- Washing those rugs in the washing machine is fine, I do mine every other week. Just throw it in separate from anything else and hang it to dry. Oh yeah and do it in cold water with NO bleach! Bleach and/or the dryer will cause the rubber backing to break down and start coming off.

If broken fibers, could be moth damage or other insects living in the wool. Vacuum daily. Have the rug cleaned especially it has had food, animal products, or a lot of foot traffic across it.
