Our Project
- Q:One repair shop on the phone says I will need new water pump, coolant flush and *850.00. On the other hand the dealer says I may need tow other drive belts (alternator +). Second dealer says I may need a water pump! I do not wish to get stuck with extra costs! any one with experience?
- Do you NEED a new water pump? No. Is it a good idea at this mileage to do the WP with the T-belt? Yes. The reason being if the water pump were not replaced and it were to fail at some point in the future you would have to pay all of that labor again since the timing belt has to be removed to get at it. Now the pump may never fail but it could which is why this is recommended as preventive maintenance. A T-belt on this car whether 4 or 6-cylinder books for 3.0 hours of labor time. Adding the water pump while the mechanic is already in there just adds 0.4 to 0.7 hours of labor time and the cost of the pump and coolant flush. Since the coolant flush is probably due anyway that really isn't even an additional cost. Similarly, the accessory drive belts have to come off when doing the timing belt. If they are worn or still original there is no labor additional charge to replace them at this time, just the cost of the parts. In the end it is up to you. To save money now you can opt just to replace the Timing Belt and perhaps the accessory belts as well and leave the pump alone. Ideally a water pump will last the life of the engine but then my shop replaces 4-5 water pumps a week that have failed so it can and does happen. If you opt to leave it alone just keep in mind that if it does fail you will have to pay all that labor a second time. If your willing to take that risk then....
- Q:I'm going to buy a pump to take water from a lake and use it to water the grass at my cottage. I would like to run at least 2 hoses at the same time. I'm looking at one that's 3/4 horse. Is this too small? The yard is a little more than an acre.
- A 3/4 horse pump usually has a one inch suction and 3/4 inch outlet and is more than enough to water one acre. Remember, you don't have to water every day or even cover the entire acre all in one day. The industrial/agricultural pump mentioned before (4 inch? 6 inch? Or more?) is intended for use on dozens of acres per day.

- Q:One month ago, mechanics replaced water pump for my car, 04 dodge stratus, 100000 miles. When I went to get the car, there was big noise coming out from engine. The mechanics told me it was because of sediment in auto oil system and he show me some sediment he took out. I know little about car so I thought he was right. But now the noise changed and engine light came on. I went to firestone to check it. The report said timing jump and cranked. The second day the engine died totally. And I went to another two mechanics. They said the previous one who replaced the water pump did something wrong to timing chain. But that mechanics didn't admit it. What can I do?
- You have a good case for small claims court, but you'll have to prove the facts in court, not here on yahoo. 1) Prove that the first shop changed your water pump. (I think there's a good chance that mechanic did, indeed, mess up the timing.) 2) Get something in writing from any subsequent, licensed mechanic who thinks the timing was changed. At 100,000 miles, there's a fair chance your timing chain could have been old, needing replacement, but if the first guy replaced the water pump, that seems the likeliest culprit. Worse, I hope you didn't ruin the motor. Sometimes when your motor is out of time, you can bend a valve or put a hole in the piston. Better get your motor checked by someone who knows what they're doing then consider your options- small claims or the first mechanic's insurance company. If you talk to the insurance company, you should have a lawyer do the talking. Good luck!!
- Q:How do I check my well water pumping system to see if there is a leak? I have terrible rusty water.
- The radiator surely holds the water/coolant and the pump circulates the mixture via the engine. Upon returning to the radiator, the water is cooled from air passing via the fins of the radiator. The pumps job is to flow the mixture to verify that the nice and comfortable water to relax subsequently, the engine is then cooled.

- disconnect battery, drain the radiator of coolant, move it out of the way, then remove the fan shroud that has a top section and a bottom section, once you have that out of the way, remove the upper and lower radiator hoses, the heater hoses that connect to the water pump too, now remove the fan from the water pump you might have either ac, alternator or power steering in the way, and have other bolts. but basically after you have all the rest of the engine removed it is easy to get the water pump off. clean all new surface area's where gaskets touch , use indian head gasket sealer, its the best kind, when you put the new water pump on the engine make sure all the old gaskets are removed and wire brush the water pump housing, use gasket sealer, let it dry ,then put all the hoses back on, the power steering, alternator etc, all back in place, fill up the radiator, let it get to 190% temp, and make sure the thermostat opens, then you know everythings working,

- Q:Hi. This car is 66 chevy but the motor is a 1984 chevy 350 4bolt main stroked to 383. I think its an '84, might be an '85. I need to replace fan clutch and water pump.... the fan clutch is bad but manufacturer of the replacement parts says you must do water pump and fan clutch together. Is the pump a 66 chevy pump or a 350 small block pump? What about the fan clutch? Ok, and please help with motor mounts. do I use mounts specific for 66 model or specific to the motor?
