- Q: I have a 99 F150 and my ABS light is on so I took it to an auto repair shop, and they told me that I needed a new ABS system, about $1500.00 but he also said that they have stopped making them, so he was going to call around junk yards and see if any of them carry them, $600.00 Problem is do I really need the ABS. - Well let me start with saying people drove for decades without ABS systems. They began being required on over the road semi trucks in th 1970s. And began coming as standard equipment on passenger cars in the 1990s. Obviously the National highway traffic safety admin, as well as automakers feel very strongly about them. It usually has no effect on your service brakes if there is a fault in the ABS system. And you probably notice no change in how the service brakes feel with the ABS light on. ABS can make a huge difference in the ability to control a stop in ice, water or sand. There is no worse feeling than sliding uncontrolled in a panic stop. Especially in the rain or snow. Your F150 would be prone to an controlled skid in a panic stop since there is very little weight over the rear tires. I would make every attempt I could to get it repaired

- It sounds like you may very well have had gotten bad gas. Water in gas will reek havoc on an engine and it's sensors. You probably have a car made after 1996, in which it has a OBD2 computer system. You computer will run tests everytime to turn the key on, and if a test fails it will turn the light on. This is what Technicians call a soft code. If the test passes the 2nd or 3rd time run the computer will clear it itself. If the test fails three times in a row, then the code is stored into hard memory in which is called hard code and must be cleared manually. If you light continues to come on, I would have it checked for a possible contaminated oxygen sensor or a clogged fuel injector!

- Are you talking about DRL (Daytime Running Light) system? If so a trip to the dealer and they can hook up to their scanner and re-program to turn the DRL feature on. The DRL can be turned on by hooking up the SCN tool and configuring DRL in the Smart Junction Box (SBJ). DRL are turned on by the duty cycle which gives a lower voltage to the bulb. The duty cycle is when a transistor is turned on and off very quickly to achieve a lower voltage (ie: 12v X 50% duty cycle = aprox 6v) In the Ford Manual, it reads: When the ignition switch is in the run position, the headlamps are not on (from the auto lighting system or manual control them the headlamp switch), the trans axle is not in park (P) (auto trans) or the parking brake applied (manual trans) the SJB provides a pulse width modulated voltage to the low beam headlamps. this illuminates the headlamps at a reduced intensity. In the pinpoint test, the manual asks Is the SBJ DRL configuration enabled? Set to enable to turn on the DRL. This should take no more than 15 minutes and no charge if you have a good relationship with your Ford Service Department.
