They generally are built using cheaper or lightweight components that will wear out quickly. Having owned many vacuums over the years, I can tell you that I still prefer a model that uses a bag. Here's why; the bag makes things neater. When it's full, I throw it out. Those models that use a small cup or whatever make a heck of a mess everytime you want to empy it; a big cloud of dust etc. always surrounds the garbage bin. I also find that many of those models require frequent cleaning of the filters, or replacement. The Dyson might be the exception to all this but quite frankly the price is a big barrier for me. My last and current vacuum is an Oreck upright that seems to be very well made and works better than any other model I've ever owned.

If you have trouble with your arms or wrists they are available in self-propelled models, if not get one without. They all have great suction and a good agitator system.

Q: don't say the noise, because i remember one occasion i was in my friends house and the dog started chasing me.so i ran round the table and reached for the vacuum (which wasn't on) and it immediately started to back off. now before you say something like it knows the noise....this Dog was a huge puppy.so i doubt MEMORY would have been great.: haha omgg ..... my rotti is 4 months old and she is scared of those hugeeeeee trucks...She would jump in the back seat of the car and when ever she see my dad cutting grass in the backyard with the machine then she would hide under the deck or she would stay with me like a glue..... But, my goal was to keep them out from underfoot for this, so allowing them to think the vacuum's powers are to be awed, and keep your distance from, was a good thing. I just turned the lunging behavior into one of getting away from me.
