Q:My spark plugs and wiring and tubing on my car cylinder (99 Plymouth neon) were drenched in oil. The problem got fixed. or so I thought. The people at advanced read it on their machine before it got repaired and said cylinder 2 misfired. When driving it it surge and kinda hesitate when accelerating. Check engine light came on and off. drove me crazy. After the car got repaired, same thing (a week later, after getting off of the interstate). I even got an oil change 4 hours after it got repaired! What‘s wrong? I‘d like to have a good idea what‘s wrong before I take it back to the shop and/or probably causing it. Bad spark plugs, oil pump cruddy? Help! I‘m hyperventilating.: Once the Computer(ECM) has seen a hard code (like a misfire) it will turn on the engine light and store a trouble code in the computer's memory. That code and Check engine light will not turn off until the ECM's memory is reset/cleared. You will need someone with a scanner to reset/clear the code. It may turn off on its own once it hasn't seen the problem for at least 50 to 100 ignition cycles.

Q:I have a 2006 ford mustang coupe. Yesterday the emission system light turned and has not turned off. Where the mileage usually is it instead says 21 average mph. What does this mean?: The check engine light comes on for emissions related problems. First thing I would do is make sure the gas cap is on tight. Turn it until it makes a few clicks. Believe it or not it is one of the things monitored by the engine management computer. I won't get into the technicalities but a loose cap can cause the light to come on. Give it a day or two and the light should go out. If the light stays on, then you can download the code(s) by stopping into any one of the big chain auto parts stores; they'll do it for free. All this will do it give you a cryptic code and a very brief system description .which may mean absolutely nothing to you. In which case you need to bring it in to a good local repair shop or the dealership and have a diagnostic run .they will be able to interpret the codes and what needs to be done to service your car. The 21 average mph. is a function of the driver information center. I guess you've not read the owners manual. Most cars made within the last 8 - 10 years or so have a multi-function display where the odometer resides. All sorts of info can be selected to display .average mpg's; instantaneous mpg's, miles to go 'til the tank is empty, how much fuel you've used and .the average speed since you last reset the feature. I suggest you read the owners manual .you might be surprised what you can learn about your car.

Q:any way to add either?: It's probably too expensive to add in the factory parts. I would add aftermarket parts, especially for the sound system because you will get a much better quality for less than the cost of the bose.

Q:Fuel gauge was not registering and diagnostic could not find problem but mechanic installed the ELD sensor and this seemed to solve the problem with the fuel gauge although mechanic did not think there was anything wrong with fuel gauge. I was told to bring in car early in morning (6Am) because it will require more diagnostic work to determine why engine light stays on. They mentioned emission problem. I passed NY emissions Inspection a few weeks ago.: The code P1381 is an indication that the ignition coil is breaking down and causing an intermittant loss of the signal. Honda had a service advisory on that code that said if you get the 1381 that the coil is probably faulty. A failing ignition coil would generate a lower voltage (weaker) spark that would cause your low idle. So the first thing to do is to have the ignition coil changed before it fails entirely and the car stops. In this case, the check engine light is doing its job of alerting you to a problem, so take care of it. the P1399 code is just a general failure code that is generated at the same time as the P1381 code and will go away when you fix the primary problem. Also, you don't provide any maintenance history on the vehicle but based on that mileage the car is due for a valve adjustment if it hasn't been done. The valve adjustment is the most critical adjustment on that car with regard to idle quality. The maintenance schedule on that car called for the replacement of the spark plugs, a valve adjustment and idle adjustment every 30,000 miles. If you can't remember the last time it was done its probably time to do that as well. beyond that, the normal maintenance items such as the distributor cap, wires, and rotor should be checked and replaced if they're worn out. start by changing the ignition coil and go from there. hope that helps

Q:My car is running fine but the engine light came on one day.. I took it to advance auto for a free computer reading and it cam out with system or car running lean..I ask the guy he said it could be the O2 sensor? I don't have the money right now to take to a mechanic .. what could it be? and where are the O2 sensor locate in a 2001 ford escort zx2 ?. maybe I can change them.. I did get gas 3days ago and the other I day I had the hood pop‘d when it was raining but i needed to to add ani-freeze (spelt wrong) b/c it was low but we go that fixed now.: It's worth removing and replacing the gas cap, because your ECM (engine control module) will detect a failure of your gas tank to partly pressurize by fuel vapors as a problem with your Evaporative Emissions System, and it will light the Check Engine Light (CEL) to let you know. But the mis-fire could be the cause of the CEL, instead. A mis-fire can cause a number of sensors that feed information to your ECM to go out of scale. And you might even have an ongoing problem that is making additional mis-fires more likely. If your car is newer than 1996, you can stop at any Autozone auto parts store, and ask them to read your car's OBD II port, and tell you the error codes your ECM is storing. Using those codes, they can tell you at least what your car's ECM thinks is wrong, and what parts might need to be replaced or checked.
