I recently found an old antique sofa on eBay which I am thinking of bidding on and hopefully win. It's a large Victorian Three-Seater Chesterfield Settee with good frame, mahogany legs and original horse hair.
- If you use leather, you will spending hundreds of dollars to reupholster that sofa, and it's unlikely you'll ever get your money out of it. That's only the leather cost too--you'll need strapping, padding and tools to do it yourself, or the cost of the extras for the pro. You can figure at least $500-1000 to have it reupholstered--and you probably won't be able to sell it for anywhere near that. Also, reupholstered antiques don't have a big market--you won't be able to sell it to a shop, and if you try to sell it again on OKorder, or some other site like that, you run the risk of not getting anywhere near the money you would need to recover your costs of re-doing it. It would make a very nice piece for your home if you did it yourself--but not in leather. Finding leather that big, sewing it together in small pieces to cover large areas--that's a job for a professional, not an amateur. - Q: I have a microfiber sofa and love seat i got from value city furniture and it didn't come with care instructions and my son kind spilled soda on it the cushions unzip i was wondering if it would be safe to toss it the washing machine on gentle with cold water the air dry to get them clean or use my handheld steam cleaner
- its almsot always a bad idea to was the cushion covers in the washing machine. The covers get distorted, they no longer fit like they are suposed to the seams will not line up it looks weird. You can always tell when someone does this. The handheld steamer will work better, however with micro-fibre you cannot spot clean, its very noticable if you do. You will have to clean the whole sofa. The good news is micro-fibre is almost always heavily stainguarded which means stains clean out of it very easily

- You can't take off fixed cushions because, by definition, they are fixed in place. What you might try is getting a used sofa without fixed cushions. That way you can remove the cushions and re-upholster them before you resell it and go back to your sofa without fixed cushions.

- I agree with what another person said. Typically, convertible futons (the one you pick which has the cushioning upholstered in it) or sofas like that are firm and uncomfortable. Particularly when sleeping on them as beds. You're going to want to make certain that it will meet your standards of comfort before getting it. If you get one you should test it out in person unless you're ok with the idea it may not be that comfortable. I personally would choose a regular futon or a daybed over the convertible futon sofas because you can pick your mattress and futon cover. You can also pick the thickness of your mattress, so that if you plan to sleep on it regularly you will be much more comfortable and when it wears out you can replace it easily. It has been suggested that a 9 inch thick mattress should be used for basic futons if you plan to sleep on them regularly.

- Leo, why in the world would you want to paint a leather sofa. Of course if you paint it, you will ruin it. I would suggest a slipcover for your sofa. There are variety of colors to choose from and its easy to put on. Good luck!
