Q: I am a 20 y/o male ectomorph body type 130 lbs 5'7. I have been working out for about 2 years but probably only started getting serious with compound exercises with high weight, low reps, for about 2 months.I have already seen alot of improvements by doing more compound exercises vs isolated ones. I do squats, deadlifts, clean and press, dips, chin ups, etc, but when it comes to the bench press.... I just feel flat out weak. I am doing 5x5 for my sets/reps. I can only put a 45 on the bar and barely get it up 5 full reps. It's been like this for awhile. I feel strong everywhere else but for some reason, my bench is weak and my chest shows it.Any recommendations?
You're bulking so make sure you get your calories from the right sources and lift hard. I would do more than just bench presses, do dumbbell flyes, incline/decline dumbbell press, and then work your way up to the bench. Make sure you are doing a split, meaning don't exercise more than 1 muscle once a week. My split is Mon- Legs Tues-Back and Shoulders Wed-OFF Thur-Chest Fri-Arms Sat-Light cardio I do sets of 12,10, and 8 with weights increasing by 5 pounds every set. should be able to bench is hard to say but I'll tell you man, starting regular resistance exercise right now is awesome at your age. It will stimulate hormone development and kickstart your body into making changes that could potentially last for many years. To be honest, I started at 13 and couldn't bench press 65 pounds. That was almost 20 years ago and I loved teh changes I made back then. Today, I'm a personal trainer and could probably bench press two of my 13 year old versions of myself without thinking twice. Squats and deadlifts work the same muscles, but barbell squats require more stabiliser muscles making it a better exercise. Deadlifts, depending on the type, can work your quads and hamstrings. If you do sstraight leg deadlifts, it works your hamstrings. Bent leg deadlifts work your quads and a bit of your hamstrings.

I was on the power lifting team in high school and was in the 101 weight class and benched 145. So I think that you are doing good. My advice to you would be to do more strength training with lighter weight that way you can lift the heavier weights with ease. try to do anywhere from 55-65% of your 1 rep max, 3-4 sets fo 12-15 reps. this should help you on your ballistic power as well as overall strength. Lifting lighter weights is not just for toning but is also for building strength. Lifting heavier, as you already know is more for building mass.also make sure not to drop below 90- degrees when performing any kind of press or fly moves. The reason being is that you have a small muscles called the superspinatus muscle that is the size of your pinky. when you drop below 90-degrees you put and undo amount of stress on that small muscle to try to lift 250, all you are doing is stressing it and once yo stress it enough you will eventually snap it and you will not be able to do bench press for a while. This is the leading cause of most shoulder injuries because people are not aware of what they are asking that muscle to do. you can strengthen this area by doing rotary cuff exercises with no more than 5 lb. weights.

i also have oily skin and from my expirience with pressed powder i dont like it as much as loose powder unless it is a very expensive and good product. ps. i would suggest using a powder puff rather than a brush
Q: I am required to collect and press a variety of plants for a plant identification course that starts in the fall. The instructions say to change the inter-leafing paper after 24 hours, but it doesn't say how long they ultimately need to stay in the press. Can you help? Thanks in advance!
It depends upon how many plants, humidity and if you are using gentle heat to speed the drying. In dry environments, thin tissues will dry in a few days. If you have high humidity and lots of fresh plant materials, it could take a lot longer. I would change the blotters every 24 hours if you have lots of plant material to press.
Q: Hello, I do not like to do bench pressing, because it fell on me once and i never want to do it again, is there any other exercise that will train that muscle that bench pressing trains?
Pushups! Even better than bench=press, because pushups also involve your core (abdominal muscles and back) in addition to the pectoral muscles and triceps. You can focus more on the pecs my speading your hands farther apart on the ground, and focus more on the triceps by bringing your hands closer in to the center under your shoulders. As you get stronger, start doing them with your feet propped up higher (like on the edge of a couch or chair) -- this puts more weight on the upper body; and you can even do them one-handed if you get REALLY strong. Also, think about using two separate dumbells to do the bench press motion -- if you drop them, they will fall to the side rather than you ending up with a big heavy bar pinning you down. This way you can increase the amount of weight yuo're lifting over time (as opposed to pushups, where your body weight is as heavy as it gets).
