- The carpet you buy should not be a real non slip mat. Really effective anti-skid carpet shop on the ground is not going to type, and I guess you buy the kind of black bottom a little, and that does not have any anti slip effect!

- Q: OK, my pet pooped on the carpet, didn't notice it for awhile. It dried, I picked it up, vacuumed the carpet as well as I could, sprinkled a little (not too much) baking soda into the carpet and rubbed in it. Then I put diluted vinegar (half and half with water) in a container and soaked a paper towel, wrung it out and scrubbed the carpet with it. - Allowing the poop to dry is the correct thing to do. If you seriously try and clean damp/moist poop from the carpet, there is a chance you will rub it in, making the removal of it more difficult. White vinegar is a mild acid and will not harm the carpet, many people will use it to blot out coffee stains from the carpet. Baking soda will not harm the carpet either, it will however, be a little hard to vacuum back out with out a beater bar on the vacuum. You did ok, if you ever have serious diarrhea on the carpet from the pet, leave it alone and leave the home, do not rub it in, and call a pro.
- Q: I have carpeting in a room where I would like to install built-in bookshelves. How should I secure them to the floor? Do I need to remove the carpeting or can I set them on top?
- I would really remove the carpet underneath them, put down a tack strip and re-kick the carpet to it and end it with a tidy roll. The major problem with putting them on top of the carpet is leveling. I have some built-ins in my office and library both on top of carpet. As the carpet and padding compresses, it changes the leveling. Also, there is a tack strip along the baseboards which causes the units to pitch forward because it doesn't compress. If I had to do it over, I would strip out the carpet underneath because I'm constantly checking the level as the house settles, too.

Would dyeing it affect it?
- Whether dyeing would work depends on what fibre it's made of. If it's wool or cotton, it would dye quite well with ordinary dyes, though it might present a few difficulties since dyes usually call for being heated, and a lot of rinsing after. If it's a synthetic fibre, which it very likely is, it might not dye at all because synthetics don't absorb dye very well, if at all. If they do, they usually require processes that would be very difficult to achieve with a rug, such as heating the dye bath with the item in it. All in all, it's probably not worth even trying. Find a cheap black rug to buy.

For room I, the carpet size, without adding any buffer space for edge trimming, is 12' * 29'2quot; = 356 sq ft. For room II, the carpet size, without adding any buffer space for edge trimming, is 12' * 12'10quot; = 154 sq ft. The room II closet is 12 * 2'4'' = 28 sq ft. How many add'l sq ft do I need to add to allow buffer for trimming in each room? ThanksSM
- It depends on which wall the closet is on as far as the run if it needs a seam or not. Basically for the 2 rooms you need approx 504 sf (12 x 42) plus the closet which will be 12 x 2.5 or 30 sf. This is approx, but you can't get carpet that exact simply because it comes in 12' width's. So you are looking at 534 or 535 sf. As the guy says below, you can figure on about a 5% waste factor.
