All motors should have a nameplate that identifies the voltage, current, frequency, DC/AC and number of phases, which answers your question. They all sound the same. DC motors are used for low power applications, and for cases where precise position is needed, such as a motor for a CD player. Large DC motors are used in electric vehicles as they are operated from batteries. Single phase AC motors are used for appliances for the home, such as washing machines, etc. and for small industrial uses. Three phase AC motors are used for large industrial uses such as elevators, industrial equipment. With a permanent magnet DC motor (like from a battery powered toy) this will work fine. An AC motor is less likely to work, in normal operation the magnetic field that makes an AC motor work is produced by the electricity going into it, so if no power is going into it there is no magnetic filed to make it act as a generator, actually there might be a little stray magnetism or there are methods of getting it started with a pulse of external power, but the PM DC motor will be easiest . You are trying to run a 24V controller and motor from a 12V battery. The controller is trying to supply the power required but since the volts are half what they should be, the curent is doubled. Thats why the smoke tries to get out. Easy fix though, just get another battery and connect them in series. Did you have the battery polarities correct?

Universal motors are usually series connected, meaning the armature and field are in series. You have to reverse the connections ro one of them, the armature or the field. The wiring will look like supply active, field in, field out, brush in (to armature), brush out, supply return. The capacitor is a electrical noise suppressor, just connected across the supply, or sometimes across the brushes. If it is shunt wound as you seem to describe (meaning the field is across the supply and so is the armature) then the solution is still the same, reverse one of them.
Q: Here's the issue - Fan won't work at all unless it is on THE very highest setting. If I turn the heater on (with the fan at the highest setting), the heater works. The AC does not.
