- Q: I have a pontiac grand am 1996 v6 with a 3.1L 3100 SFI engine. I have a coolant leak and I think it's coming from the water pump. When the car is cool and then turned on, about 4 to 9 minutes into warming up, coolant is hitting a belt and spraying out of the car's front end. When this is happening I see that there is coolant dripping off of the waterpump housing. The coolant started to spray everywhere about 15 seconds before the radiator fan kicked in. Why would this happen when first warming up only? Can a defective thermostat cause this to happen?
- Understand what they do...thermostat is like a door inside the hose-either it is open or closed. Waterpump gasket is just a special paper that is between the pump and the engine block. The waterpump rotates so a shaft sticks out holding a pulley. Around that shaft has to be a material that does not wear very fast but allows shaft to rotate. It is called waterpump seal. Most likely that is gone so the waterpump is replaced with either a new one or a rebult one(depending on your finances). It lasted 15 years. Which is a good stretch, so you got to be expecting this kind of thing to happen.
- Q: I recently bought a 01 firebird trans am. was doing some maintenance on it. basic stuff, tune up, serpentine belt, break flush, and a coolant flush. I didn't notice any leakage in the car, and neither did any mechanics before. Last week when i did all these basic maintenance i went back to check up on one more thing. The mechanic raised my car up and asked when I'm replacing my water pump.Seeing that it was leaking...but the liquid wasn't green, more or less brown and it didn't have any particular smell, but its not coming from the oil pan. What I'm thinking is that maybe the hoses were completely tightened? All help would be appreciated! thank you!
- G.M. uses Dexcool and it's a orange reddish color. If not flushed at manufacturer recommended intervals it can wreak havoc on the cooling system as well as having the ability to eat water pump gaskets and restrict cooling system passages. There's alot of class action law suits regarding the dreaded Dexcool. Usually however when the waterpump goes you'll hear a roaring type sound when the engine is running as well as there would be some play in the waterpump shaft contributing to the sound it might make. If it doesn't leak from the gasket then it will be froim the weep hole on the bottom of the pump that let's go over time. Have the cooling system pressure tested so you can pin point where it's leaking instead of guessing and wasting money throwing parts at it, Good luck and hope this helps.
- Q: My old pump burned up so i recently replaced it (with a refurbished pump) I have new pipe to the pump, new tank. my pump is a 1/2 hp 230v pump, I also replaced the control box. With my pump plugged in and the water coming straight out of the pipe bypassing the tank when I turn the power on I will get water for a minute or so then I won't get water for a minute. This will keep happening. I have checked the switch and when I quit getting water there is still power going to the pump. any suggestions or ideas? bad wiring or bad pump?...I know that there is water in thew well, the pump is located at 100 ft of a 115 ft well and i can see the water level about 10 ft underground.
- Your problem may be in the wire feeding down to the pump, the pump starts to run, the torque of the motor turning causes the wire to twist and causes the break in the wire to spread and open the circuit. This stops the pump, pump settles back in to position and restarts, seen this happen a lot. Pull the pump and inspect the wire from top to bottom very carefully.
- Q: leaking coolant after the car engine has stoppped
- if your water pump is leaking fluid -its bad period- it should never leak unless installed incorrectly--signs for bad pump are-noise-grab fan blade wiggle if shaft moves-bad pump-open cap on radiator-no water moving-bad pump-bad pump--
- Q: I have 1 92 cadillac sedan deville and I am takin a 12 hour road trip tomorrow and I want to know if my water pump is goin bad or is it the fuel pump? Please help driving by myself and don't wanna get stranded anywhere. thank you in advance
- There are 2 key indications that you have a bad water pump. #1 and most obvious is your engine should overheat. This wont take long since the water pump is what circulates the coolant to keep your engine cool so within a couple of minutes of starting the car you should see your temp needle go way up. #2 is a little tricky because if your leaking coolant/antifreeze it can be because of a bad waterpump or a cracked hose or even a cracked or damaged radiator. Your best bet if your overheating is to have a pressure test done that will inspect for any leaks in your cooling system. If that turns out ok then the waterpump is the culprit. Be ware though in many models a water pump although a simple part and fix can be extremely expensive due to where it is place and how difficult it is to get to. Most manufacturers placed the waterpump in an area that requires you to take many components apart in order to reach it and often it is wise to replace your timing belt while your at it to avoid future expenses because that is also where your timing belt is so I would strongly advise anyone who is replacing their water pump to replace their timing belt as well.
