Q: I am replacing an old outlet with a GFCI and I have encountered a red wire...what is the red wire for?: It sounds like that receptacle was half switched. Receptacles are designed to have the small brass tab on the black side snap off and one half is constantly alive (black wire)and the other side is connected to a wall switch (red wire). Is this in a room with no ceiling light? Switched outlets are usually for a lamp to turn on as you enter the room. GFCI outlets are not designed to be switched on and off as both sides will go off. Is this room in a basement, kitchen, bathroom or near water pipes? You may not be required to have it GFCI protected. If you can and want a GFCI then try another outlet near by.

Q: for christmas im getting my dad an outdoor speaker system buttheunder groung wire costs ALOT so i was wondering if regular speaker wire will work fine if i used it and burried?: It will work and you probably will have no problems as long is the wire is 18ga or better. Underground cable will last longer but I have seen regular wire last over 10 years. If someone say's that 18ga is to small then why do they put it in the higher end speakers but if you are running over a 100' i would go with 16ga.

Q: What role does the neutral wire play?: It provides the return current path. Without it positive current would have no where to flow once it enters a device. Here's why: Think about you sink... you need a pipe to bring the water in, this is the hot wire. Without a drain the water has no where to go to, this is the neutral wire. Q: plz answer correctly as soon as possible......why we use stranded 500kV wire?: After AWG 12 or 14, all cable is stranded. The only purpose of stranded wire is to give it flexibility, regardless of voltage or current. .

Q: We are replacing an older style submersible 3 wire well pump with a newer style 3 wire plus ground. I do not know where to ground the green wire? Is it necessary to extend the wire from the pump all the way to the top and ground it there or can i just ground it to the pump itself? Any ideas? First time home owner... trying to save money and not call an electrician (Im an avionics technician so I have some what of an idea what im doing.) Thanks: It shouldn't be grounded to back to the pump, it should be brought out and grounded either with the house or a separate grounding rod.
