- Blowing air into it is one way, but I took my vacuum and a brush attachment and sucked the dust OUT of it. Seemed more logical. I did the same with the innards that you can access with just a screw driver, because the were pretty dusty, too. When you blow dust around, it just ends up somewhere else, sucking it out is more foolproof IMO.

- Look at the Riccar and Simplicity brands. Both are manufactured by the same company here in the U.S. I have had my Riccar canister vac for 2 years now, and haven't had a single problem with it. They also come with lifetime guarantees. Don't listen to the hype about Dysons, my vacuum guy has them on his showroom floor and says they are overpriced pieces of plastic garbage. I paid about $800 for my riccar, but I know they also sell smaller compact vacuums for apartments. My vacuum does such a good job of cleaning that I've actually noticed that i dust LESS, and the air smells cleaner when i've finished vacuuming.

Most of the cheap vacuums require the hose to be holstered because suction is through the hose, not other ducting. Dyson is an example of a vacuum that can be used with or without the hose in place.

- The new dyson dc24 with the ball is super duper light weight and easy to push and turn. I don't know anything about a shark. The dyson is nice because the hose is so easy to pop out, and it has a handle so one could easily clean crevices and corners. The switches are on the main part of the vacuum, right below the handle and above the canister. It would work very well in a small room because it is a small vacuum.
