- Q: Hi, I own a 2004 chev. venture and the water pump is getting noisy (most likely the bearings) I priced a refurbished one online at $18 and am wandering if this is a task I could handle myself, or if I'd most likely screw it up
- Unless you have a lot of experience doing mechanical repairs this is not a job for amateurs in most cases. I am not familiar with the engine in question but unless it is a bolt on external unit I would pay someone to install it.
- Q: We bought a second hand Rover 75, three months later head gasket blew. This was replaced but blew again due to original wet liners. A reconditioned engine was then put in but head gasket blew again due to original water pump. I am not trying to ascertain blame i would just like to know which is accurate as car seller is saying fault of mechanic as should have changed wet liners and water pump and mechanic is saying it is not common practice to change this parts when you replace a head gasket or engine. Thanks for any clarification, especially if you are a mechanic yourself.
- It seems excessive to have to remove the engine to replace a head gasket. But I typically work on American cars, and I've seen the inside of an Altima, it is quite cramped. If I were you, I'd search google for replace head gasket procedure nissan altima and see what it comes back with.
- Q: Where is the water pump? How do i take it out, and replace it?
- Drain Cooling System. Remove right front lower fender shield. Loosen pump pulley bolts Remove Accessory Drive Belt. Remove pump pulley bolts and remove pulley. Remove pump mounting screws Remove pump. Remove and discard O-ring seal. Clean O-ring groove and O-ring surfaces on pump and chain case cover. Take care not to scratch or gouge sealing surface. Reassemble in the opposite order. This will be a good time to replace your thermostat and check all hoses for wear and leaks.
- Q: Our mechanic wants to replace my husband's water pump in his 1996 Saturn saying it is quite loose. We'd like to wait until next week since its a 2 day job and with our schedules it would be difficult. Can it wait for a couple of weeks? Could this leave him stranded?
- There is no way of knowing how long it will last. How long has it been going out? What does the mechanic mean by loose? Is it leaking water? It could last a couple of years, it could go out tomorrow. If you trust your mechanic, which I would over people on here, I would have the water pump changed as soon as possible. When it goes out, and it will, it will leave you stranded, and in the most inappropriate place and time.
- Q: I have a 1997 15hp Mercury 2-stroke outboard. When I run it it runs great and does what i want it to do. However, sometimes it doesn't pee. I can still hold my hand in the stream when it does but its very very hot. It always pees when i run the motor WOT but when im just chugging along it goes out for a bit and then comes back on. Is this supposed to happen? I was told by my dad that the thermostat regulates the pump so that it doesn't cool the engine down too much. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated
- Some Mercs only pee when the thermostat is open, especially the smaller ones.Trace the pee hose back to the engine. If it runs to the thermostat housing,it's one of those engines.
- Q: What's a small soft pipe for a submersible pump in a fish bowl? How do you use it?
- Filter pump for oxygen spray. If the filter pump water flow, you can throw oxygen flowers, you can not use. With that pipe, it's loud and kind of
- Q: 1997 Chevy Cavalier, 2.2 engine. In the past 2 days I noticed that my temp gauge was reading a little higher than usual but not in the danger range. I checked and nedded to add coolant. Last night it started making a chattering or maybe klunking sound. As far as I could tell it was coming from the water pump but it stopped before I could get out of the car and look to see. Now the coolant is low again. Are these signs of the water pump being bad or could it be something else?
- Sounds to me like you answered your own question. I would have the water pump looked at by a reputable mechanic. A thermostat doesn't make a chattering noise when failing. A water pump can make noise when failing. WARNING: MAKE THESE CHECKS WITHOUT THE MOTOR RUNNING! When a water pump is failing, frequently it will leak coolant from the impeller shaft (the shaft that has the drive pulley). Look for greenish or orange liquid leaking from behind this pulley. Also, try to rock the pulley from side to side. If the pulley moves, the bearing and seal are failing and the water pump must be replaced. Have it repaired soon. Replacing a water pump is much cheaper than replacing a burned up engine. Until then, don't take it very far and watch your coolant level closely.
- Q: What is the influence of the speed of the pump motor on the pump?
- Low speed, the pump has a certain wear and tear
- Q: I have a '97 Grand Prix with a 3800 V-6. There is a single bolt on the left side of the water pump that is directly behind the power steering pump pulley. How do you get the PS pump pulley off? I pulled a tricep trying to get this thing loose, and I'm no further now than when I started on it. Can anybody give me a tip on removing the pulley or the whole PS pump? I have a brand new water pump that I can't get on because of this fine piece of design by the brilliant engineers at GM!
- you dont have to pull the power steeing pulley off...There three holes in the power steering pulley that allow access to two or possible three bolt that hold the pump to the bracket... Remove the belt, then get a deep either 13 mm or 10 mm socket and place it in one of the holes in the pulley...you will find that when you remove the bolts, the pump will slide out of the way.... Do not remove any powersteeing lines or any other item from the power steering pump..You will only be causing yourself more work..... The brillant engineers at GM left you an out...All you have to do is look...ha ha
- Q: I need a new timing belt and I'm getting that done soon, but my mechanic says that water pumps are usually replaced along with the timing belt at the same time. Does it really need replaced?
- What kind of car? That info would help. Well, usually on most import cars and some domestic, the timing belt runs the water pump. If this is the case, then yes i would be replacing the water pump with the timing belt because if you don't then when the pump leaks you'll end up paying almost the same money again for water pump job.
