- Q: im redecortaing my room and i want a rug....except rugs are expensive!!!!!!!!I FounD SOMe RUGS THAT ARE LIKE 30$ BUT THEY ARE WICKED SMALL!are thee any cheap ways to make rugs?
- How about a rag rug. If you have or can get a lot of old cloth, cut it in even strips and make a long, continuous braid, making sure the ends of each strip are tucked into the back side of the braid. You can then lay the braid in a tight coil and stitch it together into a round or oval rug. The different colors of cloth make an interesting pattern. This is a brief explanation, but I'm sure you can find full directions on making rag or braided rugs online.
- Q: I accidentally spilled a little tung oil on a carpet this morning (stubborn cap = messy opening). Knowing that oil finishes can spontaneously combust, what is the safest way for me to clean the spill? Not much was spilled - possibly two teaspoons worth. I absorbed as much as I could with paper towels, and the rest got absorbed by the carpet.

- Q: I went to a heritage craft festival last year, and there was a lady making rugs. It was at a Colonial period mansion, and she said the rugs were found in the storage of the family, and never finished. So she was using similar materials, and following the pattern to finish them. I guess it was rug hooking, but I don't remember her calling it that. She would take a very thick piece of wool and pull it through the backing to make a little loop, then, on the same piece of wool, just make a loop in the next hole, no knots, no cut pieces..she said the fabric was so tight and the wool so thick that it would hold it in, and eventually the bottom would become felt from walking on it (she showed me the older portions of the piece). Is that the same as regular modern rug hooking? it doesn't seem like it...does anyone know if this sounds right? does anyone rug hook like this? Thanks!
- It can be called punch rug or rug hooking also have heard it called by other names that are used just in certain regions of the country. With a rug hook you reach through a hole you make in the fabric, grab hold of the fabric underneath and pull loops of the fabric(or yarn )through to the top of the fabric to make a loop. It is usually done with burlap backing, or you can buy rug backing made especially for it. For punch rugs you have a tool that the material or yarn is threaded though. You push it through the rug backing and hold one hand underneath to hold onto the loop so it won't pull out when the punch is pulled back out and moved to make the next hole. Aunt Lydia Yarn Co used to sell a lot of the kits to make them and also the patterned rug backing along with how much yarn you would need to make them, but I think they totally dropped that line. If the loops are made too closely together the rug won't lay flat, it will buckle from too much material being forced into too small an area. I have made over 40 hook rugs and easily twice that many punch rugs over the past 35 years. Have made them with wool material cut into narrow strips, cotton material and cotton or polyester yarns too. They are fun and can last for a lot of years. It takes a lot of patience and doesn't take long before you can get the hang of how closely to place the loops. Have 3 upstairs now that I keep putting off starting because of a lot of other projects I need to finish first.
- Q: how do you get dark spots out of my rug
- I use the 409 carpet foam stuff and it works wonders! My puppy has a habit of running around in dirt and it gets all over my carpet ... I usually spray the spot let it sit for about 15 min and then rub it out and spray again and rub it out of course. It has worked on everything so far. Even dog throw up/poop/pee and my husbands grease covered shoes when he is done working in the garage! =)
- Q: Me couple of friends are looking to get carpet to do up a quot;cubby housequot;. Crap carpet seems to be 90 to 100 dollars per broadloom metre new. Obviously it does not have to very good quality. Is there any wayyy cheaper solution to this? (South of Perth, Western Australia)
- you can get carpet way cheaper then that in NSW - Tell them to shop around in WA Otherwise just buy off cuts or ask carpet retailers if they have any orders that were not purchased - they usually do have cancelled orders - try that

- Q: I purchased this large rug at IKEA, I think its made of wooven cotton, but Im not sure (it doesnt have the tag anymore). Its really dirty, but I'm not able to put it in the laundry machine, its to big.The rug is this light cream color, so stains are very visible. Its got this weird stains, but they are made of dirt ,not of another substance. I already tried cleaning with the vacuum, but it doesnt remove them, the rug still looks dirty. Any ideas on how to clean it?
- I used to have a rug like that. The first few years I had it I would hang it out over my clothesline and spray it with the hose using a gardening attachment, that instead of fertilizer I filled with a mixture of water and laundry soap. Once that was done I sprayed it with plain water to rinse out all the soap. After a few washes with hose it eventually came clean. I did this about 2 times a year. That rug lasted almost 10 years. I finally got rid of it when we got a new carpet. Of course you have to do this on a nice day so that you can leave the rug on the clothesline ot air-dry when you are finished.
- Q: I just replaced my old area rug. The old one was great , I could steam clean it , take it outside and rinse it off and let it air dry. No problems for 4 years, it just got worn out. I replaced it with the same rug from the same store, but the carpet came loose from the backing were I had spot cleaned it. When I vacuumed it pulled out 6 foot of string. I took it back and they replaced it. This new rug, seems a little better, but the backing seems cheap. Is there a way I can re-enforce the backing so the carpet does not come loose from it when I clean it? Would applying carpet seaming adhesive to the entire rug work?
- no that wont work. things are being made cheaper these days, you get what you pay for. Sorry!
- Q: I understand that my knee-skin was torn/burnt in one direction or another all at once...but why does it hurt so bad?
- friction burns
