- Q: I have put together a 4 cylinder peugeot diesel and an 8 kw alternator.At first it was direct coupled to run at 1500 rpm but didn't have enough grunt when i struck an arc with my mig welder. I then put in a lay shaft the engine runs at 2275rpm alternator at 1500rpm. same problem engine allmost stalls under heavy load. At this speed the engine is producing max torque 70 lb ft the alt should only need 33 lb ft. pls help

- Fill your tank to the very top, all the way to where it is almost overflowing. Then run the engine for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, hours, or however long you want but for simplicity sake do it at an least an hour or a whole 60 minutes for easy division (remember that a generator will use more fuel when it is being taxed by running something off of it than it will while simply running with nothing using its power). Then turn the engine off and refill the tank to the exact amount you originally filled it to while at the same time making sure you know exactly how much fuel you are putting in (use a measuring cup). Once you know how much fuel it takes to fill the tank to the point you originally filled it you will have the basis for your equation which will be: amount of fuel consumed (the amount you replaced) divided by the time the engine ran.

- Air cooled: bigger, noisier, hotter, dirtier, simpler to maintain, more expensive, no freezing risk, burn more engine oil. Liquid-cooled: all the opposite than above.

- Can you post the actual question as written? You have to be able to somehow get a kWh value out of the diesel generator. Otherwise, the answer to the question is 0 days. You can't put gas into a diesel generator and expect it to do anything.

- Q: I have a bunch of old diesel left over from y2k, a family friend stored 10k gallons and its turned a brown color, it dosent small funny at least to me, still looks red if you put it up to the light but it is not vivid red like it used to be it has a dingy brown color. - you will need to govern them together, other wise if one is running slightly slower than the other the slower one will act as a motor and not a generator/ alternator. so both must turn at the same rpm speed. then its just wiring configuration delta - delta or Y - Y configurations.

- The cost of diesel goingup is actually good for railroads. Due to their efficiency they move much more freight per gallon of fuel than a truck. As fuel goes up, the railroads are better able to compete and like any business, it is just one more expense and they have to pass it on to their consumers. There is vegetable oil substitutes for diesel fuel but I dont think we have anywhere near the capacity to produce the amount of vegetable oil necessary to replace petroleum based fuel. Turning our food sources into fuel does not seem to be a wise choice, look at the increase in global food prices as we race toward burning more and more corn in our gas tanks. I dont see going back to steam as being an environmentally acceptable substiture, perhpas onboard steam turbine generators but I dont see it happeing. What we are using now is better. Straight electric locomotives work better than diesel once the overhead system is installed, it is expensive but can be done. The country would need more generating capacity but that can be done also. Railroads using clectrictiy via overhead lines are quite efficient, they recycle electricity as trains go downhill. In the future, that is what you will see, starting in inner city areas first but the country will move toward more electrics in a greener world.
