Q: what is NPSH for the water pump. Can you anyone explain in details? How can it calculate?
NPSH stands for Net Positive Suction Head. It usually refers to the amount of pressure needed at the inlet of the pump for the pump to work properly. If there is insufficient pressure pushing the fluid into the pump, and the pressure at the inlet is lower than the NPSH requirement, then the pressure will be so low in the sucking center of the pump that the fluid will boil (this is called cavitation). It usually makes a racket, reduces pump performance, and erodes away the pump. To make sure this doesn't happen you have to have enough head (as in some level in the tank feeding the pump) and low pressure drop on the way to the pump (meaning big enough lines, no obstructions, and not too many bends). Some pumps are designed for very low npsh requirements. These pumps can suck water from some depth without cavitating. No pump can suck room temperature water from fore than about 25 feet below the pump, because the vacuum needed to lift the water 25 feet or so is close to the vacuum needed to boil water at room temperature. You cannot easily calculate the npsh a pump needs. This is a function of the design and geometry of the pump. You can calculate the delivered npsh by figuring the pressure of the liquid in the feed tank (don't forget atmospheric pressure) and subtracting the pressure loss due to friction in the piping between feed tank and pump. This loss will be a function of flow rate. Faster flow, more frictional pressure loss.
Q: How can we calculate the maximum pump pressure for chilled water system for a 20 story building
the question is not stated in such a way that a response is merited. What, exactly, is the problem? Minimum pressure might be enough to push a water column 20 stories... max pressure? how about 726 or a million psi?
Q: As I wrote last night, I have a Isuzu Rodeo V6 3.2L 4X4. I guess I misunderstood my husband. I talked to him this morning and he said that it did overheat but the gauges on the inside of the car wasn't showing that it was overheating. It wasn't spewing coolant but the coolant that was just filled up a couple of weeks ago is empty. Does anyone know what the problem is?
please do not drive this. it seems you have two problems: your gauge and/or sending unit is not working . and now that you have developed a leak you are overheating with no indication. Please you will severely damage your engine dont drive but if you must install a generic mechanical temerature sensor so you may at least monitor the temperatur. it shouldnt cost more than 20 bucks. and almost anyone that knows about cars can install in 10 min
Q: How hard is it change a 1993 subaru imprezza water pump
hi Silicone wont do it, keep in mind the rad cap says 15lb. On my truck there's a center gasket and it leaked out the backside. So it probable has to return out. or possibly a bolt got here out?
Q: I have a Honda 20003 bf15 d short shaft Ineed to change the water pump I have removed the 5 bolts that hold the lower unit it on but the shifter is steal hooked up how doI unhook that?
Please get the workshop manual. From an imperfect memory it should be in forward gear to expose a link - but I could be confusing it with other brands. This brand has a known issue with the water pump if ever run dry as both the impellor and the housing can be damaged instantly. The pump should always be replaced as a full assembly, housing, seals and impellor, as detritus can easily block water galleries and that requires extensive work to remediate. The thermostat should be checked and replaced at the same time. Worn and damaged impellor material can easily end up through the block, head, thermostat etc. and that must be checked for as well. The lower cylinder can be down on compression caused by local overheating due to this and mud, sand and corrosion reducing water flow. An engine that very much must be flushed and looked after after all use - that includes all the larger models with this brand. They are quite a good engine, but seem very heavy for the output to me - particularly compared to lifting a two stroke on and off....
Q: Hi, I'm looking for an affordable pump that can be used to circulate heated water (60 C) through a 12pipe with a diameter about the size of a pencil. Is there a pump out there to match this application? I've come across some small fountain pumps, but they need to be submerged in the 60 C water bath and I'm not sure about the temperature tolerances of it. The model I'm currently looking at is a quot;TotalPond130gph fountain pump model. Thanks
You could try that pump but I don't think you get enough pressure. They can pump quite a bit of volume but don't have any pressure. It might be able to pump 130gph but check and see at what head. The head is what it can pump vertically. Could be 130gph at 3ft head but give it a go, might work just the way you want it to. An inline pump probably better to set up than a submerged one.
Q: Water pump for 98 Venture?
To replace the water pump on the 3.4L Venture calls for 1.3 hours labor (about $130) and the pump is about $30 and it is a good idea to replace the thermostat and flush the cooling system to get maximum life out of the pump and your cooling system about $100 so you would be looking at about $350
Q: I have a 1997 ford ranger, during last week i noticed that the temperature started to go up, i noticed that the coolant recovery tank was empty so i added coolant and it fixed the problem, but a day later i noticed that the tank was empty again since it started to overheat again. This time i let the engine cool off and checked the radiator water levels and noticed it was dry with no water, so i added water and noticed that i was leaking from what it seems the water pump (im guessing its the water pump because is behind the engine fan, behind the belts, its hard to see), Does anyone have a possible explanation or suggestion of what i should do? Thank you i would really appreciate it.
it sounds to me like the weep hole on the bottom of the water pump is leaking. This is what it is supposed to do when the water pump bearing gets some play. You should be able to look from under the engine and see the bottom of the water pump, it will probably look all clean as water has been running out of it. This is how you tell your water pump needs to be replaced. Generally speaking it is best to buy a NEW WATER PUMP, NOT A REMANUFACTURED OR REBUILT. The reason for this is a new water pump will last a lifetime of a vehicle generally speaking, so you only want to do this once because its a pain in the butt. and this is the time to inspect heater hoses, radiator hoses and chang the thermostat . This should solve any issues with the pump leaking, so get the front end of the truck safely up in the air, and make sure there is not a hose leaking or something simple, A shop would do a pressure test of the system and this would show them where your leak is. As a temporary measure you can leave the radiator cap loose so pressure does not build up this will keep the fluid in the vehicle, and not blow it all out the weep hole, just don't leave the cap so loose it blows off on the road somewhere, as long as water stays in, and the radiator is full you can use it.
Q: I have a fairly new jetted tub. I stupidly used bubble bath 2 days before and have since read that it is not good, but just because of the amount of bubbles, not that it will actually harm the system. The electrical circuit is not tripped. I hear this clicking but the pump doesn't turn on. Any ideas? Do I need a new pump?
Also may want to check inside the access door underneath some have a cord plugged into a GFI receptacle that may be tripped. May want to check it just in case.
Q: I have coolant leaking out and i'm pretty sure now that it is the water pump. Question can water pumps leak even if the cars not running?Like a steady drip every two seconds? Forming a decent puddle after awhile, but when running the pump is'nt making any abnormal noises is that normal? Is there other clues to positively know the pump is bad? I cant believe how hard a job it looks like it would be to replace it there is no room! Anybody with some helpful how to's? how about an estimate on how much a shop would charge to do it?
A repair shop will charge about $200 to fix that problem. If you have a jack and a jack stand the lack of room wont be much of a problem anymore. It only a matter of getting the belt covers and timing covers off, and the water pump pully off. The pully can be tricky. since It is a car '92 and younger you may have a problem with a gear slipping and the motor needing timed. If your paticular car needs timed by the belts and pullys, then no problem line up the notches in the gears as they go. But if the timing is off by the valves, Then your in for a long night of work and slight frustration. If you dont really know what you are doing at all, Then don't bother with it, leave it up to the pros, so that your car actually runs when the pump is put in. It took me 8 hours to fix one in a '99 honda Civic
