Q: 3.4 and with in 2 months the cat coverter was replaced twice. Then the o2 sen replaced then things fine for day then engine light was back on. took car back in the tested and keeps bringing back to cat converter. So what else can I be looking to check?: You dont make it come back. The check engine light comes on when a sensor notices a problem. If the problem is not there, the system will NOT triger a check engine light. Another words, if the light is out, let it be. When the light comes on again, you can trace the cause of the problem then.

Q: About three weeks ago my engine light came on in my car and I'd never had anything for wrong with it in the few years I had it. I took it to auto zone and they ran a test that came up saying that my gas cap was defective. It wasn't loose because it had be on both prior to and after filling up my car. They gave me a new gas cap and said to drive around for a while and the light would turn off on its own. Well it has been three weeks and my light is still on. What's wrong?: First off, never take your car to one of these fast code reading type places. They sell you things that you don't need because they lack the knowledge to fix them properly. If anything, just get the code from them and check it out for yourself. Or better yet take it to a qualified repair shop that has a good reputation for diagnostics. The code that the light was on for was probably an evap leak. Although a defective gas cap could be the culprit, it is very unlikely. That system has many hoses that run from the back of the car (at the tank) all the way to the engine. Also there are a few valves and solenoids that could be bad. What I'm saying is this specific problem has to go through a bunch of tests before anything can be condemned. So for AZ to read the code and just say you need a gas cap and the fact it was tight leads me to believe they just sold you something you most likely did not need. EDIT- Giving AZ the benifit of the doubt, lets say the gas cap was the problem. Driving the car will eventually turn the light off. Each code has a set number of pass tests that it has to go through before turning the light off. The evap system, the system involved in the gas cap, would take a long time to turn it off.

Q: I thought I knew everything about these cars and was home free. While driving, the battery light will come on for a few seconds/minute, a message will say CHECK CHARGING SYSTEM, than turn off again.However we replaced the battery and alternator a year or two ago, and got about 40k without any electrical problems. Otherwise, The car is not acting weird. But It almost has 190,000. Besides the common ABS problem, this is the only thing that is acting up with it. I am thinking maybe dirty or loose connections to the battery? Its been really rainy these past days. What Should I check? I would hate to get rid of this van.: 2001 Ford Windstar Alternator

Q: The TC warning light comes on during slow ( city) speeds on my 5.3L 2wd 2005 Tahoe LS but the TC light goes off at highway speeds. Does this point to a sensor leak? The brakes when applied at slow speeds do make some noise at times ( but not all the time) when the TC light is on.: J. D., To clarify, I am not an auto technician. In the owner's manual on page 3-68 it says, if the brake traction control system activates constantly or if the brakes have heated up due to high-speed breaking, a TRACTION SYS LIMITED may appear. Per the manual, this is normal and the message should only display briefly. There is also more detailed information beginning on page 4-9 through 4-13. However this light could still indicate it needs to be serviced. If you feel unsafe, I would take it a Chevrolet Certified Technician. Q: I replaced my steering wheel on an olds intrigue, the manufactures steps for disconnecting the srs system were followed. But the air bag light is now on and I dont want to pay the dealer to do the diagnostic. Everything is hooked back up properly and auto zone and other places i have tried dont have diagnostic testers with srs capability. Thanks in advance for any help!: Go to Harbor Freight and pay $0.99 for a roll of black electrical tape. Tear off a small piece and put it over the airbag light. Problem solved!

Q: 2003 Toyota Avalon XLS.The battery was installed in Aug 2013 (before I owned the car) according to the label on it. The battery itself and the connections look good with no rust on the terminals or the wire, however, I did clip and put a new, better end on the negative cause it was slightly questionable. (Still the lights flickered after that). Went to Advance Auto and had them run a battery/charge test. Alternator issue? I‘m about to install a 300w amp too.Hmmm. If its the alternator I‘ll obviously just replace it but would like to leave that as a last resort.: Measure between the negative battery post and the chassis. I bet you have a missing engine to chassis ground. It could also be a bad alternator. They often test good because they get intermittent. Battery and alternator tests in shops are overrated.

Q: I checked the manual and that's what it says, it was hard for me to understand exactly what the problem is. I filled my gas tank up to over 1/2 a tank and it's good,all the oil levels are fine...I did drive on a dirt road a day before I saw this light pop up. How can I take this light off if everything seems to be fine?: You need to have the code read with a scan tool to find the exact problem your car is having, there are different sensors for the emissions system. You might just have a bad oxygen sensor.

Q: i just purchased and within an hour needed gas and the check engine light came on , we disconected neg battery cable and it went off till got low on gas again it runs good but just would like it off to give me peace of mind thanks for any help: If you are low on gas you are inviting problems for the fuel injection system so I cannot understand why you would not want the light to come on?

Q: I have a 1995 Chevrolet c1500 with the 5.7L engine. Today I started my truck, with no problems ran perfectly. Drove to the gas station, got gas, then restarted my truck and all of the sudden it was at a higher idle around 1100 rpms, the check engine light came on and when I shifted to drive, the tires squealed a little. When driving I noticed it was hesitating to shift and shifted kind of roughly when it did finally shift. I have kept up with maintenance and take the best possible care of it. Like I said it just randomly started acting up when i restarted it after about 5 minutes.