- Q: Hey for the past month my car has been leaking coolant, making a wierd noise when i drive it, and saying low coolant when its filled to the top.my husband took it out to get gas this morning and it stopped on him and had to be towed to the mechanicthe mechanic said its the water pump and somethin about anti freeze and this cost almost 300 bucks with parts and laborim just wanting to know if a water pump does indeed cause issues like this before we dish out this kinda money!!! btw its a 96 chevy luminathanks
- It's not will a bad water pump cause your car to overheat, it's a bad water pump WILL cause your car to overheat. It circulates the heated water from your engine block to the radiator to be cooled and back to the engine. Stop moving the heat away from the engine, overheated engine. A bad water pump can have several symptoms. There can be a noisy, ratteling sound coming from the pump when the car is running, there can be water actually leaking out of the pump, or in a worst case, the pump will freeze up and throw the fan belt. The water pump has a metal impeller spinning inside of the housing. Over time, the bearings or sleeve can wear out something gets inside of the pump and damages the impeller blades. There is no proper way to repair a water pump, it must be replaced. Like all moving parts in a vehicle, they will wear out over time. If you can't tell if it is leaking or damaged, I recommend taking it to a mechanic and letting them take a look. They can tell you if it needs to be replaced and (hold onto your wallet) how much it will cost.
- Q: Hi, I need to create a portable shower and was going to go the DIY route, i wanted to use water pumps normally used in ponds, aquariums etc etc as the means of creating water pressure for the shower, the shower need not be really strong in pressure but it should be strong enough such that a person can take a bath using it.height of the shower would for sure be less then 6 feet, question , water pumps are rated at gallons per minute or some equivalent rating, how strong a pump or how much GPM should i be looking at ?
- if your sink does not need a pump, you shower won't either....most water systems are pressurized
- Q: I was recently driving and noticed my heat gauge in the red. I have a 1992 Honda Accord 4 door LX. When I opened the hood what appears to be water was all over the place. Is this the water pump or something else? I want to fix it this weekend so I was hoping for a better understanding of what it might be. I am aware of the labor involved with the water pump and removing the timing belts to get to it. Thanks a bunch in advance!
- No it doesn't sound like the water pump, There wouldnt be water everywhere if it was the water pump. It sounds like it could be the thermostat not opening up and causing everything to back up.
- Q: What is the influence of the speed of the pump motor on the pump?
- The question is very general,In general, high speed motors are used in 2 stages, 2900 revolutions per secondLow speed motor with 4 stage, 1450 revolutions per secondYou can probably generalize to thisWith the flow, head, run the pump speed type low noise will be reduced but the service life of the motor (relatively high speed), but the speed of price ratio low speed expensive (motor level 4 level 2 line than for more than copper)For example, it seems that the reason why turtles live longer is that their heart rate is slow.
- Q: Hey I need to pump water from a river and use be able to use it through a hose and also make the hose have pressure. I was thinking pump the water into a barrel and into a hose or something from there? Anyone know anything about if this would work? What would I need? thanks
- tried to send pix of water pump. no paste function on answers. anyhow a pulley at the top and bottom w/ a paddle wheel ran by river current. gear it down small pulley on paddle to big rope pulley under water to soak rope. an adjustable wringer pulley at top squishes water from soft rope into a drum or tank. i will try to email picture.
