- Things you will need: Lug wrenches, various sizes Spring compressor Pencil and paper Spacer Shock studs Floor jack 1 Elevate the car on a jack or lift winch so that it is safely and securely above the ground. 2 Remove the wheels using a lug wrench, setting the lug nuts aside where they will not be lost. 3 Disconnect the sway bar link from the lower control arm on each side of the vehicle. 4 Unbolt the outer tie rod ends as well as the lower bolt through the shock/coil assembly. 5 Detach the upper nuts on the shock absorber array that connect it to the upper shock tower. There are usually four of them. 6 Disconnect the coil and strut assembly from each tire. 7 Write down the alignment of the top plate of the strut studs to the lower shock hole. You'll need to know this before compressing the spring or else you will need to install the lift kit all over again. 8 Use a spring compressor to compress the springs on each tire. 9 Remove the top nut, top plate and rubber isolator from each shock array. 10 Install the new main spacer and plate studs on each shock array. 11 Reassemble the top plate and rubber isolator, tightening the top nut over them. 12 Connect the new assembly for each shock back to the vehicle, taking care to align each one according to the notes you made when you wrote down the configuration of the strut studs' top plate. 13 Detach the skid plates from the car, taking care to keep track of the bolts. Use a floor jack to hold up the differential while you remove the bolts that support it. 14 Install the small spacers between the differential supports and the cross sections. 15 Tighten the nuts and bolts until they are secure. 16 Reinstall the skid plates. 17 Check to see that you haven't left any bolts or screws off of the vehicle. 18 Make an appointment with your local repair shop to have the new array aligned. You can buy lift kits from almost any car customization/audio shop or from the net.

- if you are in the US or Canada, try Craigslist for your area and nearby towns. I've gotten a lot of my kayak gear that way. Look for a basic roof rack like a Thule or a Yakima brand --check their company websites to find which models fit your vehicle. You can easily post an ad yourself in Craigslist under the boats section saying Wanted: kayak roof rack. Some people sell old racks when they buy a new car that doesn't fit the old rack. Also, many kayaking and outdoor sport clubs have online newsletters with classified ads selling used equipment. Truthfully, the good racks usually don't sell that cheaply even used -- you might want to also check gear closeout catalogs like Sierra trading Post to see if you can get a good price on a discontinued new model. - The answer to your question is not simple, you asked a broad question. Depending on what you plan on lifting, ATV's, cars, trucks, or tractor trailers this will determine what you need to lift it. If you are planning on lifting cars, then you will need two hydraulic pistons rated at, at least 1.5 - 2 tons. You would make a simpler scissor lift. But to make a traditional lift, you will need very large (tall) hydrualic pistons have approximately a 5-6' range to lift the car up enough. Also, you will need hydraulic pumps and fluid that can support the kind of load needed for these pistons. Then you will need to make a housing to encase this all in and you will need to make a lift arm mechanism. This will need to be very strong, high carbon steel since it will act as a cantilever beam. 4 arms need to be made that swivel out to support the car. I've listed a couple sites below that show them, the scissor lift would be easier to make but not as useful since the car's tires actually ride on them and usually to do any kind of maintenance, the tires need to be removed for doing the brakes, struts etc. You can buy a whole lift kit for only $1375.00. You might want to think about just buying one instead of making one.
