- Q:What is the effect of the carpet?
- Good-looking, thermal insulation.
- Q:Are rugs supposed to more or less engulf a room and be under the legs of your furniture (in our case that would be the 8X10), or are they used more as accents rugs in front of couches and chairs, not actually touching the furniture but filling the empty space....hence the 5X8?Or are there no rules and anything goes in the world of rugs? Also, any suggestions for selecting a pattern are welcome. Our chairs are neutral, but the couch has a strong leaf with some floral pattern to it, and in addition to struggling with size and colors to match it, we're also having problems with pattern on pattern. I suppose the safest thing to do would be just to forget rugs, since we seem to be challenged in this area - but the floor desperately needs something and the room needs a punch of color to balance it. Thanks for your help!
- All comes down to what furniture you have. From that you figure out the rugs.
- Q:When I vacuum area rugs the vacuum makes an unbearably loud noise. I assume the suction from the vacuum is actually sucking up the rug itself. What can be done about this? The noise is absolutely horrific and it doesn't pick up any dirt while it is happening.
- if it has a beater bar it is probably getting stuck the carpet is wrapping itself around it take the carpets outside and beat them unless you have another vac. or setting where the bar isnt going around or use the hose part if there is one.
- Q:How do you get a vomit smell out of carpet? Is there something around the house I can use or is there a certain product needed? What would work best?No jokes please! Thanks!
- Once you've cleaned as well as you can, spray the spot with Lysol..
- Q:I am trying to find a practical solution to carpeting my basement with pets and kids in the house. I was looking at carpet tile because I can just replace a worn or stained piece. Has anyone here used carpet tile? What brand did you buy and how did it hold up? Can this be easily installed or do I need a pro? Any tips?
- Yes, we had a couple small areas that needed carpet so we used that. Ours had rubber backs so we didn't even glue it down. Now they say you have to do some fancy measuring and start in the middle of the floor. I have yet to find a square floor in any house or basement so....that's a bit silly. The reason they tell you to do that tho, is so you can make cuts at the walls instead of the middle. When you buy them there will be instructions and the seller will help. Sorry square means basically this. Measure 2 ft on a corner wall and 3 ft on the adjoining wall, between the two marks measure and it should be 5 ft. (this will be a triangle) My basement was off 2 1/2 inches. This just means you'll have some funky cuts at the end so put them where they won't be seen.
- Q:In the September catalog of Urban Outfitters they had photos of their room decor, furniture, etc. On the walls (they don't sell them the store) were these cool flowery rugs.
- Hi there, I'm glad you asked. The rug in that photo is great. Some places might charge a lot of money for something like that, but I run an online website that sells mostly furniture, you know, coffee tables, end tables, etc. We do have a fairly good selection of rugs though and I'm looking at them now and we have a few that look just like that. Once you pick out your favorite, you can just order it online. No need to go to the store! I'm sure you'll love our prices too!
- Q:How Do I Install Carpet, I just installed the wood tacking boards and new foam padding. and now am lost as what to do next.
- If you want it done properly you should hire someone to do it because they do have the right tools for the job. If you just want to fly at it and try on your own, then there are a few things you should probably know. Make sure you've installed the wood tacking boards correctly as they will be of no use to you if you put them in the wrong direction I'm sure. when you install your carpet make sure that there is a little space between the edge of your carpet and the wall (you can trim later) because over time your carpet is going to stretch and you'll get ripples in it if it's jammed right against the wall. The space will be covered by base boards anyway. If you don't have any seams to worry about, that's better. If you do you may have to contact someone who knows what they are doing. There is like a sticky/glue tape that will go on the underside of the carpet to join them together and then you have to use a hot iron in order to activate the glue...I wouldn't recommend trying this on your own. Think of it this way...worst case scenario is that you install it and have to later get someone to come in and do it correctly. I'm sure it will look great and kudos to you for attempting your own renovations. It's apparent that you looked into how to lay carpet as most people have no idea about the wooden strips you use to keep the carpet in place....or they will skip the underlay and just throw new carpet on top of old. --- Oh and by the way there is a special tool used to stretch your carpet ...I imagine it's called a carpet stretcher lol, but I'm not sure and that too looks like a job for professionals. When my mom installed her bedroom carpet she did so without the tools, and it turned out perfect, not a single flaw.

- Q:My carpet in my living room has become stiff. I regularly shampoo it and it is rinsed thoroughly. Any suggestions as to how to make it soft again?
- I agree with the too much soap in the past theory. The residual soap then is aerosolized when next you shampoo the rug and then you breathe a lot of airborne mold and junk. Use the bare minimum of chemicals and soap when you shampoo a rug. Vacumn a lot. I am not sure how to make it soft again but I wanted to let you know the health risks associated with shampooing a rug. I have never tried it but maybe you could water down some fabric softener and spray it lightly on...let dry...try it on a small patch of carpet. I would use fabric softener with no added perfume. Good luck.
- Q:hi guys. so i have a brand new rug i put in the living room. but sadly.. i think it must be the new thread smell.. or the smell of what it was wrapped in.. because it smells quite stale.. and is giving me a headache. this is my first apartment. and i dont have experience cleaning rugs.. can someone explain a good way to get rid of the smell.. astringents to buy.. or something to kind of wash the rug without staining or ruining it.. i can do it by hand.. i just dont know the correct approach.ps. i have a rite aid next door. so if i should get something there to clean it.. please let me know!also, whats a good cleaner to buy for a toilet bowl? i need some good advice thank u!
- Is this the same rug I just answered about? I didn't know it was brand new! I assumed it was just old and funky. Try Carpet Fresh or any sprinkley carpet freshener. If it is really giving you a headache it is most likely just new fiber smell. Kinda like new car smell but different materials. In which case it will fade soon enough. but if it is really making your head hurt, take it outside and lay it out in the sun for a day or two. The ultra violet rays should cook off that new fiber smell a bit.
