- Q: Basically, I want to set up the new homestead off grid and would like to do it with a diesel generator to a DC disconnect, to a charge controller, to a battery bank, to the system meter, to the main DC disconnect, to an inverter, then to an AC breaker panel. Just like a solar array system but using the diesel instead of panels for the first year or two. The home will be using no more than about 22kWH daily. I guess the main question is how do I use a diesel generator in place of 19, 210W solar panels without running the generator 24-7?
- You can do anything you like providing of course you don't have your neighbours banging on your door asking you to turn that racket off! Or worse still you could have the noise control officer ordering you to shut it down! co's it's disturbing the neighbours!! It's different if you live in the country, but you will still have to find some way of muffling the noise from the diesel exhaust . In some countries like NZ what power you don't use can go back into the national grid the power company actually pay you! Sounds good eh!! Cheers!

- There is no exact formula. Each engine is unique and the manufacturer has a fuel consumption chart for each engine. It is usually in BTU's per horsepower hour or the metric equivalent. It all has to do with engine efficiency and fuel heating value. See below:
- Q: I have an old generator that the motor doesn't run. I want to salvage the generator head and make something like a wind, steam, or bio diesel generator I haven't made my mind up yet. - There are several models of the 20K Westerbeke. Can you post up which model you have? It could be as simple as an adjustment. The actuators do not generally fail. However, if you have a lot of hours, say 2000, then the actuator spring may be worn out. Please post up your model and I will see what I can do. Also you can email me.

- Doesn't. Rotor (w/ magnets) spins in a stator (coil). When power transfer switch detects a loss of line power, isolates line feed (to prevent linemen from getting zapped), lines up load feed (to house or wherever) and trips starter circuit to gen-set. Or, you go out to shed,shut off your main, plug in your auxiliary cord, and pull-start the SOB.

- well cummins is the best when it comes to pickups. they've been proven over the years with making good motors. Their warranty is good (on ohe engines) you just can't beat them. and depending on the milage and wether it's a 12 or 24 valve you cant beat a CTD. I love minebut if dodge went to cat I'd trade it off in a heartbeat. if it's a 98 4x4 there's a problem with the truck. and if it's a 2wd the milage is through the roof. which is alright i guess. a cummins will run for AT LEAST 500k until it needs an overhaul. it's your call but i'd be suspicious when it comes to 3300 for a 98 12 or 24 valve. they shouldn't be that cheap.

- Depending on where you live, your main power may occasionally be supplied by a large diesel generator. During power outages I use a 5500 watt generator to supply power to my home. The computer is on backup power and I have never had a problem. There is absolutely no reason for concern if you have a good quality generator that works properly. If your generator supplies a stable output voltage it will work fine. However if your generator operates near it maximum load and the output voltage varies in frequency and voltage there is a possibility of damage to equipment connected. A UPS may assist, but unless the generator is perfect the UPS will switch to battery power. After a short time the battery will run down and the computer shut off.
