Q:My car engine light is on and I need to pass my smog test since it‘s already late. So I‘m wondering about whether to change my cata converter at the dealership or an auto shop. In terms of labor fee, time, cost of the part, which would be a better choice?
Good answers here - mine is too late to be best. I will echo the warning that your catalytic converter is not the top suspect. The youngest converter I have seen that was bad was 18 years old and was on a car with a carburetor. Get it diagnosed and fixed rather than throwing money at it. I have never seen a car with a P0420 code (catalyst efficiency below threshold) that needed a new catalytic converter. Sometimes putting a new converter on will make it enough better for the light to go away for a few months, then it comes back. Fix the cause, not the symptom.
Q:I have a 1997 Plymouth Breeze with the 2.0 four cylinder engine. The light came on over the weekend and I took the car straight to Auto Zone for a scan of the OBD2 system. The only code that registered was P1494, I called the chysler dealership and they said it was a leak in the evap system. Most likely cause was a loose or missing gas cap. I checked for this, and even went to the expense of buying a new one. After the new cap was installed, I had the code erased. I reset my trip meter and drove about 90 miles and the light came back on. I‘ve had a mechanic check the lines and hoses running from the fuel tank to the charcoal canister and then to the engine. All were tight and in good shape. I was also told by the dealership that the leak detection pump might be bad. This is a small vacume pump that keeps a constant vacume to the evap system. My Haynes manual shows this pump, but my mechanic says there isn‘t one on my car. I‘m now being told the problem is my O2 sensors??????
It's very possible that the O2 sensors are the problem. It seems that most of the time when a check engine light comes on, it's to indicate an environmental/anti-pollution system such as this.
Q:2003 pt cruiser ,i had bought a new catalyic converter just looking for someone who can weild it . Previously i had check engine light and oreylies said to change oil pressure sensor and oxygen sensor. I changed oil sensor then light went off for a week then came back on. Auto zone said catalyic converter was below threshold but after traveling 350 miles the light went off . Was wondering why is it off when there is a problem with car when nothing was changed for the catalyic converter.
P0420 is produced by the ECU when the downstream O2 sensor (bank 1 for P0420, P0430 for bank 2) reports a high and fluctuating level of oxygen in the output of the converter. Although it is true the converter is not working right, it is almost always due to bad mixture coming in. If the code definition were changed from catalyst efficiency below threshold (which is true, but not the cause) to excess oxygen in exhaust (which is more accurate and useful) not many mechanics would replace the catalytic converter. The devil of it is replacing the catalytic converter usually clears P0420. for a while. (As thebax2006 says, it is a crap shoot even with the best converters.) After about 2 years the new wears off the converter and the underlying condition gets worse, so the code returns. A new, top quality, converter will usually buy another few months and the code comes back, leaving the owner many thousands of dollars poorer and back where they started. Demsey Dumpster (another answer) fell into that trap even though his is 100% certain to be in mixture control. There are two general causes of P0420: poor mixture control and an exhaust leak ahead of the catalytic converter. A muffler shop can test for and repair exhaust leaks for an affordable price. After that, the next focus is the fuel/air system, including the MAF sensor.
Q:My 4x4 light blinks when I try to switch from 2x4 into 4x4. I have replaced the 4x4 motor on the transfer case, and a new selector switch. Not really sure if anything is making any noise under the truck. Sometimes the 4x4 will go and the light quits blinking. I do not mind spending some money on this truck as it is my all year long truck. Gotta plow snow and if I cannot get the 4x4 to work properly, I am not making any money. Any suggestions, thoughts, or comments would be greatly appreciated. Oh, I do have the push button 4x4. Also, I can sometimes hear a box behind the dash on the drivers side clicking when I push one of the 4x4 switches. It looks like a silver box, maybe 8in wide by 8in long. I do know that the selector switch wires run from it, and other wires ( I assume ) power wires run to it. Thank you again.
First the blinking light means it has not engaged the front axle yet. When it stays on your in four wheel drive. You may have known that I just needed to say it though. You say it works sometime so we can take it that the problem is not in the mechanics of the unit. I'm thinking it a operator problem or maybe I should say a drivers misunderstanding of what happens when you put it in 4X4. Let me try to explain. The electric motor you replaced tries to engage gears that turn both the front and rear drive shafts. If your front wheels are turned or you are sitting still the gears may not mesh and the motor gets overloaded and what I think you hear clicking is a circuit breaker disconnecting the motor current cooling down and then completing the circuit again. Before you put it in 4X4 make sure your wheels are straight, put the trans in neutral then flip the switch. Back up a few feet and go forward again that will help the gears mesh and you should see the 4X4 stop flashing.
Q:Took it to Auto Zone and the OBD Trouble Code is P0402 - Exhaust Gas Recirculation flow Excessive Detected? anyone got an idea on a cure for the problem, that and I guess with the trouble code it won‘t read whatever they read to pass emissions - at leats that is how it was explained to me?
This code is usually caused by a bad DPFE sensor (delta pressure feedback egr sensor) this is a dealer item best to have the dealer check it first, won't take long 1.0 hr
Q:now why do you suppose car manufacturers such as toyota, nissan basically all auto manufacturers integrate such system.i mean come on its DAYTIME it not like its dark or anything.and the fact that it also draining the life of your battery its just my opinion i think its useless
drl just meant to help you see oncoming cars better. they actually do not drain the battery since they are only on while the car is running, in this time your alternator is charging. but still your right serve very little purpose
Q:What Should I Do?
That means there is a problem with air bag system on your car.If you want it fixed you need to have the dealer check it and fix it. Other wise your air bags may not work until fixed.md
Q:I had the engine exhaust light come on after a sensor was replaced in the gas tank for the fuel gage. I was told by the dealer that the light comes on when it senses a leak. However, after doing a smoke test they couldn‘t find one. They told me that they turned the light off and now I am worried that they did not put the gas tank back properly. The car was purchased approximately 2 months ago and I don‘t know if I should be worried or not. Any advice based on experience is greatly appreciated.
Sounds like the dealer did finish the job properly. However, to be sure, take the car to a second auto-workshop and have the exhausted system thoroughly inspected (Should be low cost). If you find any faults, take the car back to dealership and demand proper repair. Good luck.
Q:While driving, my airbag light flashes this sequence: solid light for about 5 secs then 6 flashes. Sometimes the battery lamp will flicker. Also th ABS lamp comes on and stays solid. Anyone have any idea what that code might be? Is my ABS just toast?
ABS is Anti-lock brakes, battery light is a sign the system isn't charging the battery. The ABS light will come on if the battery voltage isn't at least 10.5 volts. Your battery and/or alternator is bad. Start the car. remove the negative terminal. Turn on the headlights and A/C fan to high, then rev the engine. It should keep running. if not, alternator is bad. If it does, bad battery. If the battery is more than 4 years old, R2 it anyway. ADDED: You may have a sensor going bad. It is 13 years old. Try having the codes read at Autozone.
Q:Both having the same engine size (4Cyl) 2.5 and autotrans. difference between S and LS is the premium sound system, automatic roll up windows on both the driver and passenger side, auto lights, foglamps, and in some cases with Navigation system instead of 6CD changer BOSE. Any input will be appreciated. thank you
In theory yes, but it would be way more hassle than it's worth and cost a lot more than it's worth.
