect at least 25-30 years operating time from the engine. Neglected and it could need replacing in less than 10. Not sure what 161 gsm/hp-hr means. Unlikely to be grams, but gallons per horsepower hour would be extremely high. Need to look further into it
Q: Having a basic background in electric and family moving into a remote prefab home with no electric, water, or gas, I decided to help. House and work shed electric requirements are simple, totaling a possible 5kwh at a given time to the shed, and 7kwh to the home. Obviously the home will have constant electric requirements (fridge, fans, etc). I cannot imagine it is economical nor efficient to run a diesel generator 24/7 for energy production as needed. Here are my questions:1. Should I use a stand-alone or emergency backup generator.2. Should I go with the conventional wisdom of choosing a generator that operates at 80% capacity for 1005 of my needs. IE: I need exactly 12kw maximum, so a ~14kwh generator.3. Solar panels have storage batteries. Can I use 12v or 18v, or an industry specific battery to only operate the generator for several hours a day for storgae of power? I know this is incredibly inefficient, any alternatives?Any help is greatly appreciated. Just need to be pointed in the right direction.
when you are using your generator, if you have out side power turn it off. look for farms some of them have PTO generators they hook up to a tractor.
Q: I recently seperated the generator from the engine and replaced the rear main oil seal on the engine the electric generator was only moved back about 16-18 inches to access rear main seal. job went well with no problems after completeing job I turned down rpms to about 1000 rpm It was put back in service They use it to power up refer containers from the harbor. the next day I check it and they had turned up rpms to ??? as fast as it would run and 12 refer units running off it oh it's 480 volt well it ran for a week non stop and broke down and of corse it was my fault all i did was unbolt drive plate on front of rotor from flywheel of engine .est to repair is 6,000 could this be my fault after it ran for a week or caused from hi rpms and heat related possibley
If they need a scapegoat, you're it. However if it ran for 168 hours on a diesel engine and things were not RE-torqued/double checked
Q: i read alot, maybe them all, but i cant understand how yachts work or get their power from. Please help !!
Most non-sailboat yachts longer than 40 feet (and up to 300 feet or more) are diesel powered using one or several large Caterpillar, Man, John Deere, Detroit or other similar large diesel engines. A yacht shorter than 40 feet is often gasoline powered. None are battery powered. All large yachts have diesel generators which are used to generate electric power for the onboard electrical systems. When a yacht is docked it usually obtains power from the shore using a large cable that connects to shore power supply systems. Yachts with sails usually also have a single small diesel engine that allows them to maneuver in harbors and other places where sailing might be dangerous or impossible.
Q: China Diesel older generator. Hasn't been used for years, however, supposedly started biannually. Someone messed with the wiring. rewired much of the controls and all meters appear to be working. Have 240V no load, when applying a load to one leg, the 120V drops to 0V. Suspect the exciter not working. located the the 4 Stator cables and 2 smaller wires coming from generator. Suspect the 2 smaller are the excitation wires. According to the poorly edited Chinese to English manual. I have no idea which is F+ or F- and how important will it be to get this correct when applying the 12V as suggested in the trouble shooting guide??
If you are seeing a voltage with no load, there is at least some residual magnetism in the field. Flashing the field probably wouldn't make any difference. I'd look for an open field winding or bad regulator if your machine uses brushes. If your machine is brushless, check for an open exciter winding, bad regulator, shorted or open diodes in the rotating field or open windings in the rotating field. There's a good chance that you can find decent troubleshooting advice for your generator on the smokstak forum. Fieldlines is another good resource. Don
