- Q: I was wondering about purchasing a sofa bed to clear up space in my room. I dont want to sacrifice my comfort either. So, I came across the Ikea Manstad Sofa bed. it looks sturdy and different from other sofa beds. Those older sofa beds have those metal bars sticking in your back throughout the night making sleep uncomfortable. The Ikea Manstad doesnt have those metal bars but, im not sure if its very comfortable to sleep on. Is it suitable for everyday sleeping or should I stick with my old fashioned firm mattress?
- It does look comfortable, but I can't figure out how it converts into a double bed. If you have to slide one side up against the other, I am not sure if this is something you'd want to do each day, then put it back into a sofa. I can't imagine any sofa bed would hold up and be comfortable for everyday use. I think they are more suited for occasional use. Another option you may want to consider is a day bed. A day bed takes a regular twin mattress, and if you wanted comfort, you could use a high-quality one that would be nice for sleeping. I have a day bed in my guest room. It's a trundle, with a second twin that pulls out and pops up. You can either make it a separate bed, or butt it up against the other to make a large bed. The mattresses that came with it are cheap. I've slept on them, and they're not too bad. Certainly more comfortable, I think, than a sleeper sofa. Just something to think about.

- depends on what is on it. Coffee? cherry juice? chocolate? Dirt? pen ink?

- you only get a SOFA stamp if you have command sponsorship. it is recorded into your passport that is issued ( you do not get a No Fee as you are not a US citizen) and is good for as long as the sponsor's orders only. your being a non citizen has no impact on being eligible for command sponsorship and getting the stamp. the passport is stamped upon arrival into the country. if you came WITHOUT CS you will have issues but sometimes they will make an exception and stamp it within 30 days of arrival. if you do not yet have CS it can take up to six months for all the paperwork to be processed and approved.

- I think the SOFA is sort of your visa. Meaning, if you have SOFA staus, you will not need a separate visa to be in Japan. As for work, SOFA has special rules and regulations regarding dependant and employment. You may need to consult with base personel regarding the detailed rules and regs. In general, much of the work that is not DOD or US Military specific, is supposed to be given to local residents.

- Start out with a 3/4 piece of plywood or particle board. Cut this to fit exactly under your cushions and on top of the frame structure of the sofa. Go to the fabric shop and buy some thick foam to replace the foam in your cushions. With a three cushion sofa this method should cost no more than $35 and a bit of your own labor.

- There are many things that go into affect in a leather sofa or sofa. 1. Construction- 5/4 thick solid oak or maple hardwood frame is the industry premium. All interior joints of the frame will be glued screwed and corner blocked. This is for extra reinforcement. The spring construction is very important and its gauge (meaning desity of metal) The bests spring construction is a coil spring like eight way hand tied or any other coil spring system. Note some coil springs have low wire gauge get what you pay for. No sag or sinous spring is also used and will do good as along as the gauge is good and frame is sturdy. Feel the frame and around for sturdness. 2. Leather quality. Alot of companies might use a cheaper leather or not a true leather. Top grain is the only way to go. Top grain needs to be at least on the seat, back and arms of the sofa. A company can use split leather on the side and back cause it will not be used, but it will wear evenly. 3. Why did your friends leather fade. Well did they take care of it? Was it a naturally characteristic of the leather? Remember you buy leather shoes and purses they too can fade. 4 Who is the manufacture and 1200 seems really affordable for a leather sofa. Remember a pair of leather boots can cost $300 dollars and a leather sofa has 10 times more stitching, padding and leather so 1200 is not very expensive. In life you get what you pay for in everything. 5 ask around the more expensive leathers sometimes might not work for you cause they are usually higher maintence. 6 Email the sofa I might be able tell a little more about the company. A mid-priced one could run between $2500-$4000 The cheapest molded resin sofa China would probably start in the $800 range. I'm a proponent of real wood, domestic construction, and 8-way hand-tied frames. They will cost more, but you will never replace them.
