Q:how does a generator work powerlessly. i mean like if there is a black out people cna generate energy from like a generator. well then how come a generator work without the help of anything? (NOT TALKInG About the hydropower generator, the one that spins.
Generators *always* take some kind of mechanical energy to operate. In the case of a power blackout, backup generators use large diesel engines rated for hundreds of thousands of Horsepower, to run the electrical backup generators. Those diesel engines (obviously) run on diesel fuel so, there is your 'anything'. .
Q:I know about solar panels and wind turbines but either will have to be above ground. Petrol or diesel generators are to loud and fuel isn't cheap these days.
Nuclear reactor power plant. Stationary exercycles. Water wheel in underground river. Steam boiler fired by coal or natural gas. Fuel cell.
Q:I was wondering if you guys know where to find an electrical generator that does not come with an engine. For example, I have found diesal generators that use diesal fuel to create current. I need something that can create current, but doesn't come with any mechanical input.I basically need an alternator that can produce power on the 30 kilowatt level.
You need 3 things to create electrical current. 1. An electrical conductor - usually copper wire 2. A magnetic field - could be from permanent magnets or electromagnets or a combination of both 3 Relative motion between the conductor and the magnetic field. If you are not using mechanical input (like an engine or turbine) to create physical motion, you will need to find a way to put the magnetic field in motion.
Q:Hi, i have a peugeot diesel conected to an 8kw alternator via a lay shaft engine 2275rpm alt 1500rpm at 2250rpm engine produces max torque 70lb ft, alt should only need 33lb ft. under heavy load engine allmost stalls. I think i need avr control? Can you help with advice and componants? Many thanks Andre
The alt is what RPM you will set the engine atMost 120-240 volt are 50 HRX and run at 1800or 3600 so if it's the 3600 back end your using the wrong engineUnless you use a pulley and belt to get the correct RPMMY 8K Diesel marine ONAN direct drive 3cyc runs at 1800 Rpm If your over loading the genset than no engine will workwhat is the load your pulling as 8K is 80 amps Max single 240V or 40 amp double 120V
Q:i want to see the model of this perkins generating set
are you sure its a perkins? It may be a Yanmar?
Q:I have been trying to research the specifics of utilidor functionality for nearly two weeks and have come up with hardly any information. What I'm wanting to know is, at certain access points of utilidors in artic areas, is there something above ground that powers the tunneling below like possibly a transformer or a generator? I know it seems unfeasible to have either one out in the open to be exposed to the elements but I still want to know. And also even if this isn't the case now, was it so when the tunnel systems were first made?
Utilidors is an acronym for Utility Corridors. This may be a tunnel system that contains all the necessary utilities to support a community, business of some other area needing electric, gas, water, sewer, communications, etc. These are found both above and below ground level depending on environmental concerns, costs, etc. The generators and transformers used to supply various points along the corridor and may be located above or below ground depending on design. A UG designed transformer for instance could be used below ground. A generator needs to be driven by something, gas engine, turbine, diesel engine, etc. these may be located below ground but it will have to have an external exhaust port somewhere. Hope this helps, Newton1Law
Q:Hello,I'm doing a research project that requires me to report on five ethical missteps made by engineers/staff at the Fukushima plant that caused the disaster. I'm having trouble with this research because most of the information i'm finding centers around the earthquake and subsequent tsunami that caused so much damage. Can anyone point me toward any human errors that centered around poor ethical judgement?
If you just google human error fukushima you're going to get (a) a few articles from the summer of 2011; (b) a rash of articles from July, 2012; (c) a rash of articles from Oct-Nov, 2013; and (d) a rash of articles from last week (Feb 2014). Whether all will cite ethical missteps is unknown to me.
Q:husband is looking for something that he can use for power that is more economical. (no natural gas lines)
Do you really mean as electric source and not as emergency back-up? Diesel would probably be the best choice for fuel economy/reliability. (Since it's not for roadway use, you can probably arrange to buy it untaxed.) For back-up power, you'd have to have a lot of long outages to recover the extra cost of the diesel engine set. For 'Prime power' - 24/7 , you're not going to beat electric utility energy rates even with diesel, as the required size generator for your peak loads will be idling most of the time. (Engine/generators are very fuel-inefficient at low loadings. - With a water-cooled unit, you can capture waste engine heat for house heat in winter though.) If by total electric' you mean heating as well, long term, you'd probably save on fuel if you had a smaller 'back-up' unit to carry the smaller home load when the heating system isn't required.
Q:Generators used for electricity
Considering: 746 Watts/HorsePower typical small diesel gets 1 HorsePower*hr/0.4 pounds of fuel 6.8 pounds diesel/gal gal/3.75 liter 75% typical efficiency, Multiply together: 746W/HP * HP*hr/0.4lb * 6.8 lb/gal * gal/3.75liter * 75% 2540 W-hr/liter. This is used to estimate fuel consuption. First, pick a generator size, for example, a 10 kW generator. Divide this power by 2540. So, a 10 kW generator should need 10,000/2540 4 liters per hour. Now, multiply by the number of hours per day that you run it to determine fuel consumption per day. For 6 hrs per day, 4 * 6 24 liters needed. Actual consumption varies for different machines, environmental conditions, fuel composition, loads, etc, but this should be a realistic estimate.
Q:how exactly to fossil fuel power plants work?
the short answer is they use the fuel to heat water and create steam and use the steam in a turbine to create electricity
