- Q: I am a new motorcyclist and was just wondering if there were any emergency procedures for this. Our first reaction is to press on the brakes but on a motorcycle that is a terrible idea. I got to realize what that felt like firsthand at the motorcycle safety course. I want to finetune my skills so that I can survive on the city streets. Thanks
- Unless you are doing something really stupid (or at stupid speeds) you can normally lean over further, modern bikes on modern tyres will lean a lot further than you think is possible/safe. Look through and out of the turning, apply a constant progressive push to your inside bar. It is possible to brake while turning –?novices are taught not to do it because it does have associated risks due to a smaller contact patch. Shutting the throttle will tend to stand the bike up, so will pulling in the clutch, however you can roll off the throttle, not much should be necessary. The best technique to get out of the situation is to avoid it at source, through observation and anticipation. Do not consider laying it down – it will hurt and, if you have time to consider and do it, you will have had time to try something far more productive and safer.
- Q: Just got a new motorcycle (used) and am relearning to ride before I take my MSF course. My questions are:Looking for advice on how to use the clutch when starting from a complete stop. I've practiced a little and am looking for some good tips to get better with the clutch and throttle. Either I overrev the throttle or kill it with the clutch.Brakes: the front brake is really grabby. An experienced rider told me two things: use two fingers for the front brake and to try to use the back brake instead of the the front brake. Another rider told me to use both, but didn't say much about technique.I want to have a bit of practice and be smoother before attending the course. Appreciate your advice.
- The way you grip the throttle often dictates what kind of rider you end up being. Your knuckles should always be even with the brake. Unless you want intense speed your knuckles shouldn't be in the space between the throttle/grip and brake lever. When starting off learning to ride I would suggest letting the clutch out half way(50%) and pulling the throttle a tiny bit about 25%. On a motorcycle you don't need a lot of gas to take off, as you may have already noticed. After you pick up enough speed that your feet are off the ground release the clutch and the rest of your speed control relies on the use of your throttle. Use 2 fingers on the front break and it's always good to use both breaks when learning how to ride. When you are using normal breaking, it should be smooth and gradual. Be careful though, because unless your bike has ABS, if your grip either brake too hard and too suddenly you could cause the wheel to lock up. If you lock up the front tire you tend to fly over the bars and if you lock up the rear wheel which is most common, you could fall off as well. If you lock up the rear(when the rear wheel locks up the rear of the bike moves so that the motorcycle isn't lined up straight) you should not release the rear break unless your able to straigten out the bike because if you release the rear break in the situation the bike will quickly and violently line up again you could fall off the bike. Just hold to rear brake until you stop if you find yourself in that situation. You will be fine just practice away from traffic and enjoy the class it's really useful. Invest in quality gear as well and dress for the crash not the ride because it's a very risky world and it happens. Good luck and Happy Riding.
- Q: Do you think 12,000 miles is a lot on this honda, i mean in terms of buying one with this amount of miles on it, all the gaskets and necessities have been changed and runs great, but do you think the mileage might be too much???
- 12,000 miles on a bike from 1974? Not much mileage at all. If the bike has been maintained, as you say it has, I would buy it in a heartbeat if I needed a good entry level machine. The hardest thing about this bike is that it has an old points and condenser ignition system. The points are not hard to get hold of, but he condensers are. Honda may still be supplying them to their dealerships or parts departments, but they are a bit of a pain to get set proper and require vigilant maintenance
- Q: I'm 16 almost 17 years old. Looking to buy a bike so i can drive it to school and work. This would be my 1st bike. Many people told me get a ninja 250 and there nice bikes but can they handle the highway? I would be going 60-70 mph. Would i be shaking around if wind its me? Someone said a suzuki katana.? Looking to spend $3500 but mainly wanna spend under $2500 on a used motorcycle. I weight 150lbs and Im 5-9. Please tell me reason for what your saying
- The Ninja 250 is consistently rated as one of the best beginner bikes around. It can handle the highway, but it will be tossed a bit, as will any other bike. I wouldn't recommend riding on the highway any time soon; you need to get a strong feel for the bike before you try the highway. Another option would be the slightly larger Ninja 500R (older models are called the EX500). Still a good beginner bike, but a little more substantial. Try a few different bikes and see what feels comfortable. Fell will be among the most important factors. You need to feel comfortable and secure on a bike. Good luck!
- Q: Pedal power motorcycle brake system called what name
- Usually the motorcycle before the brakes are more important than the rear brake, so now many motorcycles are front brakes with disc brakes with drum brake, a large row of motorcycles is a front brake with two-disc brakes, rear brake with a single disc brake.
- Q: Motorcycle Brake Skills?
- With ABS is a good brake, the brake will be directly on the rear brake in general the problem is not a big problem. Disc brakes with high sensitivity, try not to stop, the best point brake, analog ABS.
- Q: My 2007 Ninja with only 3000 miles on it and there are grooves in the rotors already. Are small grooves normal or should i have them resurfaced already? thanks
- the groves are normal, unless the disk gets to thin or severely warped it should be okay, my son has the older ninja 250 and we didn't have to replace the disk until 66000 klm (41250) miles.
- Q: Motorcycle exhaust is producing brownish stains on my turn signals, brake light, exhaust pipe, etc.
- I asked my husband this question and right off he said tire cleaner, so you never know but could be worth a shot
- Q: what are the best brake pads for chrome rotors on a motorcycle?
- The smartest thing to do is contact the company that produces the chrome rotors and ask them what they prefer you to run on their product. But from experience I can tell you if you only ride a little and the bike is for more show than go then it probably will not matter. However in our group we have seen rust begin to form on the outer edges of the air holes and then proceed to move in a circular rotation when the chrome begins to chip and gets embedded in the brake pad and then it scores the rest of the rotor. Not a big fan of chrome rotors after paying out the money only to have it happen usually on the first or second ride after sitting all winter.
