- Most wire is run in the middle of the 2X4 stud, that places it about 1 ?” from the finished surface, so use screws or nails that are less than 1 ?” long. I’m not sure what you are trying to achieve. There are some really good adhesives out there, so you might want to consider gluing your wires to the wall and avoid any risk of hitting wires. There are detectors available to find wires in walls. Some stud sensor makes that claim, but my experience is that they are not reliable for wires. Wire tracers that locate wires in the wall are very expensive and difficult to find. A specialty shop that carries equipment for telephone technicians would have them, not most home centres.

- It is called enamelled copper wire or copper winding wire. You will find it at Digi-key and other electronics retailers. Check OKorder as well. It comes in different gauges (thicknesses), the higher the number, the thinner the wire. I'd say the stuff he uses in the video is about 30 gauge.
- Q: Both wires are black. One has what looks like white paint on it.
- In Knob and Tube wiring system the black is the hot wire. KT is no longer an approved wiring since the insulation will deteriorate over the years and no ground wire is present. It should be completely removed as soon as possible. The wire with the white paint is probably the neutral wire. To verify this, take a conductor from the neutral buss of the panel and run it to the outlet, then use a solenoid tester to read the voltage.

- NO, you need to buy thicker wire because electricity follows the path of least resistance which means if one of the wires is 1/8 of an inch longer than the other, that is the wire the most electricity will flow through, as far as the speaker wire it wont make a difference unless it is thicker than what you already have installed (its very hard to tell the difference in sound quality even with very high quality speakers

- There should be black and white wires in the ceiling. Black is hot, white is neutral. If there is no ground wire, that's OK. You just wouldn't connect the ground wire anywhere.

- just connect the ground (most important) and the black is hot the white is neutral. the ground is the bare wire. If you get it backwards the blades will spin in the wrong direction. just reverse the white and black. If you need to wire it to a 3-way switch, well I don't want to get into that.
- Q: Hi, I'm extending my pc 5.1 sound system stereo cables. I have a M/F extension wire which I will cut to solder a seamless wire to the system. Problem is that in the system cable I have a white, green(or red) and bare wire. and ont he extension I have a black red and white. Which wire do I connect to which?thanks
- I'n not sure I understand the problem. In my view if you have 3 wires -- ending in, let's say, three plugs -- and want an extension it doesn't matter what colour the wires are as long as you end up connecting the original wires to the same plugs. So if you have white, green and bare on the original cable, when you cut the cable you have white, green and bare on both halves. Use the white, black, red extension cable to connect the two halves. I'd suggest white white, green red, and bare to black at one end and the same at the other ... but it doesn't really matter. Hope that helps.
