The carpet has not been cleaned for three years, and is very dirty. The stain was pretreated immediately after the incident, but never got out. I am going to clean the carpet now, and here is my plan. Q: it rained and water got in my carpet . it is humid/wet it smells bad how do i wash the carpet?: Rent a steam cleaner and purchase white vinegar. Sprinkle baking soda all over the humid wet carpet. let is soak into the carpet. Then using the steam cleaner and white vinegar start using the steam cleaner and try to soak up most all of the wetness. If you have a carpet padding under the carpet you will need to roll up the carpet and hang it over a dry area outside or in the garage to totally dry. As for the carpet padding you will need to try to suck out the wetness from that too and get it dry. Even using old towels will help. If you can also pull the padding up it will dry better too. When both the padding and carpet is dry. Sprinkle baking soda on the floor after it is cleaned and then lay the carpet padding back down. Sprinkle more baking soda down over the padding so this will help kill any bacteria and smells. Replace the carpet and vacuum the carpet and it should have taken care of the wet carpet and smells. However the carpet got wet it should be fixed that it will not happen again. Carpets and padding don't last long after so much water has set into the carpet and padding. That is why it should be thoroughly dry before putting them back down on the floor. Yes this sounds like a lot of work, and it is but the water needs to be completely out of the floor and padding, and carpeting to last as long as you can keep it in good condition. It will also help your floors to not mold.

Q: My cat likes to back her rear end up to the edge of the litter box, resulting in her 'missing the target' and getting cat urine on my carpet. Would it just make the stain worse, by getting more of the litter wet?: I don't think the carpet cleaner will make it worse, but the urine may have soaked into the padding subfloor. Could you get a covered litter box. Our cat also had the same prob I replaced the tray with a covered box there is no longer the 'missing the box' prob the litter around the box is only from tracking, not kicking. If you think kitty cannot or will not use a new box, then you could invest in a high-quality doormat type little rug--like the ones people put in front of the exterior doors for wiping their feet. These rugs have water-proof backing so the urine will not soak through. Then all you have to do is rinse it off with the hose outside or wash on 'gentle' in the washing machine line dry. The backing will eventually crumble by washing it in the machine, that's why I suggest hosing it off outside. But you could also use Rug Doc to clean it periodically or invest (or ask for X-mas or your b-day) for a carpet cleaner or Spot Bot. Anything else will just get soaked through still get to the carpet. You could always put a tarp under the litter box. Sorry about the long post. Q: I have rented the rug doctor before and have been satisfied w/ the results. I am in an apartment and not willing to pay for more. It works great for the $20 rental. I always use a half cap of tide with febreze laundry soap. You can get really any detergent you like. It will freshen and make the carpet smell great. Gain works well also. If you buy a high efficiency detergent, it will help with less sudsing but you should try the tide with febreze or the arm and hammer that has oxi clean stain fighters with it or tide with dawn scrubbers. It shouldn't harm the baby because detergent you wash clothes with. You could clean the carpet with baby detergent called dreft.
