- Q: I've just bought a second-hand sofa. It's really comfortable and for a good price (there's a tiny thing I can easily fix, that's why it was cheaper) and the smell isn't a bad smell at any account. I just have a very sensitive nose and all but the most subtle smells give me a headache. The previous owners must have been using some home-perfume or scented candles, I think I recognize the smell from some of my friend's flats. The most natural solution - neutralize it with a different smell - isn't a solution here because I'd be bothered by the second scent. That goes also for strong chemicals. How do I get rid of the scent without replacing it with another smell?
- I would sprinkle baking soda on you couch for a few hours and then vacuum it up in the morning or maybe next day. Baking soda should take smell out without depositing any new scents. But, you may have to sprinkle it a few times or leave it sit over night. Baking soda has always worked for me and scent problems.

- It's okay, not great, though. Very firm, so if you like that, good. I would not suggest it for someone who is overweight or has a bad back -- and certainly not for long-term. IKEA's Sultan mattresses are relatively inexpensive, and pretty good, if you're looking for a cheap bedding solution. I wouldn't look at the BEDDINGE as a long-term, every-night bed, though.

- YES YES YES YES YES YES I Think that says it all. The arm of the sofa is to help you push yourself up. Its not for you to push against Over time the bolts will loosen up and the arm will become weak then you tighten the bolts but as time goes by the wood takes the beating also and then you have a real problem with your couch. Even sitting on it does do harm it was not made for that reason. I have told my kids time and time again not to do this and every yr im fixing the couch. - Not all scratching posts are created equal. The best ones have poles that are wrapped in sisal rope, NOT CARPET. Carpeting is fine for any perches it may have, but the poles should be sisal rope. Cats love hooking their claws into it. More importantly, however, is that the scratching posts needs to be tall enough for you cat to get a good stretch from it. It should be at least 3 feet tall. Ideally, you'd get a cat tree. A 5 feet tall or taller scratching post with multiple poles and perches so you cat can climb up and play or nap or whatever. You basically need to make this scratching post more inviting than your sofa. To encourage it's use, you can try rubbing cat nip on it, but even better, get a teaser toy and play with your cat all around the scratching post. Cats love to play and by associating this positive experience around the scratching post, you are encouraging your cat to use it. Whenever you do see your cat using the post you must reward it. Give it a treat and tell him how wonderful and beautiful he is (flattery goes a long way with cats!) In a nutshell, if you have the right scratching post, your cat will use it. However, no amount of bribery will get a cat to use a post that's too short, too narrow or too unstable. Good luck.
