- (A) It's possible, because the work done by the worker on the sofa is the kinetic and potential energy he gives the sofa. Since the sofa goes up a ramp, it definitely gains gravitational potential energy: The higher off the street it gets, the more “potential” it has to gain speed if it falls. (B) Energy conservation is not violated: Of the 1600 joules of work done by the worker on the sofa, 100 joules go into the sofa’skinetic energy while the other 1500 joules go into the sofa’s potential energy.

- I think it is derivitives of the same thing in different languages...since furniture comes from all over the world and different eras in history. There may be subtle differences in details such as arm style, back height, attached cushions, etc. based on the historical period and country that originally started that idea. Sorry I don't have those details for you. It is all common terminology for the same thing: an elongated chair that seats more than one person. And different places in the US are probably used to calling this thing a certain word but as usual we may not know what we are really talking about based on the historical facts.
- Q: We are 3mo away from moving into a 1-year temp rental, while we try to look for something more permanent. Last week, my 1-yo niece puked all over our current couch (egads!)--I used enzyme cleaners and have extracted most of the stain/smell. We had originally planned to wait to buy new furniture until we found our long-term house in a year or so; however, no one is really wanting to sit on this sofa. Question is: Should we 'deal with it' until we find a permanent house and then buy a sofa that works perfectly for that house------or------should we get rid of that sofa now and buy something 'just guessing' what may work for us. - It's baby puke man, get over it. Rent a carpet/upholstery cleaner and go over the sofa if you guys are that wigged out about it then buy a sofa when you get a new place that matches the decor. In all honesty, there is probably more bacteria... even e coli on things like your purse, cell phone, coffee table, remote controls, kitchen sink etc. than the couch.... especially if you wear shoes in the house or have pets. If it was me, I would just deal with it as you said because if you wash it then it's fine. Wait until you have your own kids and they're spitting up and peeing on your furniture.... this really isn't a big deal.
