Q: are all motors the same size in kenmore canister vacuums?: I would think not. Look at the specs for vacuums you might be interested in and compare the amps or watts or whatever electrical spec is in vogue this year for vacuum cleaners.

Q: I have gone through three vacuum cleaners in the last 6 months because I vacuum all the time(3 children and one dog).I really want a vacuum that sucks up the dirt well as well as pet hair and can clean the stairs well.: I bought a Eureka Boss SmartVac for $148 from Sears' last year. It uses bags (which I now think is cleaner than the bagless kind...then you don't have to breathe in dust mites when you empty the bin.) I have 2 Ragdoll cats....they shed like crazy. I have tried many....many vacuums over the years, and this is truly the vacuum I swear by. And the attachments on this one are awesome too. It has a power paw attachment for the stairs. I had been using a hand-held vac to do steps (and though convenient, those hand-held models just don't have the power of an upright!) My mother-in-law (who doesn't care for cats) remarks on how nice our carpets look every time she comes over. I think that really seals the deal for me. And the attachments on this one are awesome too.

Q: how is bagless an improvement over the old fashioned vacuum cleaners with bags? I hate having to deal with the filth that comes out of the bagless machines. What was wrong with the bags? Am I missing something here?: I've had both types and will never go back to bags! I have an older Bissell I use upstairs that takes bags and I'm saving money to get rid of the silly thing. My reasons: 1. Bag less have much more suction. Most of us empty them after every use because you can see the dirt/pet hair and such or at least right before we use them so you're always getting maximum performance and suction. 2. Cost and availability of the bags. 3. One would go broke if you changed bags every time you used the sweeper! And after about the first 5 minutes of a fresh bag, the filter paper is partially clogged and there goes your suction down the tubes. 4. Because we empty them more, stinky sweepers are much less likely. How I empty mine to minimize the dust issue is to place is all but in the bottom of a 13 gallon trash can I keep on the enclosed back porch just for that purpose. It was an extra I had hanging around. I keep a trash bag in it also. I pop the latch and the high sides on the trash can keep a large part of the debris right in there. And filtering technology has changed a lot and gotten a lot better over the old bag vacuums. Several manufacturers are doing the cyclonic thing now. Dyson, of course, but Bissell has their version for 1/2 the price. This action spins more of the dirt out of the air stream moving through the machine, deposits it in the collection cup and your suction stays much more powerful. Nope, ain't going back to that hassle or additional cost all the time.
