A microscopically rough surface will appear dark next to a polished surface due to light scattering. I will agree with Ling in principle, but not on details. EDS detection limits on homogeneous samples can be better than 0.1%, although not so good for elements at the light end of the detection range. Current detectors can detect chlorine (a common culprit for aluminum discoloration) at about 0.1%. Your problem with detection and one that Ling has addressed previously may be that a thin film of contamination would not be easily detected by EDS. As Ling suggests, SIMS is a good technique for detecting thin films and low concentrations. The problem with SIMS in this case may be that the detection limits are too good and the technique cannot be quantified. SIMS would detect 2 ppm of chloride and you couldn't tell for sure whether it was 2 ppm, which is probably not an issue here, or 2000 ppm, which would be significant. I would suggest x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ESCA or XPS) as an alternative for further study. The technique will analyze thin films (20 A) and detection limits are good enough (about 0.1%). - Rust refers to the oxidation of iron, so no it doesn't rust. Aluminium oxidates rapidly which usually increases its corrosion resistance. 6061 is a pretty standard aluminium alloy, which shouldn't corrode under normal circumstances. Certainly not in a well designed and maintained bicycle. Things that could decrease the corrosion resistance of your aluminium bike include: - contact with other metals that have a higher valence (+ contact with water). Could be caused by a poorly designed bike, but not very likely. - contact with chemicals/salts/alkalis - narrow spots (where water could be trapped) caused by poor design, production faults or a damaged surface. Corrosion in your swimming pool could be caused by the chemicals you use to kill the bacteria in the pool. How do you know it is the same material though?

- No worse than vinyl. The advantage vinyl has over aluminum is its resistance to denting. Siding is a good finish, but if you've already got a brick exterior, you're wasting the hard hours the masons put in to make it. If the brick has deteriorated or is horribly scarred, like having survived a hurricane or tornado, then sure, siding will spiff it up cosmetically as well as adding insulation value. That said, I'd rather take a house with aluminum siding over wood any day...and vinyl over that. If you get the siding in the color you want, as it's the entire thickness of the vinyl, powerwashing the outside won't take the color off as it could with painted wood or (though less likely) the finish on the aluminum...unless you *like* painting :)
