Q: I recently bought a 1992 Honda Accord. It has high mileage but the records kept on it were impecable up to about the last 3 years. Piston (reciprocating type: Also a displacement operation by a piston moving backwards and forwards within a cylinder (like a hypodermic syringe in operation). Back stroke takes water into the cylinder and forward stroke discharges it at a higher pressure. (Double acting types are also used that take in and discharge alternately from both ends).

These are the so called jet pumps or deep well pumps wherein part of the output water is returned back to the bottom of the well pipe through the space between the outer pipe casing and the inner pipe and passed through a venturi opening to create an upward water jet which will push more water upward.

To size a pump, you need to know the flow rate you are trying to acheive (gallons per minute) and the total head (feet) you are trying to acheive. GPM is based off the max flow rate of the fixtures you are using at any given time. Fixtures such as toilets and sinks have typical flow rates. Head is calculated by taking your incoming water pressure (psi) and subtracting pressure losses from pipes and fittings (psi) and working pressure of your furthest fixture. For a small building, like a house, you can probably estimate your head to be the height of your building (incoming water pipe to ceiling of top floor). If that distance is 30 feet, you'll want a pump to acheive 30 feet of head at about 5 gpm. 5 gpm will allow for a shower and a sink to run at the same time. Toilets are low gpm unless you are using flush valves instead of flush tanks. I've never heard of Valco or Davey. In commercial applications, I've always used Bell and Gossett, but that may be overkill. Just make sure the pump you are getting is a pressure booster pump and not another kind of pump.

Q: I have some black RTV silicone that I got with a gasket for my oil pan. Can I use some on a gasket for a water pump instead of regular sealant or is there a particular type I need? If there is a certain or preferred type please give me a link to it at like autozone or something, thanks!: Sealant or silicone is usually used instead of a gasket. A gasket is made to seal and does not need any other kind of sealant. If installing a gasket and you do not want it to move then you use a glue, but just enough to keep the gasket in place. Glue like 3M. If installing a Eng. oil pan gasket where it takes a rubber end or an intake manifold gasket then you use a silicone where the rubber meets the paper or cork gasket. This is for insurance only. Some oil pans don't use a paper gasket then you use a silicone. Lay a good 1/4 inch bead around the block and let it get tacky then carefully install the oil pan. On the water pump, it wont hurt to put silicone to hold the gasket in place, and also insurance in case it leaks Good luck

Q: I have a 2000 chevy impala with 85K on it. I have heard/a weird rattle noise from under the hood for some time now. I once asked about it on here and got suggestions regarding front end problems. I had that checked out and the front end is good. I still have the rattle noise along with a high pitched, but not very loud, squeeling noise when I accelerate. I am leaking coolant and it seems to be coming from near one of the belts. Is this a bad water pump? If so how expensive of a fix is it and how involved of a repair is it?: It sounds like a water pump or maybe a loose connection. It is probably time for a water pump if it hasn't been replaced yet. Parts will run under $60 and it probably involves an hour of labor. The Impala is a big car, it shouldn't be hard to get to and remove. Taking it to a shop will run under $100-$150 for everything.
