Q: I‘m looking to purchase a car from a private seller and he advertised that the transmission needs work or just replaced. I‘ve only searched online so far, but I‘ve been seeing a lot of transmission computers for sale? Is that the transmission? Or is it just a component to a transmission? I always assumed that it was something mechanical, but I‘m not sure of the difference.If I need to replace the transmission on a vehicle would I buy a transmission computer?Please help, I am totally confused.: The transmission is a control unit for the transmission. It does things like to tell the transmission when to shift gears and how firm the gear shifts should be. The transmission is the actual mechanical assembly with a series of gears and clutch packs that actually changes the gear ratios of the transmission output. Before even considering this purchase I would want it completely verified what is wrong with this car. The transmission ot the transmission computer. This would make a big difference in the cost of repairs and my offer for the car would reflect this difference. If you are still confused, walk away and look for a different car.

Q: I have a 1996 Nissan Altima. I just bought the car 2 days ago. its at about 139.000 miles. the trans fluid is a little darker than usual. my dad says there is a little trouble shifting gears but it is not real noticeable unless you focus on it. i heard it might damage my transmission and its the service itself is pretty pricey. should i do this or is there an alternative that is safer: Transmission flushes are never good and on older cars they are pure death for a transmission. It's better to have the fluid and filter changed.

Q: I think my manual transmission fluid is low. The gears grind at low RPMs when the car temp is cold. So I want to switch it out completely and replace it with reline mt-90. I don‘t know what the previous transmission fluid was, but is it necessary to do some kind of flush? Or should a simple drain and refill be enough.: it should be something not installed correctly. Re do it and see if it fixs your poblem.

Q: I have a 1992 Ford Ranger 4x4 and having problems with the transmission. I was driving down the highway and came to a red light, I stopped when it turned green my truck would not move. I always drive in overdrive. So I put it in drive, reverse 1st and 2nd gear and would not move. I finally got it off the road. Couple hours later went back to my truck and it moved fine.Then I stopped and put it in park then overdrive and again would not move. So I waited a bit and put it i drive and it worked. Everytime I put it in overdrive it wont move. I have to let it sit then put the truck in drive and it goes. Overdrive will not work.: Take it to a transmission shop and have them diagnose the problem, Transmissions are a black art to work on, you have to know what you are doing to diagnosis it properly. Not anyone can diagnosis a transmission problem. I work in a garage and every so often we get a car in for a transmission problem, all we do is get one of the guys from the transmission shop across the street to come over and take a look at it, then we talk to the customer and see what they want to do, if any work is done, we move it over to teh transmission shop. The technicians at my shop are not stupid people, they are very smart, but they do not have enough experiance in transmissions, there is too much to go worng. Take it to a transmission shop and have them diagnoses the problem.

Q: It‘s a 94‘ ford bronco that pours out transmission fluid, any ideas on whats wrong with it? I‘ve heard that its a rear main seal, and the transmission would have to be dropped to fix it? Is it even worth it to fix this truck? i mean it‘s a four wheel drive with brand new tires, I just don‘t know if i should even take it into a shop to get fixed. Q: I have an automatic transmission, but on the steering wheel there are manual transmission shifting knobs. I‘ve driven it in manual before, and it works just as any other manual transmission would when it comes to the gears. I‘m just wondering why an automatic transmission would also have the manual settings.: sounds to me like your car has a problem and they are trying to fix it out of a bottle so they don't have to pay a repair bill.

Q: I have a 2009 Toyota Corolla XRS with 79,000 miles and at 76k I blew the clutch so I took it to toyota and had it replaced, now that it‘s replaced its hard to put in 3rd gear, before I blew the clutch it never did that, and now toyota is telling me I need a new transmission, but some people have told me the clutch may have to be adjusted. Before I got the clutch replaced all gears would go in good now after it got replaced sometimes its hard to put in 3rd gear and sometimes its easy to put it in, and when its hard to put in it grinds and when it goes in easy it doesn‘t grind, none of this happened before changing the clutch. They also said they didn‘t remove the transmission to change the clutch.: Shouldn't it be under warranty? If not don't go to Toyota. Find a reputable independent mechanic in your area. They won't try to make your car brand new and can cost like a 1/3 of the price of what the dealer will charge. Sounds like the clutch might just need to be adjusted a little.

Q: I was wondering if the automatic transmission of a 97 chevy tahoe would fit and operate on 93 chevy c1500/silverado (automatic too): only if the tahoe is a two wheel drive otherwise the tailshafts are different,and cant just be switched,also keep in mind finall drives and gears in trans are from 4x4 -----2x4

Q: My car has been shifting hard lately and I thought it was leaking oil for a while but I have begun to think that it is transmission fluid. It overheated a couple months ago due to a water pump failure. Could this cause something to break in the transmission and make fluid leak?It‘s a ‘97 BMW 740i. Does anybody know if these cars are notorious for transmission problems? I hope I don‘t need to rebuild it.I‘ve heard it costs anywhere from 4 to 6 thousand dollars.Any information is helpful, thanks!: if you drive a BMW then maybe you should ask the salesman that you gave 60.000 or more!
