Of the two, voltage drop is by far the easiest. You need to determine what the allowable voltage drop in you cable is. The voltage drop is just I x R where I is the current and R is teh round trip cable resistance. The specification of 100 kW isn't enough. If its a high tension 100 kV line, the current is only 1 amp and a run of 16 AWG wire would deliver about 99,999 volts out of the original 100,000 volts to your load. If its a 100 volt system then a 4 AWG wire would only deliver only 20 volts to the load. The formula for wire resistance (in AWG) is that 10 AWG has 0.001 ohm/ft. Each increase of 1 in the gauge increases resistance by the cube root of 2 (about 25%). You calculate by picking what voltage drop you can live with, for the known current figure the resistance, knowing the length figure the resistance per foot, and then pick the AWG using the above. The second concern is wire heating. Although you could do the heat transfer calculations, instead look up the allowable ampacity for any wire in an electrical engineers or NEC handbook.

The diameter of each core is gotten from the formula C = ╥d. From this $ substituting values for ╥ and C; We find that d = 150 / 3.142. = d = 47.74mm :. for 4 cores, diameter of cable = 47.74 * 4 = 190.96mm However, note that this is only mathematical. On the field, the dimension of a cable is usually specified based on the number of cores it has, and the cross sectional area of one of the cores as the cores are all of the same size.

And back in the day when Firewire was more common any good firewire card had a power socket on it, again, either a Molex plug or a floppy power plug. AD

Q: I'm lost i cant find a hole in my ford c-max firewall to install my power cable for amp can someone help me as i am traveling this sat to France by car .: In most vehicles there are spare holes filled with rubber plugs. Pop one out with a screwdriver and make a hole in plug a little smaller than the size of the wire for a very tight fit. If it's a smaller size power wire, it can sometimes be run through the same grommet as the vehicles main harness. Be very careful not hurt the existing wire. I have seen people get careless and screw the harness up and it's not easy or cheap to fix. When doing this I usually use a stiff wire (a small diameter yet long screwdriver can work too) and slide it through the grommet. I then use electrical tape to secure the power wire to stiff wire and pull it through. Make sure your penetration point is still leak proof after doing this. You may need to use some silicone and or electrical tape to seal it up.

Q: I bought a 1999 Volkswagon jetta and there is no sound coming from the speakers. There are speaker cables, power cables, and input cables in the trunk. The powers cables ( there is 2 of them) are both connected to the negative terminal of the battery. There is also 2 input cables. Do I need an amp in order for my speakers to work? If I do how do I connect it? I connected my ipod to each speaker individually and they all work.: what your probably missing is actual RCA cables from the head unit or you speakers were supposed to be connected to a amp and when the original owner took the amps he didn't connect the amp back to the stereo. so if you want theres more than one thing you can do. have a shop connect the speakers back to the head unit. get an 4! channel amp and have it hooked up also by a shop or you can try your self but i recommend a shop doing it if your not confident. but theres really no mechanical problem so you don't have to drop any money on replacing any speakers certainly if they sound good up to your quality when you heard them.
