Q: My ets light and check engine light are on, on a 1999 chevy cavalier. My car also shifts hard, I have had someone tell me that it could be the tps sensor. Does anyone know if this is the case ??? Thank you: You might have multiple problems. A bad TPS could indeed cause the hard shifting. What's happened is the computer has gone into a default mode to control transmission shifts. If the TPS is bad, the computer doesn't know if you're pressing lightly on the accellerator or flooring it - so it makes sure there's no damage to the transmission clutches by forcing hard shifts at set RPMs. The ETS computer *could* need a TPS signal to work correctly. There are test procedures for the TPS using a volt-ohmmeter. You could also try removing one of the battery cables for a few minutes to reset the computer, but if it is the TPS the problem wll come back. Best solution is to see what scan codes show up and go from there. edit. I see that Chevrolet chose a very poor place to install the ECU - in front of the right front wheel where water and salt can spray on it. Disconnect the battery, remove the connector and see if there's any green corrosion on the wires and/or connector. Clean it up with a wire brush and WD-40, repair any broken/corroded wires.

Q: ok so recently my car will not hold a charge. i have to jump start it every morning before work. they tested it at auto zone and said the battery tested ok and the alternator was over charging (140 i think amps?) but after completely replacing the alternator its still doing it. its fine if im driving but when i hit my brakes or turn on my turn signal it drains the battery really fast and i have to floor it to charge back up. my bright light completely kill the car as soon as i hit the switch. and my dome lights keep staying oni cant get them offalso when i hit my turn signal all the lights in the car flash with them. today we found a slice in the battery cable. it was pretty bad but we fixed it as best as we could and taped it tightly. any suggestions as to what this could be? i deliver pizzas and need a decent running car. its a 1996 pontiac bonneville seit has the 3800 if that matters. i wasted money on the alternator so i dont want to buy a new bat unless i know thats it: The boys on Car Talk have the old saying, It's the cheap man who pays the most for auto repairs. My suggestion would be to take it to a reputable shop and have the entire charging system checked. By the way, you might want to toss the batt. cable. The damage you observed was just the tip of the iceberg. Corrosion is always worse inside the cable. How old is this batt? If older than 4-5 yrs, you probably need to replace that also. And lastly, make sure they check the voltage regulator. Good luck

Q: Code PO 0455 showed up. I take to dealer and they made me wait 2 days before bring it in. Took it in and engine light was still on. They called me and told me engine light was not on when they got ready to check it and the computer did not even store record of this code. This is under warranty and I justquestion what is going on here. And yes its possible for your gas cap to give you a P0455 code but so are other things such as emmision hoses with cracks/splits. Your vehicle goes through system checks all the time when it fails a check, your check engine light comes on, until it is either cleared by a scan tool or the system has 3 suscessful run cycles it will turn the light back out as it thinks the system is ok.
