- I have been in the cleaning business for 20 years and have had some experience with vacuum cleaners. I think you could have an excellent vacuum for around $300-$400. (Panasonic, Sanyo, Sharp) After seeing the Rainbow demonstrated, I just don't think they are worth the money. I also don't get how they clean the air. Basically, they are passing the dirty air over some water (not through it). and call this cleaning the air and filtering out the dirt. Check out some of the above vacuums online and save yourself some Christmas money. I just recently bought a Sanitaire SC6600 for our house and we really like it. Paid Approx. $325.00. It is commercial, 2 motor system, tools and stretch hose on board, carpet or hard floors (your can turn the beater brush off and just have air flow). Hope this helps.

- While your are trying to decide on one you might read Consumer Reports Magazine They had an article on choosing a vacuum cleaner within the last year. You can find old issues in most libraries or you can go on line and subscribe to it (for a price).

- I've never owned a house with a suitable location for a central vac. I have worked in houses that had them, and if you were anywhere in the vicinity of the central unit while it was in use, it was as loud as a jet taking off. You wouldn't want to be there without ear protection. I'd want to put it in its own soundproof room. I have used central vacs quite a bit, since I was a housecleaner for 6 years, and they didn't particularly impress me.

- I suggest that you look at a copy of Consumer Reports magazine. In their March issue they rated vacuum cleaners. They recommend Bagged uprights as being easier to handle and easier to empty. One of their first choices was Hoover Widepath Tempo for $80. (It is sold at KMart) I bought this model and I like it as it does a good job cleaning and is just as effecient as many of the higher priced models. The Shark Navigator was #18 among bagless . The only Dyson bagless model to score reasonably well was the DC28 Animal at $600(rated#4) the next Dyson was DC14 rated #17 at $400. Consumer Reports magazine is at libraries or you can subscribe online.
