- Q: I don't have one single water shutoff valve in my house that will shut anything off completely. It looks fairly easy to repack them, and I have the tools, and there are instructions all over the internet. The question I have for the experienced among you is what packing material do I use? I have heard graphite thread and teflon tape and even joint compound. Is one better than the other? Easier to use? Also, if there are any pitfalls I should know about before I undertake this, please advise. Thanks in advance!
- Well if you talking about the water shutoff valves under sinks then you need to first shut off the water comming into the house at the main shutoff valve near the street , Or at a line comming into the house that connects up to the valve you are trying to fix or you may take a slight bath while trying to fix the valve that wont shutoff. Then Go to the shutoff valve you want to repair in that line where you shut the water off at and unsrew the handle at the base of the handle shaft using two wrenchs to hold both the nut on the shaft while using the other to hold the shutoff valve .this will prevent twisting the valve right off the connecting lines. Most of the time you will find it has a rubber gromet attached by a screw to the handle shaft.this is what you need to replace with a new rubber gromet which you can get in an assortment box at wal mart or homedepot or lowes for a low price. If you are using teflon thread or jointcompound you are repairing a Pipe joint leak where water is leaking externally of the pipe, not a shutoff valve leak .
- Q: i have a valve seat pop out and it did some damage my question is can it be fixed i took it to a machine shop the guy look at me with a little confusion he said it cant be done anyone out there have another answer
- Replacing the valve seat can be done, but if there is enough damage, it still may be risky. Swapping the head for a rebuilt one is much safer. You turn in the old head as a core, and no one will even care that is may not be rebuildable. They are only $159, exchange.
- Q: My electric water heater relief valve keeps opening 30 min after turning it on.I turned it down to 90F and 30 min later overflow again.when power is off no leak with the water on uld the valve be opening because of over heating?I know it does'nt leak with cold running through it.
- Sometimes I find that the relief valve is not working correctly and needs to be replaced. They tend to get a buildup of minerals from the water that interferes with proper function.
- Q: I own a 2001 Chevy cavalier Z24 with a dual cam... Just got it tuned up and noticed oil in my spark plug sockets, which leaves me to assume either the valve cover gaskets or the cam carrier gasket is leaking oil... I would prefer to so this by myself considering I'm sure it's going to be costly.. Anyone have any ideas on how I go about replacing either?
- valve cover shouldn't be that much of a problem as long as you have some basic tools and some mechanical ability. Take it that its a 4 cylinder car, the size of the motor is very helpful when looking for tips. Just don't over torque your bolts when replacing. 89 in lbs is about normal on gm's valve covers
- Q: Friends,is there anyone know about LinX(Linear Exchage)Valve,how they work.thanks in advance
- A valve is a device that regulates the flow of substances (either gases, fluidized solids, slurries, or liquids) by opening, closing, or partially obstructing various passageways. Valves are technically pipe fittings, but usually are discussed separately. Valves are used in a variety of applications including industrial, military, commercial, residential, transportation. Plumbing valves are the most obvious in everyday life, but many more are used. Many valves are controlled manually with a handle attached to the valve stem. If the handle is turned a quarter of a full turn (90°) between operating positions, the valve is called a quarter-turn valve. Butterfly valves, ball valves, and plug valves are often quarter-turn valves. Valves can also be controlled by devices called actuators attached to the stem. They can be electromechanical actuators such as an electric motor or solenoid, pneumatic actuators which are controlled by air pressure, or hydraulic actuators which are controlled by the pressure of a liquid such as oil or water. Actuators can be used for the purposes of automatic control such as in washing machine cycles, remote control such as the use of a centralized control room, or because manual control is too difficult; for example, the valve is huge. Pneumatic actuators and hydraulic actuators need pressurized air or liquid lines to supply the actuator: an inlet line and an outlet line. Pilot valves are valves which are used to control other valves. Pilot valves in the actuator lines control the supply of air or liquid going to the actuators. The fill valve in a commode water tank is a liquid level-actuated valve. When a high water level is reached, a mechanism shuts the valve which fills the tank. In some valve designs, the pressure of the flow fluid itself or pressure difference of the flow fluid between the ports automatically controls flow through the valve. In an open valve, fluid flows in a direction from higher pressure to lower pressure.
- Q: I've never replaced a shut off valve before but am wondering if there are any tricks in freeing up a stuck valve that wont close. Can this be done so I don't have to call anybody?
- When valves are turned all the way in an open position they tend to get stuck. Try a heat gun but make sure you have a copper line feeding into the toilet tank, not a plastic one because it can melt. Just heat the valve for a few minutes at a time, because over heating it can damage the rubber washer inside the valve. If all fails then it has to be replaced by someone who is knowledgeable.
- Q: can you put a blow off valve on a chevy cobalt ss supercharged?
- Not unless it's turbocharged.
- Q: Ok i dont know much about cars so if anybody could help out with this id appreciate it. Do i need to take my car in to get the PCV valve replaced or can i buy it and have it done in my driveway?Thanks....
- Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) Valve Removal Detach the PCV hose from the PCV valve. CAUTION: Do not pull the PCV valve from the valve cover without first rotating the PCV valve. Failure to follow this instruction may result in damage to the PCV valve. Remove the PCV valve. Rotate the PCV valve counterclockwise. Pull the PCV valve from the valve cover. Installation To install, reverse the removal procedure.
- Q: Defects in which valves would produce the following?1) SEVERE DEPENDENT EDEMA?2) PAROXYSMAL NOCTURNAL DYSPEA3) CONGESTED LIVER?4) DISTENDED JUGULAR VEINS?5) PRODUCTIVE COUGH WITH FROTHY SPUTUMfor 1. i believe it's tricupsid valve, 2. mitra valve please correct me if I'm wrong. Thaanks!
- 1. Would require dysfunction on a valve in the right heart generally speaking, so the options would be the likes of tricuspid regurgitation or stenosis, or even pulmonary stenosis. 2. PND is a result of heart failure, particularly regarding the left side of the heart (although of course both sides could be failing). Many valve problems could cause this as an end result... a bit of an odd question, but I'd go with mitral stenosis or regurgitation primarily. 3. Congested liver is the systemic blood system overload (like the oedema), so it is the right heart. Triscuspid regurgitation can cause a congested liver and if you felt this liver, it would be pulsating too. 4. Distended jugular veins are a sign of heart failure. Primarily right heart failure as it is causing blood to be backed up instead of passing through the right heart to the lungs. Tricuspid stenosis or plain old right heart failure (with or without left heart failure at the same time). 5. This is typical of left heart failure as blood backs up into the pulmonary system as the left heart is failing to pump into the systemic circulation. Similar things to PND can cause this. These questions though, are honestly a little on the vague side and half those cases would result from heart failure even without any valvular abnormalities...
- Q: is there any way to buy refills for empty valve oil bottles, such as holton or al cass
- I wouldn't bother with that. I would go to Woodwind/Brasswind, and get their brand of valve oil. Very economically sound, and a very good product. Why go to all the trouble of getting bulk stuff and trying to put it into those little bottles. Get the company brand stuff. It works wonderfully and is half the price. Sometimes you pay for the names al cass, or holton, when all you are getting is just oil.
