- Q: Can sum1 tell me how i can tell if my valves are in the right place?I notice there are holes in the valves, please explain how those holes are suppose to face to for each of the 3 valves?
- Put the correct valve in the valve case. (There is usually a notch that guides the placement, but it is not always accurate enough.) Blow gently into the trumpet, (you don't need to play, just blow as you do to clear the spit valves). If you feel a resistance, rotate the valve until the resistance is gone. When there is no resistance with the valve up, depress the valve and blow again. There should be no resistance there either. Repeat with each valve.

Don't over tighten. Dry off area around new valve so you can more easily detect leaks. Reopen supply water to HW heater, let faucets run until no more air comes out, then shut faucets. Put regulator back on. Done.
- Q: I got new sprinkler valves put in (Rainbird anti-siphon kind). Every time a valve shuts off, it makes a loud squeak, kind of like plastic rubbing (NOT a bang like water hammering). The shaft guides the plug portion by sliding through a valve.. not sure if you are talking about tire valve stems? if so the poppet valve moves within the valve stem. - Your initial respondant hit on the basic question - 1. A biologic valve which will need a least one replacement again sometime in your mother's lifetime (though maybe at that time a better alternative might be available). 2. A mechanical valve which has an unlimited lifetime but requires life-long and very careful attendant focus on taking anti-coagulation medication, lest she be at risk for stroke or complications associated with bleeding. On the positive, it typically never requires replacement. At this point, both valves are likely to do the job. I have ancedotally seen some unfortunate complications associated with biologic valves - but it may have to do with biologic valves being used more frequently as most individuals needing this surgery are older. (and therefore select the biologic valve more frequently) Having an open heart surgery is about as big of an operation as you can have and is never undertaken lightly - let alone thinking of making a decision to have several of these surgeries over a time. It is a highly personal decision which does not have a right answer. If your mother is very good about taking medication and getting follow-up blood tests, then a mechanical valve might be right for her. If she has multiple other medical problems and is generally of ill health, she might want to consider the biologic valve. Generally speaking, for a woman in her 40's, generally healthy, and generally good about following regimen, then a mechancal valve is probably the right way to go for her. I hope this is helpful. - Burnt valves or, far more likely, bent valves. Either way, you'll need to basically overhaul the top end - you'll need to replace the bad valves and the top end gasket set along with any machine work that may be necessary. Estimates will vary greatly from facility to facility and also from different areas. To get a valid estimate for your locality, you need to get local estimates.
- Q: according to my study only indurial gate valves have both rising and non rising stem through handwheel and it seems that it doesnot apply to golbe valve and globe valves are only non rising stem. i wanted to know if this is right
- so non rising stem valves are usually used on only clean liquids long of stem is the same
- Q: I've just been told that I need to replace the valve cover gasket on my 97 Volvo 850.....to the tune of $650.00 .....ouch.....is it that difficult to fix?......can you use the red gasket sealant? is there a difference between the head gasket and the valve cover gasket.......yeah I know there probably is.......but when I look on line all i can find is head gaskets......no valve cover gaskets........which scares me into thinking they are the same thing.....i'm hopeing i'm wrong......if its the valve cover gasket it looks like it would be right on top of the engine and fairly accessable.......or am I wrong......sure would like to save the $650 if it is something i can do myself!!!!
- Valve Cover Gasket is a tuff thing to fix alone. I would say, take it to the shop and pay the $650.00- look at it like this, at least you will have a garentee if anything goes wrong you take that bad boy back and have them hook it up the right way! Best of Luck!
