- Cassy, if you want new carpet then you will have to go to a carpet store. Some of the larger companies have end of line run out sales for carpets that they are replacing with a new pattern or colour so it's always worth asking, you might get last years carpet at a bargain. You could also look at some auction houses for carpet bargains. If you are okay with second hand carpet then have a look at some of the trader newspapers, we have trading post here in Melbourne and they are online too, Australia wide I think on the net. Some people will sell their old carpet when replacing it so check around. Also, you could contact some carpet installers because they are always ripping out old carpet when laying down new stuff. Ask them what they do with the carpet they are getting rid of. They might onsell it somewhere if it's in good shape. You can always jump on line and google 'second hand carpet'. I got a few hits when I did this so you might find something in your area.

- what carpet or flooring you want and are satisfied with your plan you can now start to measure the rooms etc. When measuring it is very important to measure the widest point so make sure you measure into doorways as this is what most people over look. Just take your time to look in the room and make sure you have accounted for all the areas in the room. Most carpet is 4 or 5 meters in width so take this into account ie.where joins will go if required or how much waste will there be to do other areas. when measuring stairs just measure the width and allow approx 1.5 foot per stair in length. Draw arrows on your plans to which way the carpet will run this will make it easier when working out what size carpet you will need. Carpet will usually come in 12 and 15 foot wide rolls, so depending if the one you pick come in both or just 12 wide will determine exactly how much you need.

- Hey minstine, I am a flooring associate from The Home Depot and selling rugs is part of my job, but not in this answer. If you're referring to to certain area rugs that are say oriental, large, or just have a lot of patterns in them, they can be pretty steep sometimes in price. The reasons vary a lot, but lets say you pick out a nice Persian rug thats 5' x 8', and you saw an almost similar one at another store, heck even almost exact. Upon actually seeing it or having a trained salesperson there, you can see it is way more money. If you actually feel the materials, colors, and patterns in them, you can see why the better time and features are put into the more expensive rug. Unless you are really actually there and feeling the rug, its hard to spend a lot of money on another rug thats cheaper you see online. Here is a list of reasons why rugs seem to be so darn pricey sometimes 1. Thread counts in the rug (1 million per sq. foot or higher means $$) 2. Type of material (wool are more expensive than say nylons) 3. Who made it (man-made is more expensive than a loom) 4. How and where it was shipped (imported or made locally) There are other factors as well, but those are the big ones I tell my customers about when they are shopping around for rugs. - Without doubt it must be shampooed first as K M has already said. The reason is also the same, that carpets do in fact lose their shape due to shrinking , etc and then when you get it stretched, the stretcher will get it into a perfect rectangle.

- Through Home Depo I got mixed rating carpet for 1200 sq ft. In my office and bedroom i got non matting, heavy traffic, about $2.50 q ft. In my guest room and rental room i got a lower grade but with scotch guard for about 1.50 q ft. With installation it was roughly $2000.00. I would call around, sometimes companies have discounts or sales, half off.

- For spot cleaning I use spray Resolve. It works great! I spray it on the stains and rub it with a dry rag and the stain is gone! When I shampoo my house rugs I use Bissell Rug Cleaner in my Rug Shampoo Machine. I also use this Bissell Rug Cleaner on my car matts. I just mix it with water and I use a scrub brush~~in my deep sink, NOT MY CAR, lol You can do it in your bathtub too, I would guess.
