Q: The car is either a 2005 or 2006 and runs pretty great except the check engine light tends to come on and stay on and sometimes when the check engine light is on the car will slightly shake in sort of a jerk motion then it will stop immediately. I do notice this happens when the car has not been driven in a few days. We have taken the car to auto mechanics and when they run the code they say it could be a number of things but never give a resolution to the problem. Could it be that my oil is old?: On cars today, there is a service engine maintenance light, as well as a malfunction indicator check engine light. If you haven't gotten scheduled, regular maintenance on your car and a technician hasn't reset the maintenance light, it would have come on. This is normal. If it is the check engine light, you should have your stored code checked at a dealer or a local parts store. If you haven't changed your oil for 6k miles/9 months, then the chances of the vehicle's OBD2 (on-board diagnostics) system indicating a failure via the check engine light is slim to none. First, unless your drive trips consist mainly of short ones that lead to heavy oil dilution (condensation, unburned fuel) due to low oil temperatures, 6k miles is for many cars, unnecessarily EARLY to change the oil. If you look at your owners manual, it will probably recommend at least 6k miles for normal driving. Oil change companies recommend 3k miles primarily to get business, based on severe (frequent short trip) driving style. If your engine uses oil to actuate solenoids in the oil circuit, and you have heavily diluted oil, the OBD2 system could potentially detect a slow response in the system. The best way to find out is to take your car to a dealer or local auto parts shop to have the stored code checked.

Q: I just got a piece of **** car, and whenever i brake, or when i turn the left side blinker on, the taillight dims instead of getting brighter. Also, the left turn signal blinks slower than the right turn signal. Even on the dash, the little arrow blinks slower than on the right. I compared the actual bulb with the other, and its dimmer when lit. I JUST bought new bulbs twenty minutes ago, even the old bulbs did this. So i don‘t know if i have a short in the wire or what, i already looked back by the light and all the wires are old, but look fine. I don‘t know if somewhere inside the car frame something happened or up where they go to the battery, but the whole left side lighting system is screwed up. Any help before i call the auto shop?: If there was a short, it would blink faster because of more current passing through the flasher relay. Sounds like you have corrosion somewhere in the system, causing increased resistance. No choice but to start at the bulbs, and grounds, and clean every connection along the way.

Q: I would like to find a remote control that goes on my Key chain. So I can turn my accent lights on and off from a distance like 30' or so. kinda like wireless locks on most doors now days? also do they make a modulator for these kind of lights that will make the lights flash in a sequence? if so where can I get them?: . I think it might be illegal to tamper with your lights, but maybe that's only in Canada. But I imagine any shop that can install a car alarm could help you. ...for maybe $400. NAPA or some auto parts store might have some module you can just solder in but it's unlikely.

Q: driving to work check engine light came on not driving any diffrent: Before you do anything, change the gas cap. Computerized systems depend upon a load of input sources, one of which is fuel system pressure. Funny thing is that a bad gas cap seal will never show up on an analysis but is the problem 60% of the time. Your car is old enough to have a bad gasket/seal. Disconnect battery negative post for 30 minutes, then reconnect. If light comes on again, go to local auto parts store and have them read the code. They'll tell you what's wrong for nothing. If you take it to the dealer straight away, they'll charge at least $200 (just to analyze), keep your car for awhile, replace some parts and then get it back to you; maybe fixed, maybe not. I always change the gas cap first (a non-locking one - lockers don't seal well)

Q: I purchased the car in March and it runs fine. In the past month I have noticed that occasionally the battery light comes on. It does not matter whether the lights or a/c are on or off. I tried reving the engine to see if that would turn it off and that does not seem to make a difference. After a minute or two it goes off and may not do it again for a week. The meter on the dash shows that the system is charging. I do not know the age of the battery as it is not marked, but the terminals are tight and do not have corrosion.: Hi Craig. let me start by telling you you have done well to describe the issue. as I suspect you know the charge light indicates that the alternator isnt charging the system. the battery light is telling you that you are bellow 12 volts in the system. at roughly 11 volts the system wont opporate as it is designed to cut out to save the electronics system. the point that the lamp goes on and off may be trying to tell you the alternator is not putting out the roughly 14 volts it must do. some may ask why does an alternator put out more than the 12 volts a battery system is stated at? the reason is compairable to drinking from a glass. if a glass is to remain at the top of the glass more must be added if the glass is being shared by your son or daughter (as is common) even more must be added to keep it full. so the more things using the system the more must be supplied. modern cars are loaded witth electrical parts just to drive using no creature comforts. so the odds are strong that A- there is an issue in the charging system B- that its intermitent C- that I need to help LOL, you need a volt meter and a test light. take a non running volt reading at the battery expect 12.5 aprx. now do the same test but apply the ground to several locations (frame, block etc) if the change is more than a volt even if closer to 1/2 volt it may and likely does tell you the battery isnt grounding to the block or frame that well. special note, examine the battery cables very closely for the cable bulging behind the clamps, common top post battery issue and is a system killer! the sound getting louder when A/C is on is common but may indicate the belt is not tight enough and that the automatic tensioner is possible weak. change the belt 1st and see that the sound is gone if not exect a pully issue likely the tensioner.
