- Q: We use this water pump for about 2 years, and in the last week the circuit breaker trip when we turn on the pump. What should I check first for the problem?
- When the pump motor starts, it engages a start winding that can draw enough current tripping the breaker in question. I would recommend that you change the breaker. It may have become weak after years of operation of said pump. It is a very good idea to dedicate a breaker for this motor. This configuration will insure that there's not another appliance in the circuit that may cause this problem of overloading said breaker when a limit switch closes to turn on the pump. Have the fuel pressure checked in the fuel rail pressure fitting beside the fuel injector nozzles. No need to change the fuel pump if the pressure is at least 35 psi. No way in heck should it cost $900. to have the water-pump and thermostat replaced on your car. A water pump/timing belt is cheaper than a new van or motor. I think both are required when doing a pump on that one, so I'm guessing that's why we've not fixed it?

- The water pump should come off the block with 4 bolts, the gasket goes between the body and rear plate. The o- ring fits onto the transfer tube that travels between the valley of the block. Add a little lube to it to make installing the pump and cover easier. The lower t belt gear should slide off easily, if not a bit of heat may help, careful not to break the oil pump (front end of block). The upper cam gears are best loosened slightly while the belt is still installed. If not try slipping the old belt over the gear and holding the outside of the gear/ the belt. Air tools may be required due to torque required.
- Q: Can I use Ultra Blue gasket maker on a water pump? The packaging is not labeled high heat.
- Yes, but you have to let the gasket maker cure for at least 24 hours. After you have driven it for a couple days, be sure to re-tighten the flange bolts, as the gasket maker will shrink with heat, causing possible leakage. Good Luck !
