Q:I am thinking about installing solar panels on my roof and I am just wondering if it will be possible to completely get my house off the grid. I live in the state of Missouri. I am thinking to buy a house in Florida also and I want to install solar panels on that house if I ever buy it. How many KW will it take lets say for an average 3-4 BDRM?
you might consider going of the grit including geothermal cooling maybe heating (we have heating) since it gets warm there sometimes (so i hear) - this will bring your electric use up again, we doubled ours to ~1400 kwh/month or better depending on the weather, cooling uses less energy with geothermal. regarding solar, keep an eye on solar pv and new developments in the near future
Q:I Live In Westchester NY, and ever since the Nuclear power plant in Japan went into meltdown I've been pretty worried about what would happen if Indian Point went into meltdown. Now Hurricane Irene is coming, Is it strong enough to cause a meltdown? Thanks in advance

Q:I'm estimating 81 mpg at best, and 47 mpg at worst.
Probably - with serious optimization - about the same as from gasoline/electric hybrids, maybe a little worse. Most people are as surprised as I was to find out the maximum theoretical efficiency of a diesel engine is about 50% while the maximum theoretical efficiency of a gasoline (otto cycle) engine is about 65%. It has to do with the diesel adding heat at constant pressure while the otto cycle engine adds heat at constant volume. Anyway, gasoline engines typically fall behind because the theoretical maxima are at infinite compression ratio with perfectly insulated cylinder heads, cylinders, and pistons. Diesel engines are capable of much higher compression ratios than gasoline engines, and the method of throttling gasoline engines has the effect of reducing the compression ratio even more. That has given diesel engines a reputation for efficiency and they are more efficient than turbine engines (about 40% max) and rockets (about 12% max). However, hybridization has allowed gasoline engines to reach efficiencies that are not very practical for diesels. The current generation Prius spends a lot of engine operation at 38% efficiency - the 2016+ is supposed to reach 40%. Diesels can't compete; although that represents only 61% of the theoretical max for gas engines it is 80% of the theoretical max for diesels, and that last bit of efficiency is the very devil to achieve. It would require entirely new materials and other major improvements. As the source says, Conventional gasoline engines have long run about 25 percent, diesels at 30 to 35 percent.
Q:I have a Kubota GL7000 portable diesel generator. now I've followed the recommended maint. schedule on it, new fuel filters, oil filters, oil changes, etc. I have just under 1,000 hours on it right now, it smokes a little when it's cold but when it warms up it runs nice and smooth and with no smoke, it seems to me that it's running really solid and I have no complaints or problems, but I'm curious how long a generator like this (2 years old) should last me?
Just give it a lot of love and it'll last a real long time. haha And when it dies, get another. Don't worry about it.
Q:Diesel generator selection criteria?
into the network at the same time the provisions of quality certification testing of diesel generator to implement the communication rules
Q:has anyone ever heard of a 50cc diesel engine? if so, where could i get one and how much is it?also, i just want the engine, i dont want the rest of the scooter, bike, etc.
diesel motorcycle engines were made for the military. They are about 700 cc's and very expensive and rare. 50cc diesels were never made.
Q:ie a ships diesel generator.
I'm assuming by trip you mean shut down/off Plenty of reasons: 1) overheat, most common cause, could be lost water pump or water supply or cooling lines plugged 2) electrical, although diesel does not use sparkplugs there are electrical components. There are glow plugs that get the whole process started when cold, there is a starter motor that gets it all going and there is some method to keep the fuel warm enough to flow correctly 3) Starve for fuel, either fuel ran out, to low temp so its sludge 4) Loss of oil pressure that is used for lubrication 5) Ouput limits, there will be an overcurrent/overvoltage system regulating the output of he generator and if it gets really out of wack then it will kill the whole thing to prevent damage to everything That's all I can think of right now
Q:Does anyone currently live off grid?If so, what type of alternate power system(s) are you using?Solar? ---(I think very expensive and in this part of the country, not enough sun.)Hydro-electric? ---(may be a viable choice if I have enough current running through my stream and or enough head from a waterfall)Wind? --- (If It is installed high enough and does not obscure.)Diesel Generator---(may be ok if underground, low speed, water cooled)We are planning to build a log home in up-state Pa. as a second home for now, but our primary residence in a few years. Thanks in advance for your answers!Newt
i don't know about your possibilities where you are but i would definitely suggest using as much natural lighting as possible and the alternate wood heating furnaces available
Q:I have put together a 4 cylinder peugeot diesel and an 8 kw alternator. At first it was direct coupled to run at 1500 rpm but didn't have enough grunt when i struck an arc with my mig welder. I then put in a lay shaft the engine runs at 2275rpm alternator at 1500rpm. same problem engine allmost stalls under heavy load. At this speed the engine is producing max torque 70 lb ft the alt should only need 33 lb ft. pls help
The alt is what RPM you will set the engine atMost 120-240 volt are 50 HRX and run at 1800or 3600 so if it's the 3600 back end your using the wrong engineUnless you use a pulley and belt to get the correct RPMMY 8K Diesel marine ONAN direct drive 3cyc runs at 1800 Rpm If your over loading the genset than no engine will workwhat is the load your pulling as 8K is 80 amps Max single 240V or 40 amp double 120V
Q:How to convert kVA (kilo-volt Ampere) to kg/h (kilogram per hour) for diesel generator set (genset)? I want to know the relation about the energy produced (kVA) to the fuel that used (kg/h) in the genset, either it used more diesel fuel or not. i.e the kVA amount produced is 106kVA and the rpm is 1500rpm
There is no way to make a direct conversion, but an estimate can be attempted, in lieu of an actual measurement. For the size of generator and speed you are using, a reasonable fuel rate of about 9.1 gal/hr is probably representative for full load. In that case, assuming 3.19 kg/gallon, you will have 29 kg/hr for your engine. So, for full load, you might use a factor of 3.65 kVA per 1kg/hr. As the load decreases, your conversion factor will reduce somewhat.
