Q: I wired up my brothers stereo in his 1994 volvo 850. At the time, I knew nothing about wiring harnesses so I did everything one wire at a time. I got it working but the stereo can still run with the car off. If you turn the radio off, a small led stays lit on the front. My brother couldn't get his car to start this morning. Could this little light be drawing enough power to run the battery dead over night? Should he just get a wiring harness and hook wires up like that?: If the stereo runs even with the ignition turned off, then you have wired a continuous power supply to the radio instead of an accessory, and that will drain his battery. I always recommend using a wiring harness when installing an aftermarket stereo, as there is no way you can accidentally wire something wrong.

Q: the fused ignition wire and illumination wire, i cant figure out where they go on a Dual stereo system model1225 Help. ( on a 1990 ranger ): the ignition wire is going to be a yellow with a black stripe(car wire) and the instruction manual will tell you for the head unit illumination wire i just taped up since my head unit didnt require it =) like they say...if it turns on it dont need it

Q: I want to know what the definition is of a hot wire gauge.: A hot wire gage is a tool that tells you which wire(s) are hot meaning that they have electricity running through them. If you go to the tool store you would ask for a voltage detector. These are about the size of a pen. They light up and beep when the detect voltage. I highly recommend having one when doing electrical. There is nothing worse than grabbing a wire that you thought was powered off only to get lit up. Hope this helps.

Q: i have two 12 gauge wires running from my battery to my sub amplifier, does this effectivly mean i have 6 gauges. each wire has a 15 amp fuse so does that also mean i have a 30 amp fuse?: Funny you should say that. Since if you look closely at the grade of wire in each of the bundles of wire and compare them to a 6 gage wire bundle. 12 gage wire is a little thinner and not quite and strong and 6 gage wire is heavy and thick and really sturdy. this is so it carries the load of power better and it doesn't have many small wires that can overheat or become frayed because the bundle is stronger as a whole. Essentially by running the wires in sets of 2 different 12 gage wires you double the risk of a fire, short, or other electrical damage caused by the possibility of each or both wires becoming overloaded. 12 gage wire can only individually support a certain amount of power, and whether you double it or not you have basically violated the wires ability to have a safe current run through it as a constant. So, You better get down to the store and replace all that wire you doubled before you burn out your system, melt the wire, or torch your car.

Q: I live in a condo and Im trying to wire a new light. When I wire it, it stays on constantly despite hitting the switch.The wiring Im dealing with is as follows.At the switch on the wall, there is a red wire, brown wire connected to the switch. A green wire connected to the box in the walll behind the switch.In the ceiling there is a brown wire, green wire, and a white wire wrapped with an unstripped red wire.Coming from the fixture are black, white, green.Ive tried connected black-brown, white-white green-green but the light stays on no matter what. Also tried white-brown, black-white, green to bolt. Still the same thing happens.Not sure what to do.: Get a volt meter and check the voltage in each wire with the switch on and the switch off, will tell you which wire is getting power from the switch. This wire will then attach to your black. I would try black to red, white to brown and green to green.

Q: what is the best wire to use for a chainmail: Costume or 'Historically Correct'? You can buy soft iron or aluminum wire in any gauge you can 'knit'. ( 14 is about right for Al., 16 for iron.)
